If that remote is unavailable, choose a universal remote only after confirming that it supports your player model and the controls you need—not just power. Apps and other-device controls may help, but they work only with specific players and setups.
Find the player model before choosing a remote
Check the label on the back or underside of the player, the original paperwork, or the manufacturer’s support page. Use the full model number when searching: remotes that look similar may not provide the same commands or work with the same players.

Search the manufacturer’s support or parts page for a replacement remote associated with that exact model. Panasonic’s support page, for example, provides access to parts and accessories and a model/serial-number lookup: Panasonic parts and accessories. This is a route to check, not evidence that a particular remote is currently in stock.
If you buy from a third-party seller, compare the player’s model number against the seller’s compatibility list before ordering. Do not rely on the remote’s appearance or a broad claim that it works with Blu-ray players.

When a universal remote is a good option
A universal remote can be a practical replacement if its compatibility information names your player or supports its manufacturer and Blu-ray functions. Sony notes that compatibility depends on support for the player model or manufacturer and that some functions may not be accessible: Sony: Can I use a universal remote control for my Blu-ray Disc player?
Before buying, verify that the remote can handle the functions you actually use:

A remote that powers the player on and off may still fail at menu navigation or other commands. Sony’s guidance makes clear that feature access can vary, so check the function list or setup instructions rather than assuming full control.
Some universal remotes use device codes; Sony says recent Sony universal remotes may let you program the DVD button for a Blu-ray player, and notes that some non-Sony remotes may do so too. That is not a guarantee for every remote or player. Follow the remote’s instructions and confirm the needed functions after programming.

Learning remotes and the missing-original problem
A learning remote can capture infrared commands from a working remote. Sony describes its learning remotes as able to learn infrared frequencies: Sony universal remote guidance.
Because your original remote is lost, you may not be able to teach commands directly. This route is useful only if you can obtain a working compatible remote to teach from, or if the learning remote also offers suitable codes or another supported setup method. Check those requirements before choosing it.

Could a phone app control the player?
Treat an app as a model-specific fallback, not a general substitute. Check the exact player model, your phone’s operating system, network requirements, and whether the app still operates.

Panasonic’s Remote 2011 page names five compatible models and requires a suitable shared Wi-Fi network for the player and phone. Panasonic also states that the service terminated on June 30, 2020; an existing installation may continue, but future operation is not guaranteed: Panasonic Remote 2011 app information. Panasonic’s broader compatibility page separately lists select 2011 and 2012 models: Panasonic Blu-ray remote app compatibility. Check the manual before trying a TV remote or keyboard
A TV remote might control some player functions through HDMI-CEC, and a USB keyboard or mouse might work on some models. Neither is established as a reliable general replacement for a Blu-ray remote. Look up your player’s manual for explicit support and setup instructions before depending on either option.
Choose based on fit, not on the word “universal”
Use this order when weighing your options:
- Exact replacement: Best starting point when the manufacturer lists a remote for your precise player model. Confirm part number and availability.
- Universal remote: Consider it when the compatibility list covers your model or manufacturer and confirms the essential playback and menu controls.
- Learning remote: Consider it if you can access a working remote to teach commands, or the replacement supports another suitable setup method.
- App or other-device control: Use only when your model’s documentation confirms compatibility and the required network or connection setup.
Availability, return terms, and feature coverage vary by seller and remote. Check them before purchasing, especially if the compatibility listing does not identify your exact player model.
