Lyft has agreed to a $272.5 million settlement over allegations that it misclassified California drivers as independent contractors. San Francisco Superior Court must approve the agreement before it becomes final.
What the Lyft settlement covers
The case concerns claims that Lyft treated drivers as independent contractors when they should have been classified as employees under California law. California officials and private plaintiffs alleged violations of state wage-and-hour rules and the Unfair Competition Law. The settlement resolves those allegations; it is not a court finding that Lyft violated the law.

The covered work period ends on December 15, 2020. The start date is not consistent across the official accounts: the California Labor Commissioner’s Office gives April 6, 2016, while Lyft’s SEC filing gives April 5, 2016. The approved settlement documents will determine which date controls.
The Labor Commissioner says the claims rely on California’s ABC and Borello worker-classification tests. The allegations included denial of minimum wages and overtime, rest-break premiums, reimbursement of business expenses, accurate wage statements, timely wage payments, paid sick leave, and other workplace protections.

Who may be eligible, and how to claim
The agreement concerns drivers who performed covered work for Lyft in California during the settlement period. That description is not enough to establish an individual’s eligibility: the final settlement terms and administrator’s records will determine who qualifies and how payments are calculated.
As of the California Labor Commissioner’s 2026 announcement, a third-party settlement administrator was expected to contact eligible drivers directly and later create a website, email address, and call center. The administrator had not been named, and no claim deadline or individual payment formula had been announced. Watch for official notices rather than relying on unofficial claim sites or promises of a specific payout.

How the settlement money is allocated
The Labor Commissioner’s Office says 87% of the settlement will go directly to drivers. It also says the office will forgo its share of penalties, allowing $5.45 million to go to more than 1,600 drivers who filed wage claims through its administrative process. Those claimants will receive a multiplier that doubles the mileage used to calculate their payments.

Payments for eligible drivers will come from a fund managed by the settlement administrator. The announced figures do not establish what any particular driver will receive; the payment calculation and individual eligibility remain subject to the final settlement process.

Does the settlement change Lyft drivers’ status now?
No. The Labor Commissioner says Proposition 22 took effect after the settlement’s covered period and that the agreement neither requires Lyft to reclassify drivers going forward nor provides relief for work after December 15, 2020. This is a resolution of claims about past work, not a change to the rules governing current Lyft work.
