There is no comparable, representative global figure in the available evidence for how much gamers spent on loot boxes in 2026. The strongest recent figures here measure UK young people’s awareness, participation and reported payment methods—not total spending. A historical market estimate put loot-box spending above $15 billion in 2020, but that is not a 2026 estimate.
How much do gamers spend on loot boxes?
The evidence does not establish a worldwide 2026 total or a current universal average per player. The figures below measure different things, in different populations and years; they should not be combined into one estimate.

| Measure | Figure and what it covers |
|---|---|
| Historical global market estimate | More than $15 billion in 2020, attributed to Juniper Research (2021) and cited by Tomomichi Amano and Andrey Simonov in their 2024 paper. This is a historical estimate, not a 2026 total or the paper’s own market census. |
| UK young people’s awareness and reported use | In the UK Gambling Commission’s 2024 survey, 63% of participants aged 11–17 who answered the in-game items questions said they knew they could pay to open loot boxes, packs or chests; 27% said they had done so. The survey base was 3,869 answering participants. These are awareness and self-reported use measures, not amounts spent. |
| Reported spending per purchase | A UK government 2022 evidence response summarized a player survey in which 39% reported typically spending more than £10 per loot-box purchase and 61% less than £10. It is an older survey result, not a current universal average; the government also cautioned that evidence varied by method and platform and that some statistics did not account for how popular particular games were. |
These measures answer separate questions: market size, whether young respondents had paid, and what some surveyed players typically spent per purchase. Awareness or ever having paid cannot be converted into a spending total. Nor can the 2020 estimate be projected forward to fill the missing 2026 figure.

A loot box is a game feature containing apparently randomized items: the player does not know the specific reward before opening it. A box may be earned through gameplay, bought directly, or accessed using virtual currency. The contents can be cosmetic, useful for progression, or relevant to competition, depending on the game. Not every box is paid, and not every reward changes how a game is played.

The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) uses the notice “In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items)” for paid digital goods or premiums whose specific contents are unknown before purchase. That category can include loot boxes, item packs and mystery awards; the ESRB says the term “loot box” does not cover every randomized purchase mechanic. As the ESRB put it when introducing the notice, “We want to ensure that the new label covers all transactions with randomized elements.”
A purchase of a known cosmetic or other specified item is different from paying for randomized contents: in the latter case, the buyer does not know which specific digital good they will receive. That distinction matters when comparing games and interpreting spending data.

How do people pay for loot boxes?
In the UK Gambling Commission’s 2024 survey, 1,004 UK young people who had paid to open loot boxes, packs or chests were asked how they had paid. The question allowed multiple answers, so the categories overlap and must not be added together.
| Reported method | Share of those 1,004 respondents |
|---|---|
| Virtual currency obtained without spending money | 58% |
| Virtual currency bought with money | 54% |
| Money from their own bank account | 51% |
| Gift card | 50% |
These are reported payment methods among young people who said they had paid; they do not show how much was spent. They also illustrate why a game’s box price may not be immediately obvious: a player might pay for a bundle of virtual currency and then spend some of that balance on a randomized item.

The UK government’s 2022 evidence response recorded player concerns about unclear odds, difficulty finding cumulative purchase histories, and currency bundles that leave small balances and can encourage another purchase. These are reported consumer concerns, not proof that every game uses the same design.
How can you compare a game’s loot-box spending design?
Before spending, or when evaluating a game for a child, look at the whole transaction rather than only the displayed box price. These checks reflect the types of access, rewards and consumer concerns described by the UK government and ESRB:
Rank #4
- ICONIC GIFT BOX DESIGN: This cube makes any room or party feel like a fun event.
- SPACIOUS & LIGHTWEIGHT STORAGE: 14-inch cube holds stuffs without taking up too much space.
- PERFECT FOR PARTIES & BIRTHDAYS:Uuse as decor, storage, or a creative gift box at themed celebrations.
- EASY TO ASSEMBLE: Ships flat and folds quickly into shape—sturdy enough to fill, light enough to carry or move with ease.
- BOX ONLY, BALLOON NOT INCLUDED: This listing includes the 14” x 14” x 14” cardboard box only—balloon available separately.
- How access is obtained: Can the box be earned by playing, purchased directly, or opened with virtual currency that itself costs money?
- What is known before buying: Is the item specified in advance, or are the contents randomized? If odds are shown, are they plainly disclosed before the purchase?
- Whether the real price is clear: Can you see the money cost at the point of purchase, or must you convert from a currency bundle? Does the bundle leave a balance too small to use without buying more?
- What the reward does: Is it cosmetic, or can it affect progression or competitive utility?
- Whether spending is manageable: Are spending controls, parental authorization and a usable purchase history available?
A game with earned access and a clearly stated cosmetic reward presents a different spending decision from one that requires paid currency for a randomized reward with gameplay utility. The comparison is about the design and the transaction, not a claim that one arrangement is automatically safe or harmful.

Whether a particular loot-box mechanic legally counts as gambling depends on the jurisdiction and the details of the transaction; the evidence here does not establish a universal legal answer. The UK government reports an association between loot-box purchases and problem gambling, but says the evidence has not established causation. An association does not show that loot boxes cause problem gambling.

What does the evidence say about harm and spending limits?
Amano and Simonov’s June 18, 2024 study analyzed transaction and gameplay data from one prototypical mobile game. In their model, the value of loot boxes for regular players was primarily complementary to gameplay, while for high spenders it came largely from the direct utility of the lottery mechanism. Those findings describe the study’s dataset and assumptions; they cannot establish how all players or games behave.
The authors’ simulations favored spending caps over a blanket ban in that setting. Their abstract states, “Our estimates favor spending caps over a blanket ban on loot boxes.” This is a model-based result for their one-game analysis, not proof that caps will have the same effects across games or policy settings.

Can you control spending on loot boxes?
Because purchase paths and controls vary by game and platform, there is no single menu path that applies everywhere. Use the following checks before buying, and consult the game or platform’s own settings and support information for the exact controls available:
Quick Recap
- Check the purchase flow before confirming: Identify whether you are paying real money, spending currency bought with money, or using currency earned in play. Confirm the real-money equivalent if the game makes you convert from a bundle.
- Set a limit before play: Decide what you are willing to spend over a defined period, and stop at that amount rather than treating a leftover currency balance as a reason to buy again.
- Review purchase records: Check the game or platform account history so individual transactions do not obscure cumulative spending.
- For a child’s account, check authorization and controls: Find out whether purchases require an adult’s approval and whether spending limits or purchase restrictions can be enabled. Do not assume a control exists without checking that account’s settings.
- Pause if the price or odds are unclear: If you cannot determine the cash cost, contents or relevant odds before purchase, delay the transaction until you can.
