There is no M4 Ultra Mac. Apple’s March 2025 Mac Studio generation paired an M4 Max with an M3 Ultra, and Apple has never announced an M4 Ultra as a retail chip. The current rumor is an M5 Ultra Mac Studio during 2026, while reports say Apple discontinued the Mac Pro without a replacement. As of August 18, 2026, “waiting for an M4 Ultra Mac Pro” is not a sensible buying strategy.
What happened to the M4 Ultra?
Apple announced the 2025 Mac Studio on March 5, 2025, with availability beginning March 12. Its two chip families were the M4 Max and the new M3 Ultra—not an M4 Ultra. Apple’s current technical documentation still lists those same options: Apple Support specifications and the Mac Studio specifications page.
That means the M4 Ultra expectation did not materialize. It is more accurate to say Apple skipped or never released an M4 Ultra than to claim a confirmed cancellation. Apple does not produce an Ultra version for every chip generation, and no official announcement established that an M4 Ultra retail product existed.
The 2025 announcement explicitly described the computer as using “M4 Max and the new M3 Ultra”: Apple’s launch announcement.

Why pair M4 Max with M3 Ultra?
Apple has not given a specific reason. Several explanations are plausible, but they remain analysis rather than confirmed causes:
- Ultra designs combine high-end die packages and require substantially more packaging, thermal, power and validation work than a standard Max configuration. Their schedules do not have to match the annual Max cadence.
- The M3 Ultra’s core count, memory bandwidth and memory ceiling gave Apple a suitable flagship desktop part even while the newer M4 Max covered the mainstream professional tier.
- Apple may have been segmenting the product line: M4 Max for newer single-threaded and general professional work, M3 Ultra for heavily parallel or memory-intensive workloads.
There is no reliable evidence here that yield problems, packaging failures or product cannibalization caused the omission.
What the current Mac Studio actually offers
The 2025 Mac Studio remains the factual baseline for anyone shopping now. Maximum specifications differ by configuration:

Apple’s launch materials said M3 Ultra could be configured with up to 512GB of unified memory, while the current support page surfaced for this article lists options beginning at 96GB and configurable to 256GB. Check the live U.S. store configuration on the day you order; do not assume the announced 512GB option is currently available.

Both configurations support Thunderbolt 5. The current Studio measures 7.7 × 7.7 × 3.7 inches and offers Wi‑Fi 6E and 10Gb Ethernet, according to Apple’s specifications. The 2025 model started at $1,999 in the United States: Apple’s launch announcement.
M4 Max versus M3 Ultra in real work
Apple says M3 Ultra can deliver up to twice the performance of M4 Max in selected workloads that benefit from more CPU and GPU cores and much greater memory capacity. That is a workload-specific claim, not a universal benchmark. Results depend on software optimization, scaling, memory pressure and whether an application uses the GPU, media engines or Neural Engine.
M4 Max is the more logical choice when responsiveness, newer single-core performance and substantial—but not extreme—professional work matter. M3 Ultra is aimed at high-end 3D rendering, large local-AI models, scientific workloads and complex video pipelines that can use many cores or need a very large shared memory pool.
What happened to the Mac Pro?
Apple introduced the Apple-silicon Mac Pro in June 2023 with an M2 Ultra, in tower and rack versions. The tower started at $6,999 in the United States: Apple’s announcement. Its justification was its enclosure and internal PCIe expansion—not a uniquely faster chip than the Mac Studio.

The M3 Ultra Mac Studio subsequently offered a newer, higher-end Ultra configuration in a much smaller enclosure. In March 2026, 9to5Mac reported that Apple had discontinued the Mac Pro and had no replacement planned. Apple has not issued a public statement permanently abolishing the product, so the careful conclusion is that a new Mac Pro is currently a low-confidence prospect.
A Studio is not a universal Mac Pro substitute. Users needing internal PCIe capture cards, storage controllers, specialist audio hardware or other expansion may still require a tower-style workstation—if Apple offers one again.
What M5 Ultra rumors actually say
Reports place an M5 Ultra on Apple’s 2026 roadmap, most plausibly in a Mac Studio update. Macworld and related coverage have floated an October 2026 launch, but that is a forecast, not an Apple-confirmed date. Other reporting mentions possible memory shortages and rising DRAM prices that could delay release, limit high-memory configurations or increase prices: Macworld’s Mac Pro and Ultra roundup.

Reasonable expectations, not leaked specifications
If an M5 Ultra Studio arrives, buyers can reasonably hope for higher single-core CPU performance, a faster GPU with improved ray tracing, stronger AI acceleration, at least the current M3 Ultra-class memory ceiling and continued Thunderbolt 5. Better availability of high-memory configurations would matter as much as peak silicon performance.

There is no trustworthy basis for stating its core counts, memory bandwidth, process technology, exact price, release month or benchmark scores. A redesign is also unconfirmed; the prevailing expectation is an incremental update unless Apple needs a different cooling or memory architecture.
How to decide: buy now or wait
Buy a current Mac Studio now when:
- You need a desktop for paid work or a delivery deadline.
- You use Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Xcode or other macOS-specific tools.
- You need unusually large unified memory today.
- Your work scales across many cores, making M3 Ultra’s capacity more valuable than waiting for an unknown improvement.
- You do not need internal PCIe expansion.
Choose M4 Max for most professional workloads that need a modern, responsive desktop without extreme memory demands. Choose M3 Ultra when local AI, 3D, scientific or video workloads genuinely use its extra cores and memory.
Wait for the rumored M5 Ultra when:
- The purchase is discretionary and your current machine is adequate.
- You are about to spend heavily on a high-memory configuration and want the newest architecture.
- A meaningful CPU, GPU or AI improvement would materially reduce your render, simulation or compile times.
- You accept an uncertain launch date, possible delays and potentially higher memory pricing.
Do not wait specifically for M4 Ultra
That product has already failed to appear in the M4 generation. The relevant high-end rumor is M5 Ultra, primarily for Mac Studio—not an M4 Ultra Mac Pro.

Unified memory is not the same as discrete VRAM
A large shared memory pool can let a Mac Studio hold large datasets or AI models, but it does not automatically outperform a workstation with dedicated GPUs. Memory bandwidth, model quantization, GPU kernels, software support and multi-device scaling determine actual speed.

Apple says M3 Ultra can run models exceeding 600 billion parameters entirely in memory. That is a capacity statement, not a promise of interactive inference speed; unsupported operators or inefficient Metal software can still make a model slow.
Apple’s comparisons are selective
Published results use named applications and selected configurations. They should not be generalized into claims that M3 Ultra beats every M4 system or that an M5 Ultra will be twice as fast.
Expansion may outweigh chip speed
For PCIe cards, specialist capture hardware, internal storage controllers or institutional rack deployment, a Mac Studio may be the wrong platform even when its general compute performance is higher. Confirm availability before planning around a new Mac Pro because 2026 reports say none is scheduled.
Alternatives and total-system considerations
A MacBook Pro can provide comparable Apple-silicon performance with a display and battery, but a configured model may cost more than a Studio and offers different sustained-performance and connectivity trade-offs. A Mac mini suits developers and lighter creative work when you already own a monitor and peripherals, but it is not an Ultra-class replacement.
Windows workstations from Dell Precision, Lenovo ThinkStation and HP Z can provide discrete NVIDIA or AMD GPUs, CUDA, broader PCIe expansion and replaceable components. Compare model support, acceleration software, memory bandwidth and total cost—not system RAM versus unified memory alone. NVIDIA’s professional platform information is at NVIDIA.
Mac Studio storage is configured at purchase, so budget for Thunderbolt 5 storage, external NVMe, NAS or 10Gb networking if your projects require more working space. Buyers building a complete workstation can also review Studio Display and Pro Display XDR; the latter requires a separate stand or mount and is intended for reference HDR and color work, not ordinary office use. AppleCare+ and Apple Trade In are options whose value and pricing depend on the exact configuration, condition and purchase date.
Verdict
The M4 Ultra is a historical rumor, not a product you can sensibly wait for. The current high-end Apple desktop is the M3 Ultra Mac Studio, while M4 Max is the practical choice for many professionals. An M5 Ultra Mac Studio is plausible but unconfirmed, and reports of a future Mac Pro are contradicted by its reported 2026 discontinuation. Buy the Studio that solves today’s workload; wait only when your need is discretionary and you can accept uncertain timing.
