Low Power Mode vs. Turning Off Background App Refresh: Which Saves More Battery?

Low Power Mode generally has greater battery-saving potential because it bundles several reductions, including turning off Background App Refresh. Disabling refresh alone is a narrower option with fewer trade-offs, and Apple provides no universal percentage comparison.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Low Power Mode is the broader battery-saving choice and will generally reduce more power use than switching off Background App Refresh alone. It disables Background App Refresh as part of a larger bundle that also changes display, syncing, downloads, email fetching, photo uploads and some performance behavior. Turning off Background App Refresh is the more targeted option when you want to limit background updating without applying those other changes.

Apple has not published a controlled, apples-to-apples test that converts either setting into a guaranteed percentage or number of extra hours. The practical result depends on your apps, signal strength, battery condition and what the phone is doing, so use the Battery screen to identify the actual source of drain.

The short answer: broader savings versus narrower control

Low Power Mode affects several systems at once. Apple lists Background App Refresh as one of the functions it turns off, alongside lower display brightness, a 30-second Auto-Lock default, paused iCloud Photos activity, disabled automatic downloads and email fetch, and reduced visual effects. On supported iPhone models, some work may also run more slowly, and ProMotion displays are limited to 60 frames per second while the mode is active. Those combined changes are why it has greater potential to reduce consumption than one background-refresh switch.

Turning off Background App Refresh addresses only the scheduled process that lets apps check for new content when you are not actively using them. It does not stop every kind of background activity. Music playback, location tracking, calls and other work can continue in the background and appear separately in battery diagnostics.

Neither Apple’s Low Power Mode documentation nor its battery-drain guidance supplies a universal savings figure for this comparison. Treat “which saves more?” as a question about scope and trade-offs, not a promise of a specific percentage.

What Low Power Mode changes

It includes Background App Refresh automatically

When Low Power Mode is on, Background App Refresh is turned off. Enabling the two settings together therefore does not create a second, independent Background App Refresh saving while Low Power Mode is active. Apple documents this as an included feature change in its current support guide: Use Low Power Mode to save battery life on your iPhone or iPad.

Display and lock behavior

Low Power Mode reduces display brightness and sets Auto-Lock to 30 seconds. The shorter active-screen time matters most for people who leave the display on while reading, navigating menus or waiting for an app to respond. If you manually change brightness or Auto-Lock while the mode is active, the phone can still be using a different setting than the default Apple describes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Networked and cloud activity

Automatic downloads and email fetch are disabled, and iCloud Photos activity is paused. These changes can reduce radio use and processor work, but they also mean that new mail fetched on a schedule, newly available downloads and photo synchronization may wait until normal behavior resumes.

Visual effects and performance

Some visual effects are reduced. Apple’s iPhone Power Modes guide also warns that certain tasks can run more slowly in Low Power Mode; on iPhones with ProMotion, the display refresh rate is limited to 60 frames per second rather than using higher rates. The exact effect is noticeable mainly during scrolling, animation, intensive processing or other tasks that normally benefit from higher performance. See Apple’s current guide at Save battery life with Power Modes on iPhone.

When it turns itself off

On iPhone, Low Power Mode automatically turns off after the battery reaches 80 percent while charging. That is a behavior threshold, not a measurement of battery saved. If you need the mode again after charging, turn it on manually.

What turning off Background App Refresh changes

The narrower mechanism

Background App Refresh allows apps to check for updates and prepare content before you open them. Switching it off prevents that refresh activity, so an app may need to load current information after you launch it. The setting does not erase the app, block foreground use or guarantee that every background process stops.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why the setting is not a complete background-work kill switch

Apple’s battery guidance uses “Background Activity” for a broader category. It can include an app playing music, tracking your location or doing other work while it is not visible. That category is not synonymous with Background App Refresh. If an app consumes power because it is navigating, streaming audio or continuously using location, disabling refresh alone may leave the main drain untouched. Apple explains the diagnostic category in If the battery in your iPhone or iPad drains too quickly.

What you give up

With refresh disabled, news feeds, social timelines, weather data and similar content may be less current when first opened. The app can still update after you use it, and notifications delivered through Apple’s notification system are a separate mechanism; do not assume that turning off refresh is equivalent to silencing notifications.

Side-by-side comparison

Comparison point Low Power Mode Background App Refresh off
Primary purpose Extend runtime by bundling multiple reductions in power use. Stop scheduled app refresh work when apps are not in use.
Background App Refresh Automatically turned off while the mode is active. Explicitly disabled by the user.
Display and Auto-Lock Brightness is reduced and Auto-Lock defaults to 30 seconds. No display or Auto-Lock change.
Mail, downloads and photos Email fetch and automatic downloads are disabled; iCloud Photos activity is paused. Those functions are not changed by this setting.
Visual effects and speed Some effects are reduced; some tasks may run more slowly, and ProMotion is limited to 60 Hz. No bundled performance or refresh-rate change.
Control and granularity One switch with several linked trade-offs. A focused intervention for refresh activity.
Apple-published battery-life figure Not stated; Apple describes behavior rather than a guaranteed percentage or number of hours. Not stated; no controlled head-to-head figure is provided.

The feature descriptions and model-specific behavior in this table come from Apple’s Low Power Mode and Power Modes documentation, while the distinction between refresh and broader background work comes from its battery-drain guidance.

Why there is no universal percentage winner

The two controls affect different workloads. A phone that spends much of the day fetching mail, synchronizing photos, downloading updates and keeping the display awake has more opportunities to benefit from Low Power Mode’s bundle. A phone whose largest avoidable cost is a frequently refreshing content app may show a meaningful response to the narrower switch and little additional benefit from changes it does not need.

Battery condition, cellular signal, Wi-Fi availability, screen brightness, camera use, games, navigation, streaming and temperature can dominate the result. Apple’s published pages do not identify a device model, iOS version, test duration, app set or sample size for a controlled comparison of only these two settings. Any result expressed as a guaranteed percentage would therefore go beyond the available evidence.

Which setting fits your situation?

You need the broadest quick reduction

Use Low Power Mode when the battery is low and you need the phone to last until you can charge it. It is also the practical choice before a long trip, an event or a day away from an outlet when you accept that syncing, downloads, display behavior and peak smoothness may be reduced.

You want background updates reduced but normal behavior elsewhere

Turn off Background App Refresh when you prefer to keep your usual brightness, Auto-Lock, mail-fetch schedule, downloads, photo activity and display performance. This is the better fit when you are testing whether preloading by apps is responsible for drain or when you do not want Low Power Mode’s wider effects.

A single app appears to be the problem

Start with Settings > Battery and inspect the app list and activity categories. If one app shows substantial background activity, consider whether its function is music playback, navigation, location tracking or another task that refresh control will not address. Removing or limiting that activity is more targeted than leaving every system-wide Low Power Mode trade-off in place.

You need uninterrupted synchronization

Choose neither setting during a period when immediate photo synchronization, automatic downloads or scheduled email fetching is essential. Low Power Mode pauses or disables those functions, while turning off refresh can delay content preparation in apps that depend on it.

How to turn on Low Power Mode

iPhone 15 and later

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Battery.
  3. Tap Power Mode.
  4. Turn on Low Power Mode.

Apple places the control under Power Mode on iPhone 15 and later. The exact labels can vary slightly with an iOS update, but the model-specific path is documented in Apple’s support instructions.

iPhone 14 and earlier

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Battery.
  3. Turn on Low Power Mode.

You can also add Low Power Mode to Control Center for a faster toggle. The mode remains active until you turn it off or the battery reaches 80 percent while charging.

Confirm that it is active

Look for the Low Power Mode indicator in the status area or return to Settings > Battery. If the phone behaves differently after activation, check whether a shorter Auto-Lock, paused photo activity or reduced refresh rate explains the change before treating it as a fault.

How to turn off Background App Refresh

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Background App Refresh.
  4. Tap Background App Refresh again if your iOS version shows a page of connection choices.
  5. Select Off.

Some iOS versions also present connection choices such as Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi & Cellular and may show switches for individual apps. Selecting Off is the system-wide option. If you leave individual switches available, use them to preserve refresh only where delayed content would cause a problem; the labels and available controls can change between iOS releases.

After changing the setting, open the apps you rely on and note whether their content is simply fetched when opened. If the battery drain continues, return to the Battery screen rather than assuming refresh was the cause.

Use Battery settings to find the real drain

Check the usage chart and app list

  1. Open Settings and tap Battery.
  2. Review the usage graph for the period in which the battery fell quickly.
  3. Inspect the apps and system entries with the largest shares of battery use.
  4. Open an entry to see whether the activity was mainly on screen, in the background or associated with another category shown by your iOS version.

Apple’s guidance distinguishes “Background Activity” from simply having Background App Refresh enabled. A high background figure can reflect music playback or location tracking, so match the category to what you were doing at the time.

Match the symptom to the control

  • Frequent content preparation: Test Background App Refresh off and watch the next comparable usage period.
  • Display-heavy use: Low Power Mode’s brightness and Auto-Lock changes may have more opportunity to help.
  • Navigation or location: Refresh control is unlikely to address continuous location work; review the app’s function and permissions.
  • Streaming or music: Background playback can remain a major consumer even when refresh is disabled.
  • Cloud synchronization: Remember that Low Power Mode pauses iCloud Photos activity and disables automatic downloads until normal behavior returns.

Compare like with like

To learn what helps your own phone, change one setting at a time and compare similar days: the same signal conditions, screen brightness, apps and approximate screen-on time. This is a personal observation, not an Apple-certified battery-life measurement, and it cannot establish a universal result for other devices.

Trade-offs that are easy to miss

Low Power Mode can change the phone’s feel

Reduced visual effects and a 60-Hz limit on ProMotion displays can make scrolling or animation look less fluid. Slower processing may affect demanding tasks. These are deliberate power-saving behaviors, not signs that the battery or processor is failing.

Deferred work can arrive later

Paused iCloud Photos activity, disabled email fetch and blocked automatic downloads can make information appear late. When Low Power Mode is turned off, queued work may resume, increasing network or processor activity for a period. Plan around that if you need a large photo library or download to be current immediately.

Refresh off changes convenience, not app availability

Apps remain installed and usable. They simply may not have prepared new content in advance. A longer initial load after opening an app is expected; it is not evidence that the setting failed.

Using both settings together

There is no separate Background App Refresh saving to add while Low Power Mode already has it disabled. Turning on Low Power Mode after manually switching refresh off can still leave the other Low Power Mode changes in effect, but the refresh portion overlaps completely. If you later turn Low Power Mode off, your original Background App Refresh choice remains the one that governs refresh.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes and fixes

Expecting refresh off to stop all background use

Check Battery activity categories first. Music, navigation and location tracking are examples of work that can continue independently. Address the activity that is actually listed instead of applying a setting unrelated to it.

Assuming Low Power Mode always adds a fixed number of hours

Apple publishes no guaranteed percentage or hour figure for this comparison. Treat the mode as a bundle of power-saving behavior whose effect scales with how much of that behavior your phone would otherwise perform.

Looking for Low Power Mode in the wrong menu

On iPhone 15 and later, check Settings > Battery > Power Mode. On iPhone 14 and earlier, the switch is directly under Settings > Battery.

Forgetting that charging can turn it off

If the mode disappears after the phone reaches 80 percent, that is the documented automatic shutoff. Re-enable it after unplugging if you still need the broader restrictions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Diagnosing from one unusual day

A weak cellular signal, hot environment, large download or extended camera session can overwhelm the effect of either setting. Use the Battery history and compare more than one similar period before deciding which control is worthwhile.

A practical decision checklist

  • Need the phone to last as long as possible right now? Turn on Low Power Mode.
  • Want only to stop scheduled app updating? Turn off Background App Refresh.
  • See navigation, music or location listed as background activity? Investigate that workload instead of relying on refresh control.
  • Need current mail, photos or automatic downloads immediately? Avoid Low Power Mode until the work is complete.
  • Want evidence from your own device? Check Settings > Battery, change one setting, and compare similar usage periods.

The evidence supports a clear direction: Low Power Mode has the greater potential because it changes more power-related functions, while Background App Refresh off offers finer control with fewer side effects. The size of the benefit remains device- and usage-dependent, not a fixed Apple-published number.
