Logo maker or designer: what’s the practical difference?
A logo maker is a do-it-yourself tool: you select and adjust available design elements yourself. It can suit a business that needs a basic mark and is comfortable working within the tool’s options. Check which files and rights come with the plan you intend to buy.

A designer engagement can involve custom concept development, discussion, and revisions. The scope varies, so agree on what the designer will create, how feedback works, and what files and rights you will receive. A single logo and a broader visual identity are different projects; specify if you need supporting assets or application rules as well as the mark.

Compare the parts of the decision that affect your business
| Decision factor | Logo maker | Graphic designer |
|---|---|---|
| Budget and scope | Compare the plan’s total price with its included features, files, and rights. | Compare the fee with the agreed concepts, revision rounds, formats, and rights. There is no established market-wide designer price in the cited sources. |
| Customization and collaboration | You select and edit from the tool’s available options. | You can define custom concepts and client feedback in the brief and agreement. |
| File handoff | Check that the plan includes the formats you need for your uses and future editing. | Specify the file formats in advance. A typical professional handoff may include editable vector source files, often Adobe Illustrator files, EPS files for print and web, and preview images, according to 99designs; confirm the actual package. |
| Rights and distinctiveness | Read the terms for permitted use and whether design elements are shared or non-exclusive. | Put rights transfer and permission to modify the work in the contract; do not assume copyright transfers automatically. |
| Trademark risk | Commercial-use permission does not establish uniqueness or trademark availability. | A custom commission is not, by itself, a trademark clearance search or guarantee of registrability. |
When a logo maker is a good fit
- You need a basic mark and are comfortable making the design choices yourself.
- The available design elements fit your needs without a custom concept process.
- You have checked that the paid plan includes the files and usage rights you need.
For example, Wix says purchased logos carry full commercial rights, but it cannot guarantee uniqueness or trademark registrability. Its terms also state that underlying icons, fonts, colors, and other elements are non-exclusive. Read Wix’s ownership and trademark guidance and its Logo Terms of Use before relying on the service for a brand identifier.
#1 Best Overall
When hiring a designer makes more sense
- You want custom concepts, discussion, and feedback-driven refinement.
- You need a handoff planned for different contexts, such as web and print.
- Your project includes more than a standalone logo, such as a broader identity and rules for using it.
Write down the deliverables before work starts. Specify the number of concepts, revision rounds, approval steps, required variants, file formats, schedule, budget, and rights. 99designs describes editable vector source files, EPS files, and preview images as typical handoff items, but a particular contract or package may differ. It also says copyright transfers to the contest winner’s client during handover; that is specific to its service, not a universal rule for design commissions. Read the terms for your own engagement.
What does professional logo design cost?
One vendor-specific comparison point is 99designs’ published logo contest pricing: US$249, US$399, US$799, and US$1,050, excluding sales tax, on its pricing page. These are contest package prices, not an average or typical fee for freelance designers or agencies. Compare what a package includes with the scope you need, and check the vendor page for current prices before purchasing.
Rank #2
Can you trademark a logo made with a logo maker?
A logo maker’s commercial-use permission is not a promise that a mark is unique or can be registered. Wix, for example, explicitly makes that distinction for its own service. Whether a logo can serve as a trademark depends on the mark and its use; the tool or the fact that a designer created it does not settle the question.

For U.S. federal trademark applications, the USPTO advises searching similar wording and designs in relation to the relevant goods and services. Its federal search guidance recommends a clearance search before applying. A more comprehensive review can also consider state records and internet references, as explained in the USPTO’s comprehensive clearance guidance. Consider qualified trademark counsel when the logo will be a major commercial identifier or significant spending depends on it. This guidance is U.S.-specific, not individualized legal advice.
Copyright and trademark are also different protections. Copyright may protect sufficiently creative artwork; trademark law concerns identifying commercial source and the likelihood of confusion. One does not establish the other. The U.S. Copyright Office explains the distinction in its copyright FAQ and Compendium.
Quick Recap
A short decision guide
- Choose a logo maker if you want to do the work yourself, need a basic mark, and have confirmed the plan’s terms and files fit its intended uses.
- Hire a designer if you need custom concepts, a feedback process, or a handoff package for varied uses. Put the scope, deliverables, rights, and approval process in writing.
- Pause for clearance if the logo will carry substantial commercial importance. Search for similar marks in relevant goods and services, and consider a comprehensive review before committing to a rollout.
