Amazon Macie is an AWS security service that helps you find sensitive data stored in Amazon S3 and spot S3 buckets with security or privacy problems. It does not scan every storage service in your account. It works on S3 general-purpose buckets, and that narrow focus is the first thing a beginner should understand.
Midhun Krishna B’s beginner-friendly DEV Community article, published September 16, 2026, uses a student-data example to introduce the service. The question it starts from is a common one: how do you know whether sensitive information stored in the cloud is being handled safely? Macie is one AWS answer to that question.

What Macie actually does
Macie covers two jobs. The first is an inventory and evaluation of your S3 general-purpose buckets, checking them for security and access-control issues. The second is discovery of sensitive information inside eligible objects, using machine learning and pattern matching. When Macie detects a potential bucket security or privacy issue, or sensitive data in an object, it creates a finding that you can review.
The article’s own summary of the division of labour is useful as a mental model. In the author’s words, “S3 stores the data, while Macie helps us understand whether sensitive data exists there and whether the S3 environment has security risks.” That is the author’s description rather than an AWS product quotation, but it matches how the service is documented.

How Macie finds sensitive data
Macie has two discovery methods, and they differ in breadth and control. Automated sensitive data discovery gives you broad visibility by sampling representative eligible objects across your inventory. It does not read every file. Discovery jobs are the targeted option: you specify which buckets and which object criteria to analyse, and you can run the job once or on a recurring schedule.

Neither method replaces the other in every environment. Automated discovery answers “where might sensitive data be?”, while a job answers “what is in this bucket, under these criteria?”

Identifiers: built-in and custom
Macie includes managed data identifiers for many categories of sensitive information, including personal, financial, and credential data. You do not need to write patterns to start.
When your data has its own format, you can add custom data identifiers. A custom identifier is defined by a pattern such as a regular expression, optionally with refining criteria that narrow the matches. Allow lists work in the other direction: they exclude known text or patterns from analysis, which is useful when a value that looks sensitive is in fact a harmless test string or a known placeholder.

Findings and integrations
A finding describes either detected sensitive data or a potential bucket security or privacy issue. You review findings in Macie itself, and you can route them elsewhere:
- Amazon EventBridge: Macie publishes findings to EventBridge so you can monitor them and trigger downstream processing.
- AWS Security Hub CSPM: Macie can publish findings here to be analysed alongside other security signals across an AWS environment’s security posture.
Trial, pricing, and the free allowance

Coverage limits
Macie analyses only objects in general-purpose S3 buckets that use supported storage classes and supported file or storage formats. Objects in unsupported formats, or objects that cannot be classified, are not eligible for analysis. If you depend on a particular file type, confirm it against AWS’s current list of supported formats before assuming Macie will examine it.

- Confirm the account is within the 30-day free trial, and note that discovery jobs are not part of it.
- Keep the test data in a general-purpose S3 bucket with a supported storage class and format.
- Estimate how much data you will analyse against the 1 GB monthly allowance.
- Decide whether you want a one-time job or a recurring one, since recurring jobs keep generating charges.
- Disable or delete the bucket and any jobs when the exercise ends.
