Lossy vs. Lossless Video Compression: What’s the Difference?

Lossless compression preserves the encoded video exactly; lossy compression reduces data by permanently discarding information. Here’s how to choose.

Lossless compression makes a video more compact while preserving the encoded source exactly; lossy compression makes a more substantial reduction by permanently discarding information. Choose lossless when exact preservation or further editing matters. Choose lossy when a smaller file or lower delivery bitrate matters more than an exact reconstruction.

What do “lossy” and “lossless” mean?

Compression reduces the data needed to store or transmit video. Lossless compression represents redundancies more efficiently so a decoder can reconstruct the encoded source exactly. It is not the same as uncompressed video: a lossless format can save storage compared with an uncompressed representation.

Lossy compression discards some information to reduce data more aggressively. Once that information is discarded, decoding cannot restore it. How noticeable the change is depends on the source and encoding choices, but the reconstruction is not exact.

Lossy vs. lossless at a glance

Question Lossless Lossy
Can decoding reproduce the encoded source exactly? Yes, by definition. No. Some information has been discarded.
Main tradeoff Preserves data, but files and encoding demands can still be substantial. Can reduce file size or delivery bitrate, at the cost of irreversible information loss.
Typical fit Preservation, scientific imaging, screen recording, or an editing intermediate where avoiding generational loss matters. Distribution and streaming when file size and bandwidth are priorities.
Does “visually lossless” mean exact? Not applicable: mathematical losslessness means exact reconstruction. No. It describes loss that is not detectable to the eye after decompression, not identical data.

When should you use each type?

Choose lossless for preservation and continued work

Use lossless when preserving the encoded source exactly is important: for example, in archival preservation, scientific imaging, screen recording, or as an intermediate for editing. Re-encoding already-lossy footage as lossless does not bring back information that was previously discarded; it only preserves the source presented to that new encode.

The Federal Agencies Digital Guidelines Initiative (FADGI) recommends lossless compression for archival repositories in its born-digital video guidance. That guidance dates to 2014, so treat its recommendation as archival guidance published in that context, not as a universal rule for every current workflow.

Choose lossy for efficient delivery

Lossy compression is often the practical choice for sharing, streaming, or keeping delivery files manageable when exact reconstruction is not required. The tradeoff is permanent loss: making a later copy from a lossy encode cannot recover the discarded source detail.

What does “visually lossless” mean?

“Visually lossless” is still lossy. RFC 8761 defines the term as lossy compression in which lost data are not detectable to the eye after compression and decompression. It describes perceived visibility, not a guarantee that every pixel value or encoded bit matches the source. A video can look unchanged to a viewer and still fail an exact comparison.

Codec names do not tell the whole story

A codec name by itself does not always establish whether a particular encode is lossless. Configuration matters. For example, x265 documents a lossless mode; it also notes that all its presets can generate lossless video streams. In that encoder, slower presets generally yield better compression ratios but take longer to encode. That is an encoder-specific tradeoff, not a universal benchmark for other codecs or footage.

FFV1 is a documented lossless, intra-frame video format. RFC 9043 says that, compared with uncompressed video, FFV1 offers storage compression, frame fixity, and self-description, making it useful as a preservation or intermediate format. The specification identifies long-term audiovisual preservation, scientific imaging, and screen recording among its applications.

The Alliance for Open Media describes AV1 as an open video codec designed to provide high-quality compression with greater efficiency than previous codecs, and notes deployment across platforms and devices. Actual results and compatibility depend on the encoder, decoder, settings, and device; that description is not a guarantee for every AV1 encode or playback system.

Intraframe and interframe are a separate distinction

Intraframe coding treats frames individually. Interframe coding exploits redundancy across adjacent frames. These terms describe how frames relate during coding, not whether the result is lossy or lossless: explain fidelity separately from the across-frame method.

FADGI’s 2014 guidance prefers intraframe compression in its described archival context, where it discusses interframe compression as permanently losing redundant data. Keep that recommendation in its archival context rather than treating “interframe” as synonymous with lossy for every codec and configuration.

How do file size and bitrate relate to quality?

Lossless compression can reduce storage needs compared with uncompressed video, but it does not guarantee a small file or quick encode. Lossy compression can reduce delivery bitrate, but the outcome depends on more than resolution alone. Frame rate, color depth, codec, encoding parameters, scene complexity, and motion also affect bitrate.

RFC 9317 (2022) gives typical bitrate ranges of 6–8 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p, 4.5–7 Mbps for H.265 at 1080p, and 10–20 Mbps for H.265 at 2160p. These are examples published in that RFC, not universal targets or a controlled direct comparison of the codecs. A suitable bitrate for a particular video depends on its content and encoding setup.

How to choose for your workflow

  • You need an exact preservation or analysis copy: use a documented lossless workflow and verify that the encoder is actually configured for lossless output.
  • You plan to edit and export repeatedly: consider a lossless intermediate to avoid adding further lossy generations; it cannot restore losses already present in the source.
  • You need a practical file for streaming or sharing: use a lossy encode when smaller files or lower bitrate outweigh exact reconstruction.
  • You need both preservation and delivery: retain a lossless master where appropriate, then create a separate lossy distribution copy. Keep the two purposes distinct.
  • You are comparing codec options: check the specific encoder mode, settings, playback compatibility, and intended use rather than inferring fidelity from the codec name alone.

Does this matter when looping a video on YouTube?

Compression affects the video file and its delivery requirements; keeping a prerecorded video running as a YouTube live stream is a separate operational task. For that use case, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos or playlists to YouTube, so a computer does not have to stay on. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo for details.
