Logto or Microsoft Entra External ID? What to Check Before Deployment

Logto may work as a customer identity service or as an enterprise SSO layer connected to Entra. Compare roles, protocols, tenant features, account behavior, migration work, and pricing before deployment.

Logto can be an alternative identity service for some customer-facing applications, but it is not automatically a like-for-like replacement for Microsoft Entra External ID. First decide which system should manage customer identities and which sign-in flows, security controls, APIs, and account behaviors your application requires. Logto can also federate enterprise sign-in to Microsoft Entra ID, so using the two together may be a better fit than replacing one with the other.

Decide which identity role your application needs

Microsoft describes Entra External ID in external tenants as a customer identity and access management (CIAM) solution for external-facing apps and services. Logto documents authentication for web, mobile, and desktop applications, along with machine-to-machine and device flows, OIDC/OAuth capabilities, and SAML app integration. Those areas overlap, but that does not establish full feature parity or identical operating models.

Use Logto as the application’s identity service

In this design, Logto handles the application’s customer sign-in and identity flows. Evaluate whether it supports the actual methods, account model, tokens, API access, security controls, and operations your product requires. Compare requirements feature by feature rather than assuming that two identity products with similar broad labels are interchangeable.

Use Logto to connect enterprise customers to Entra

Logto can also act as the service provider for enterprise single sign-on (SSO), delegating authentication to a customer’s Microsoft Entra ID through OIDC or SAML. In that architecture, Logto and Entra have different roles; connecting them is not the same as replacing Entra External ID.

Compare the requirements that affect the decision

Decision area Questions to answer What the documentation establishes
Identity role and users Is the platform your primary customer identity service, an enterprise SSO provider, or both? Are users consumers, business customers, or workforce guests? Microsoft positions external tenants for consumer and business customer applications. Logto documents application authentication and enterprise SSO integration; these roles are not identical.
Sign-in and federation Which sign-in methods, identity providers, OIDC or SAML flows, and MFA methods must work? Microsoft’s external-tenant feature comparison lists OIDC, authorization code, and authorization code with PKCE, and shows differences from workforce tenants. Logto documents OIDC and SAML federation with Entra.
Applications and APIs Which SDKs, token claims, API scopes, machine-to-machine flows, or persistent third-party tokens are needed? Logto documents several application and protocol capabilities. Microsoft Graph access through Entra federation requires its own scopes, consent, and token-storage decisions; basic sign-in alone does not grant arbitrary API access.
Enterprise SSO operations Will each customer need a separate connector? How will domains, SAML attributes, user assignment, account linking, and fallback sign-in work? Logto documents client-specific enterprise connectors, domain-based routing, and account linking behavior that should be tested against your users and configuration.
Security and governance Which controls are mandatory, and are they available in the chosen tenant and plan? Microsoft’s external-tenant feature comparison marks Entra ID Protection as unavailable there. Check the current feature table and your precise control requirements; this limitation does not establish that every security requirement is unmet.
Migration and operations How will accounts, identifiers, credentials, applications, consent, support, hosting, and cutover be handled? Microsoft recommends mapping legacy CIAM features and inventorying the existing implementation. The available documentation does not establish a turnkey migration to Logto.
Cost What are expected active users, required add-ons, contract terms, hosting, support, and implementation costs? Microsoft publishes an MAU-based core offer and optional add-ons; Logto describes enterprise Cloud pricing as contract-based. These terms do not establish a universal lower-cost option.

Connect Logto to Microsoft Entra with OIDC

Logto’s Microsoft Entra OIDC guide has an administrator register a web application in the Microsoft Entra admin center, then add the redirect URI provided by Logto. The connector configuration uses the Entra client ID, client secret, and issuer. Logto says it discovers OIDC endpoints from the issuer and includes the openid, profile, and email scopes by default; additional scopes can be added.

  1. In Logto, open the Microsoft Entra OIDC connector setup and copy its redirect URI.
  2. In the Microsoft Entra admin center, create a web app registration and enter that URI as the redirect URI.
  3. Copy the app’s client ID and create a client secret. Enter the client ID, secret, and issuer in the Logto connector.
  4. Set the appropriate organization email domain if users should be routed to this connector. Test the routing and fallback behavior before enforcing it.
  5. For Microsoft API access, separately configure the required API permissions and scopes, consent, and Logto token storage. Logto’s guide specifies offline_access when refresh tokens are needed.

Authentication and Microsoft API authorization are separate decisions. A successful Entra sign-in does not, by itself, authorize the application to call Microsoft Graph or other APIs.

Connect Logto to Entra with SAML

For SAML, Logto’s guide has the administrator create a Microsoft Entra enterprise application configured for SAML. Logto supplies the service-provider Audience URI (entity ID) and Assertion Consumer Service (ACS) URL; the Entra federation metadata URL can then be supplied to Logto.

  1. Create the enterprise application in Entra and select its SAML single sign-on configuration.
  2. Enter the Audience URI/entity ID and ACS URL from the Logto connector in Entra.
  3. Provide the Entra federation metadata URL to Logto and configure the SAML identity, email, and name claims that the application expects.
  4. Assign the intended users or groups to the Entra enterprise application.
  5. If using signed requests, configure the certificate and signing settings in the sequence described by the connector guidance, then verify that Entra’s signature requirement is met.

Do not treat a successful configuration screen as proof that the production flow is ready. Test the actual sign-in initiation path, assigned and unassigned users, claim values, and certificate behavior for the relevant tenant.

Plan domain routing, account linking, and recovery

Logto documents enterprise connectors as client-specific: separate customer organizations using the same identity vendor still use separate connectors, which isolates configuration, employee management, and permissions. A configured email domain can route a user to its matching connector. Logto also says that a new SSO identity creates an account, while a matching working email can link the identity to an existing account.

  • Test domain routing with every customer domain and expected sign-in entry point.
  • Check that SAML claims map to the correct identity, email, and name fields, and that Entra application assignments match the intended user population.
  • Test existing accounts with matching email addresses as well as first-time SSO users.
  • Decide how users recover access if enterprise SSO is unavailable or their domain configuration changes. Logto notes that domain association can make SSO the only sign-in method for those users, so do not enforce a domain until the recovery plan is tested.

Check Entra External ID tenant capabilities before choosing

Microsoft’s supported-features comparison distinguishes workforce tenant configuration from external tenant configuration. It lists OIDC, authorization code, and authorization code with PKCE for external tenants, while other methods and controls differ by tenant type. In particular, the comparison marks Entra ID Protection unavailable in external tenants. Review the live feature comparison against each required flow and security control; do not infer that all workforce-tenant features are available to customer identities.

Microsoft’s planning guidance describes an external tenant as a separate resource for customer identities and apps. Its sequence is to create the external tenant, choose an authentication approach, register the application, integrate a sign-in flow, secure sign-in, and customize the experience. Microsoft says Azure AD B2C stopped being available for purchase by new customers on May 1, 2025; that date is not a shutdown announcement for existing customer tenants.

Make migration an inventory and cutover project

Microsoft recommends mapping legacy CIAM features to External ID capabilities and inventorying the existing implementation. Apply the same discipline before a move to Logto or a hybrid design: the available documentation does not establish an automated account-migration path or a standard migration duration.

Compare cost using your own usage and operating model

Microsoft’s External ID FAQ, accessed October 7, 2026, states that the core offering is free for the first 50,000 monthly active users (MAU); the same FAQ says add-ons do not have a free tier. Microsoft documents MAU billing and optional premium add-ons, and an Azure subscription is required for billing. Confirm the live pricing and applicable add-ons for your region and configuration before budgeting.

Logto’s billing documentation describes enterprise Cloud pricing as contract-based. Self-service additions and usage beyond contracted quota are subject to applicable Pro-plan or contract terms. No comparable usage scenario or Logto enterprise contract rate is established here, so neither option can be called universally cheaper.

Build the comparison around projected active users, required features and add-ons, contract terms, hosting choice, support, maintenance, and implementation effort. Include the engineering and operational work of account linking, migration, customer-specific connectors, and ongoing sign-in support rather than comparing only a headline allowance.
