For a free alternative to Google Search, start with Brave Search if you want a search engine that says it maintains its own index; consider Ecosia if its environmental mission appeals to you and you’re comfortable with its use of external search providers. DuckDuckGo, Qwant and Startpage are also options, but their privacy and results arrangements should be checked against their current policies. None is a proven best choice for every query, so compare a few searches that matter to you.
How these five alternatives differ
The important distinction is not just the name on the search box. Some services say they build an independent index; others draw on external search providers. Privacy descriptions also vary in what they establish about search terms, IP addresses and partner sharing.

| Engine | What the available information establishes | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Brave Search | Brave says it operates an independent search index and can be used on its site or set as the default in most major browsers. | It is ad-supported, offers an optional paid ad-free tier and has an optional Google fallback that can mix in results when Brave’s own results may be sparse. Its Web Discovery Project is opt-in and contributes some search and browsing data to improve the index. |
| DuckDuckGo | A matching article describes it as privacy-focused and says it does not track users in the way it says Google does. | That description is secondary reporting; current official privacy-policy wording was not independently confirmed here. Check the service’s current policy if its data handling is central to your choice. |
| Ecosia | Ecosia says search results and related ads may come from Microsoft Bing, Google or European Search Perspective (EUSP). The provider can vary by location, device, privacy permissions and query. | EUSP is currently available only in France. Ecosia says it shares search terms and IP addresses with search partners, anonymizes IP addresses within a maximum of seven days, and does not personalize ads, though ads may reflect a query or general location. |
| Qwant | A matching article describes Qwant as a French search service with privacy claims and a Flash Answers AI feature. | Those current product and privacy details were not independently confirmed against Qwant’s official documentation. Check its current settings and policy rather than assuming a feature or privacy control is unchanged. |
| Startpage | A matching article describes Startpage as an aggregator working with Google and Microsoft Bing, and says it submits requests anonymously without sharing personal information with those partners. | That account was not verified against Startpage’s current official privacy documentation here, so treat it as reported positioning, not a guarantee. |
Choose based on what matters to you
If an independent index matters
Brave is the clearest fit among these five based on the available product information: the company says it operates its own index. If avoiding Google-sourced results is part of your goal, check whether Google fallback mixing is enabled and how it affects your searches. An independent index does not by itself guarantee that every result will be more relevant or comprehensive for your needs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you want to support Ecosia’s mission
Ecosia’s provider can vary, so using it does not mean every query is handled by one fixed search index—or that results never involve Google or Microsoft. Its published privacy explanation says it shares search terms and IP addresses with search partners, with IP addresses anonymized within a maximum of seven days. Read that policy alongside your comfort with partner sharing.

If privacy is your main reason to switch
DuckDuckGo, Qwant and Startpage are often presented as privacy-oriented options, but the available information here does not establish their current policies in enough detail to make a reliable privacy ranking. Look for specifics in each service’s current policy: what information is collected, whether queries or IP addresses are shared with providers, how long data is retained, and which settings you can control.
If you want to control AI features
Brave describes its AI answer feature as optional. The matching article says Qwant’s Flash Answers can be disabled in settings, but that setting was not confirmed against current official documentation. Check the live interface before relying on a particular control.

How to test whether an alternative works for you
- Pick several real searches. Include a local or time-sensitive question, a specific how-to, and a topic where you know which authoritative sources you expect to find.
- Run the same wording on two or three engines. Keep the query identical so differences in results are easier to judge.
- Compare useful coverage, not just the first result. Check whether relevant sources appear, whether results answer the question, and whether ads or summaries make it harder to reach the information you need.
- Review settings and policies for your priorities. Check controls for fallback providers and AI features, and read current privacy details if data handling is the reason you are switching.
- Make one your default only after trying it. Brave says it can be set as the default in most major browsers; the exact steps depend on your browser. You can keep another engine available for queries where the first choice falls short.
What to expect when leaving Google Search
There is no controlled comparison here showing that any of these services is consistently more or less comprehensive than Google. Coverage and relevance can differ by query, location and provider. If an engine misses what you need, try a more specific query or check another service rather than assuming one set of results is definitive.
“Free” describes access to the services, not necessarily an ad-free experience: Brave Search is ad-supported and also has a paid ad-free option. For the other four, the information available here does not establish comparable pricing details, so check each service’s current terms.
