Riot says it is the patch for “year-defining competitive play,” but the tournament had not begun as of October 7, 2026, so no champion’s pick rate, draft priority, or in-game impact at Worlds can yet be reported. The changes point to a few clear areas to watch: nerfs to established pro picks, buffs aimed at widening options, and a Rocketbelt shift from escape utility toward damage.
What changed in the Worlds patch?
Riot published Patch 26.20 on October 6, 2026, and explicitly identified it as the Summoner’s Rift patch for Worlds-level competitive play. The official notes describe balance intent and numerical changes, not tournament outcomes. The implications below are therefore forecasts based on Riot’s stated goals, not evidence that a champion has risen or fallen in the Worlds draft.

Worlds 2026 is scheduled to begin with Play-Ins on October 15. The Play-In Stage runs October 15–18, the Swiss Stage October 23–31, and the Knockout Stage November 3–14, according to the Worlds 2026 Primer. Riot’s Patch 26.20 notes frame the changes as pro tuning: reducing the reliability of some established picks while improving champions Riot sees as potentially near viable.

These changes target damage, lane resources, or reliability. Their effect on draft priority will depend on matchups and team choices once Worlds begins.

| Champion | Patch 26.20 change | Worlds relevance to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Ambessa | Drakehound’s Step passive damage falls from 5–30 (+25% bonus AD) to 5–25 (+20% bonus AD). | Riot says her late-game output has been too reliable for high-mastery players, particularly in pro play. The reduction targets that damage contribution; it does not establish that she will disappear from drafts. |
| Ashe | Attack damage growth per level falls from 3.5 to 3. | Riot calls Ashe a premier pro-play marksman whose raw damage is too high for her utility. This trims scaling damage while leaving her utility role intact. |
| Cassiopeia | Base health falls from 630 to 610, and base mana from 480 to 450. | Riot is targeting early lane resources because her laning remains dominant. The intended pressure is on lane durability and mana, not a demonstrated change in her Worlds results. |
| K’Sante | W mana cost rises at all ranks from 40/45/50/55/60 to 45/50/55/60/65. W damage reduction changes from 30/75% to 25/70%. | Riot wants him to be a less reliable blind pick in coordinated play, specifically reducing early mana efficiency and consistent damage reduction. |
| Yunara | Q passive and active on-hit damage each fall from 5/10/15/20/25 (+20% AP) to 3/8/13/18/23 (+20% AP). W slow no longer stacks with other slows. | Riot is pushing back against a low-interaction scaling pattern and stacked slows. Whether that changes bot-lane priority remains to be seen. |
Which buffs could widen champion options?
Kennen
E bonus attack speed increases by 10 percentage points at every rank, from 40/50/60/70/80% to 50/60/70/80/90%. W passive damage changes from 40/50/60/70/80% total AD to 25/40/55/70/85 plus 100% bonus AD. Riot says the changes are especially intended to help AD Kennen and offset some of Rocketbelt’s downside. That makes Kennen an option to watch, not a confirmed Worlds pick.
Kindred
W’s monster modifier rises from 150% to 165%; E’s slow lasts 1.5 seconds instead of 1 second, and small-monster targeting is removed. Riot describes Kindred as weak and says the design aims to help without making early invades substantially more overwhelming. Whether teams choose Kindred will depend on the jungle matchup and draft, not the buff alone.

Other Summoner’s Rift champion changes
The remaining champion adjustments are worth tracking, but Riot’s inclusion does not mean each is likely to become a Worlds pick. Several are narrowly targeted toward scaling, role strength, or specific ability patterns.
| Champion | Change in Patch 26.20 | What the change is aimed at |
|---|---|---|
| Diana | W shield bonus-health ratio rises from 11% to 14%. | More shield scaling with bonus health. |
| Lillia | R duration changes from 2.5 seconds to 2.5/2.75/3 seconds. | Longer sleep duration at later ranks. |
| Lucian | Attack-damage growth rises from 2.5 to 2.9. | More attack damage from level scaling. |
| Mordekaiser | Q gains more scaling at levels 10–20; R cooldowns fall at ranks one and two. | Improved later Q scaling and more frequent early-rank ultimates. |
| Neeko | E damage and empowered-root duration increase. | More damage and a longer empowered crowd-control window. |
| Swain | Base magic resistance rises, base armor falls, and W damage increases while its cooldown falls. | A shift in defensive stats alongside a stronger, more available W. |
| Tahm Kench | Q healing increases. | More healing from Q. |
| Vayne | Health regeneration increases and Q mana cost becomes a flat 30. | More regeneration and a fixed Q cost. |
| Smolder | Passive and ultimate scaling are adjusted to better support crit builds relative to bruiser builds. | A build-direction nudge; adoption at Worlds is not established. |
| Nautilus | W gains damage over time, shield bonus-health scaling, and duration, alongside bug fixes. | Riot says he is weak in support, jungle, and top and wants to encourage the latter two roles. |
How do the item changes affect the meta?
Rocketbelt trades haste for a stronger active
Hextech Rocketbelt loses half of its ability haste, falling from 20 to 10, while its active damage rises from 100 (+10% AP) to 135 (+15% AP). Riot’s stated aim is to reduce its generic escape value and emphasize aggressive use, especially for AP bruisers relying on all-ins. That is a tradeoff: less frequent ability use, more damage when the active is used, rather than a uniform nerf for every user.

Experimental Hexplate is less attractive for ranged users
The ranged-user modifier falls from 70% to 50% of value, reducing the attack-speed and movement-speed benefits ranged champions receive. Riot cites ranged first-rush top-lane resilience and all-in lethality as the concerns. This is a targeted reduction to ranged use, not a blanket change to every Hexplate user.
Runaan’s Hurricane and tank-item regeneration
Runaan’s Hurricane bolt damage falls from 65% to 60% of attack damage; Riot describes the prior item state as slightly overbuffed. Three tank items receive more health regeneration:

|---|---|---|
| Spirit Visage | 4 | 20 |
| Force of Nature | 20 | 40 |
| Warmog’s Armor | 10 | 30 |
Riot says these items had too little health regeneration. How much the buffs matter in a particular match will depend on champion, build, and game state.
Which patch changes are not Worlds balance changes?
Patch 26.20 also includes Classic, ARAM, and ARAM: Mayhem changes, plus digital cosmetics. Those do not alter the Summoner’s Rift balance picture used for Worlds analysis.

Scoreboard item-counter cleanup
Riot hides many item counters from scoreboard icons while retaining strategically relevant counters such as Tear items and Mejai’s. This is a readability adjustment, not a champion or item balance change.
Replay access becomes player-only
Starting with Patch 26.20, players can access only replays from matches they played. Other players and third-party apps or sites lose replay-download access; Riot says players can still download and watch their own replays in the client. Riot says the restriction addresses security vulnerabilities. This matters to viewers and analysts who rely on replay downloads, but it does not change in-game balance.
What can be concluded before Worlds starts?
Patch 26.20 gives clear signals about Riot’s goals: curb the reliability of several established pro choices, restrain Yunara’s low-interaction scaling pattern, and improve the prospects of champions such as Kennen and Kindred. The item changes shift the incentives around Rocketbelt, ranged Hexplate use, Runaan’s Hurricane, and tank regeneration. None of those design intentions proves which champions teams will prioritize.
