The October 2025 14-inch MacBook Pro with Apple’s base M5 chip keeps the M4-era chassis and internal architecture. iFixit found one meaningful physical improvement: the central battery-cell pull tabs are reachable without removing the trackpad. Apple also published clearer battery-service instructions. Those changes help technicians, but they do not make the battery user-replaceable or turn the MacBook Pro into a modular laptop.
The short version
- The teardown subject is the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the base M5 chip, released in October 2025—not the later 14-inch or 16-inch M5 Pro and M5 Max models.
- The outer shell, bottom-cover design and logic-board-dominated layout are substantially familiar from the M4 generation.
- Battery access is slightly better because the central pull tabs can be reached without first removing the trackpad.
- Ports are modular, but the logic board still obstructs access to them and the fans.
- Glued speakers, adhesive-mounted cells and laborious display access remain.
- iFixit rated the machine 4/10 for repairability, which supports “incremental progress,” not a repairability breakthrough.
iFixit’s teardown also identifies the M5’s faster storage architecture and higher maximum storage options, but those are performance and configuration changes rather than a broad physical redesign.
What changed inside the M5 MacBook Pro?
Battery pull tabs are easier to reach
On the M5 layout, the pull tabs beneath the central battery cells can be accessed without removing the trackpad. That eliminates one awkward access step compared with the M4 and is the clearest repair-oriented hardware change.
The improvement has limits. The six cells are still bonded into the top case with adhesive. Tabs can tear, become harder to pull as adhesive ages, and are not a guarantee of safe removal. A battery that is swollen, dented, punctured or otherwise damaged should not be pulled out through the normal tab procedure.

Battery capacity is reported two ways

The 0.2 Wh discrepancy should be reported, not silently resolved. It is too small to support a claim of meaningfully longer runtime. Apple advertises up to 24 hours of video streaming and up to 16 hours of wireless web use for the base M5 configuration; those figures are not a consequence demonstrated by the teardown.
Apple’s repair documentation is more explicit
Apple published a detailed battery-removal procedure at or near launch. It starts with disconnecting the battery-management-unit flex cable and requires the battery to be discharged to 30% with Apple’s Battery Drain Tool. The procedure specifies an adjustable torque driver covering 10–34 Ncm, a Torx Plus 5IP, 50 mm bit, ESD-safe tweezers and replacement adhesive.
Apple warns that incorrect battery work can cause fire, injury, data loss or device damage. A removed battery must not be reused or reinstalled. Clearer instructions and a defined discharge sequence can reduce accidental shorts and make professional servicing more predictable, but documentation does not change the machine’s physical modularity.

Ports and fans remain buried
iFixit found the ports to be modular, which is preferable to having them permanently integrated into the logic board. In practice, however, the ports and fans sit beneath or are obstructed by the logic board. A modular part can therefore still require extensive disassembly and substantial labor before it can be reached.
Speakers and display access remain difficult
The speakers are still glued in place. Apple warns that adhesive removal near cells 2 and 4 can damage speaker foam; if that happens, both speakers may need replacement. Display removal involves antenna brackets, small screws, hinge hardware and extensive disassembly. The display is replaceable as an assembly, but it is not a quick-access component.

What did not change?
The bottom cover still uses P5 screws and clips, and the logic board continues to dominate the interior. Storage remains part of Apple-silicon system architecture rather than a conventional user-replaceable SSD. Many repairs still require removing several unrelated assemblies before the target part is accessible. The accurate description is “little changed, but the changes that did occur are concentrated in battery access and procedure”—not “nothing changed.”
For current model distinctions, Apple’s specifications page lists multiple M5-family machines. Do not apply the 2026 M5 Pro/M5 Max models’ different batteries, wireless standards or ports to this 2025 base-M5 teardown.

How difficult is a battery replacement?
Physically possible, but not simple
iFixit demonstrated that the battery can be removed without following every step of Apple’s top-case replacement route, and the improved pull-tab access is useful. That is evidence of physical feasibility, not evidence that an owner can safely perform the job with household tools.
Apple’s official route
- Remove the bottom case.
- Disconnect the battery-management-unit flex cable.
- Discharge the battery to 30%.
- Use the specified torque driver, 5IP bit and ESD-safe tweezers.
- Remove adhesive strips one at a time and install the supplied replacement adhesive.
- Install a new battery; do not reuse the removed pack.
Apple says the work is for technicians with knowledge and experience repairing electronic devices. If a battery is expanded, dented, punctured or otherwise physically damaged, stop rather than pulling its tabs; Apple directs technicians toward replacing the top case with battery and keyboard. Apple also provides a separate procedure for broken adhesive tabs. Do not improvise by prying under cells with metal tools.
Physical feasibility is not economic feasibility
On October 24, 2025, iFixit reported that Apple’s Self Service Repair Store listed an M4 top-case assembly containing the battery and keyboard at $527. That is an M4 price signal from that date, not a confirmed current M5 battery price. A repair decision must account for parts availability, whether Apple sells an individual component or a larger assembly, tools, consumables, labor, calibration and collateral-damage risk.

Overall, yes—but only marginally. Apple made one battery-removal step less cumbersome while leaving the broader repair architecture largely intact.

What this means for buyers and owners
If you already own an M4
The teardown gives no compelling physical reason to replace a working M4 solely for easier future servicing. Consider an M5 for its newer chip, faster storage architecture, greater storage ceiling or workloads that benefit from newer GPU and on-device AI capabilities—not for a major chassis redesign.
If you are choosing between a new M5 and discounted M4
Compare price, memory, storage, expected ownership period and workload first. The M5’s repairability improvement is a tie-breaker, not the main purchase argument. Apple’s current buying page is here; configurations and prices can change by region and date.
If you are considering DIY service
A battery is not a beginner repair. Risks include puncturing a cell, breaking adhesive strips, damaging speaker foam, shorting the board, losing small screws or spacers, and damaging Touch ID, display, trackpad or flex cables. For a swollen, punctured or damaged battery, use Apple, an Apple Authorized Service Provider or a qualified independent repair shop. Apple’s service entry point is support.apple.com/repair, and the provider locator is locate.apple.com.
If you are a technician
Do not judge the job by modularity alone. Check whether the part is sold separately, required software configuration or calibration, adhesive and consumables, labor time, collateral-damage risk and whether security-linked components or customer data are involved. A modular port can still be expensive when the logic board must come out first.

Verdict
The M5 MacBook Pro shows Apple moving in the right direction, but only by inches. The battery is slightly easier to reach, Apple’s documentation is more helpful and some components remain modular. The logic board still blocks access to important parts, the battery remains adhesive-mounted, speakers can create collateral-repair risk and Apple’s official route can involve replacing a large top-case assembly. For buyers, the M5 is a chip and configuration upgrade with a modest repairability bonus—not a redesigned, easy-to-service MacBook Pro.
