As of October 5, 2026, there is no evidence here of a standard, publicly priced seat that a reader can simply book for either service. Virgin Galactic is collecting interest in a future booking release, Blue Origin has not published a standard New Shepard fare or current seat schedule in the reviewed information, and NASA’s planned Axiom mission is not a retail ticket offer.
What “space tourism” means in practice
The phrase covers at least two distinct offerings. A suborbital flight crosses into space for a short experience but does not enter orbit around Earth. An orbital private astronaut mission reaches the ISS and involves a different mission profile. They are not interchangeable trips, and a planned government-ordered mission should not be mistaken for a seat available to the public.

| Offering | Flight profile | Price information in the sources reviewed | Availability information as of October 5, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blue Origin New Shepard | Suborbital passenger flight | Blue Origin had not stated a standard fare on its passenger page. An auction result or press estimate is not a published standard ticket price. | The FAA passenger-recognition roster records flight NS-38 at Launch Site One on January 22, 2026. Blue Origin’s passenger page did not establish a current manifest, resumption date, or seats for sale. |
| Virgin Galactic astronaut expeditions | Suborbital passenger flight | Space.com reported on August 13, 2026 that the next fare had not been disclosed. The last reported fare was $750,000, following earlier reported levels of $600,000 and $450,000; these are historical prices, not a current offer. | The company’s public site invited visitors to register interest in a Fall 2026 booking release. Space.com reported on August 13, 2026 that the first flight of the new spaceship had moved to February 2027. Neither a target date nor an interest form guarantees a flight or an available seat. |
| Axiom private astronaut mission to the ISS | Orbital mission to the ISS | NASA’s mission information does not state a retail fare. | NASA says its fifth Axiom private astronaut mission is targeted to launch no earlier than January 2027. A NASA mission order is not a consumer booking offer. |
Can you buy a ticket to space now?
Not on the evidence available here: neither operator’s reviewed information establishes a currently purchasable, standard-priced seat. Virgin Galactic’s interest registration is a way to signal interest, not confirmation of a booking or flight date. Blue Origin’s official passenger page describes its experience but does not state current seat availability or a flight schedule. Check the operator directly for live booking terms before treating any announcement, registration, or historical fare as an offer.
Orbital missions require extra caution when interpreting announcements. NASA’s planned Axiom flight, along with listed future missions by Vast targeted no earlier than summer 2027 and Voyager Technologies targeted no earlier than 2028, describes mission planning and access to low Earth orbit—not public retail inventory. NASA frames private astronaut missions as part of a transition toward commercial space stations while maintaining access to low Earth orbit.

How the suborbital operators describe their experiences
Blue Origin’s New Shepard
Blue Origin describes New Shepard as a suborbital passenger experience and says its two-day, on-site astronaut training program covers the mission profile, safety systems, zero-gravity protocols, and simulations. The company also says the crew escape system has been successfully tested three times and that nearly 99% of the vehicle’s dry mass is reused. These are operator statements, not independent findings about overall passenger risk or lifecycle environmental impact.
Virgin Galactic
Virgin Galactic presents its service as astronaut expeditions and separately promotes suborbital research missions. The February 2027 date reported by Space.com was a revised target for the first flight of a new spaceship, with more time needed for avionics and systems installations, according to CEO Michael Colglazier as quoted in that report. It should be read as a schedule target, not a confirmed passenger flight date.

How much does luxury space tourism cost?
There is no complete, current price list in the sources reviewed. Virgin Galactic’s $750,000 figure is the last fare reported by Space.com on August 13, 2026, not a current published price; the report said the next fare had not been stated. It also cited earlier reported fare points of $600,000 and $450,000. Blue Origin’s standard New Shepard fare was not stated on its passenger page, and the NASA material on Axiom’s mission did not give a retail price. An auction result, estimate, or mission budget should not be presented as the normal price of a ticket.

Commercial human spaceflight is not subject to airline-style passenger safety certification. The Federal Aviation Administration says its human-spaceflight responsibilities are designed to protect people on the ground and other users of the National Airspace System. It also states: “Congress, with few exceptions, limits the FAA’s regulatory oversight of the health and safety of commercial human space flight occupants.”

FAA requirements address crew qualifications and training for normal, emergency, and abort situations, as well as requirements involving life support, smoke detection, and fire suppression. Federal law also requires an informed-consent framework: participants must receive information about launch and reentry risks and hazards. That framework does not amount to a government guarantee that a passenger flight is safe. The official material reviewed does not provide a comparable injury or death-rate dataset for these operators, so it cannot support a comparative safety ranking.

How to assess a booking announcement
- Identify the flight profile. Confirm whether the offer concerns a suborbital experience or an orbital mission to the ISS.
- Separate interest from a sale. Registration, an announcement, and a booking offer are different stages; look for explicit seat availability and purchase terms.
- Check what the price represents. Distinguish a current published fare from a previous fare, an auction, or an estimate.
- Read dates as targets when described that way. A “no earlier than” mission target or a revised company schedule is not a guaranteed launch date.
- Understand the safety disclosure. Review the operator’s participant information and informed-consent terms rather than treating regulatory oversight or company safety claims as a passenger-safety certification.
