A Cat 1 modem’s nominal peak rates are 10 Mbps downlink and 5 Mbps uplink, making it a fit for some mobile IoT devices that need more data capacity than narrowband options provide. Those figures are category maximums, not guaranteed real-world speeds.
What LTE Cat 1 means
LTE Cat 1 is short for LTE User Equipment (UE) Category 1. “UE” means the cellular device or modem; the category describes the LTE capabilities it supports. The device still needs a compatible LTE network and service.

The LTE UE category set dates to 3GPP Release 8. In its 2016 technical overview, GSMA describes Cat 1 as a full LTE category with two RF receiver chains, full-duplex operation, and support for both Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD) and Time Division Duplexing (TDD). FDD uses separate frequency resources for uplink and downlink; TDD assigns them different times on a shared channel. GSMA’s overview of low-power wide-area technologies gives Cat 1 nominal peak rates of 10 Mbps downlink and 5 Mbps uplink.

What speed does Cat 1 support?
The 10 Mbps downlink and 5 Mbps uplink figures describe the category’s nominal peak capabilities. Downlink is data sent from the network to the device; uplink is data sent from the device to the network. They are not typical speed-test results or a carrier performance guarantee. Actual throughput depends on factors including signal quality, available spectrum, network congestion, and device implementation.

As a practical selection guide, AWS places Cat 1 above LTE-M and NB-IoT for supported upload and download throughput, and suggests it for mobile use cases that need more than 1 Mbps but less than roughly 5 Mbps. That is guidance for choosing a technology, not a replacement for Cat 1’s category-level peak figures. AWS IoT Wireless documentation discusses the available cellular connectivity options; confirm support for the specific service and region before deployment.
How Cat 1 differs from other cellular IoT options
Cat 1 is one option among several LTE categories used in connected devices. The right choice depends on the application’s data needs, mobility, power budget, and network availability—not just a peak-rate number.

| Option | Difference from Cat 1 | When it may matter |
|---|---|---|
| Cat 1 bis | A related standard-LTE design that removes the second receive chain, according to Telenor. | When choosing a modem, antenna design, or device architecture. The simpler RF design does not guarantee longer battery life. |
| LTE-M / Cat-M1 | A distinct, lower-complexity IoT category. The cited Release 13 description specifies 1.4 MHz UE bandwidth and a 1 Mbps peak rate in each direction. | When modest data needs and low-power IoT features matter more than Cat 1 throughput. |
| NB-IoT | A narrowband alternative discussed for small, infrequent payloads and stationary devices. | When sparse data, power efficiency, or challenging indoor locations are priorities. |
| Cat 4 and higher | Higher-throughput LTE categories. | When applications need sustained higher throughput, such as video or frequent large transfers. |
The Cat-M1 figures come from the ETSI/3GPP Release 13 capability description. Telenor’s Cellular IoT overview discusses Cat 1 bis and the use-case distinctions between cellular IoT options.

Cat 1 is not LTE-M
LTE-M, also called Cat-M1, is a separate category introduced later than Cat 1. Although both are LTE technologies used in IoT, the names are not interchangeable: Cat 1 is not “LTE-M.” In the cited Release 13 description, Cat-M1 has a 1.4 MHz UE bandwidth and peak rates of 1 Mbps in both directions, compared with Cat 1’s nominal 10 Mbps downlink and 5 Mbps uplink.

What Cat 1 bis changes—and what it does not
Cat 1 bis is a related device design that uses one receive chain instead of Cat 1’s two, while remaining on standard LTE infrastructure. That hardware simplification can reduce RF complexity, but it does not establish that every Cat 1 bis device uses less energy. Battery life also depends on signal conditions, modem design, firmware, traffic, and time spent with the radio active.
Where Cat 1 is used
Cat 1 can suit mobile M2M and IoT devices that need a moderate, relatively steady data connection. GSMA’s 2019 expert-panel examples include mobile M2M gateways, wearables, and streaming audio. Telenor lists asset tracking and logistics, vehicle telematics, connected equipment, payment terminals, and kiosks as possible Cat 1 or Cat 1 bis applications. These examples do not mean that every carrier or device supports every feature.

How to check whether Cat 1 fits a deployment
Compare the requirements of the actual device and service rather than choosing by category name alone. Check these items before committing to hardware or a rollout:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Throughput: Estimate required uplink and downlink capacity, then leave headroom for variable field conditions.
- Mobility: Confirm the device and carrier support the intended mobility and handover behavior.
- Power: Assess consumption against the application’s traffic pattern and real coverage conditions; the category alone does not determine battery life.
- Regional bands: Verify that the module supports the LTE frequency bands used in every target country.
- Network access: Check that the operator, SIM or eSIM plan, roaming arrangements, and device certification cover the intended service.
- Voice and messaging: If SMS or voice/VoLTE is needed, verify support on the specific device and target carrier.
Coverage, band use, operator support, and roaming can vary by market and change over time, so a general Cat 1 definition cannot confirm that a particular module will work with a particular carrier.
