When a Logitech mouse stops working on a Mac, it can feel like the Mac is broken. In reality, most failures come down to power, connection, or a macOS/device state that looks like a “dead mouse.”
Yes, there’s an embarrassing reason that comes up constantly: the mouse is off (or not receiving power). The good news is you can confirm it in under a minute, then move on to the right fix if it isn’t that.

Why Logitech mice stop working on Macs
Logitech mice usually connect to macOS in one of two ways: Bluetooth or a Logitech Unifying USB receiver. When they stop working, the cause typically falls into one of these buckets: power failure, lost pairing, receiver/USB issues, or a macOS setting that prevents input from registering.

The embarrassing reason: the mouse is actually off (or batteries aren’t making contact)
Some Logitech mice have a physical power switch. Other models silently fail when batteries are installed incorrectly or the battery contacts aren’t seating fully. On camera, this looks like a software issue. In practice, it’s usually power.
What to check
- Power switch: Flip it to the ON position. Move it back and forth once to “wake” the connection.
- Batteries: If you use AA/AAA or coin cells, remove them and reinstall them. Make sure you’re matching polarity (+/-) exactly as printed inside the compartment.
- Battery door latch: Close the compartment firmly. A partially latched cover can interrupt contact.
- Charging models: Confirm the charging cable is seated and the LED (if your model has one) shows charging.
If you see the mouse wake up (LED turns on, wheel briefly lights, or the pointer starts moving), you’ve found the culprit. If not, continue with triage.
Quick triage (5 minutes) before changing settings
Do these checks first to avoid chasing the wrong problem.
- Try a different surface: Move the mouse to a plain surface (not glass, not a highly reflective desk mat). If the sensor is confused, the pointer may not move.
- Clean the sensor: Use a dry microfiber cloth around the optical window. If you have compressed air, give a short burst to clear dust.
- Power cycle: Turn the mouse off and on again (or pull/reinsert batteries).
- Test another USB port: If you use a receiver, plug it into a different port (prefer a direct port on the Mac, not a hub).
- Restart the Mac: A quick reboot can clear stuck Bluetooth input states.
If the mouse still doesn’t respond, pick the fix that matches how it’s connected.
Fix 1: Reconnect a Bluetooth Logitech mouse on macOS
If your Logitech mouse uses Bluetooth, macOS may have lost pairing or the device may be “connected” but not actually transmitting input.
Re-pair the mouse in macOS Settings
- Open System Settings on your Mac.
- Go to Bluetooth.
- Find your Logitech mouse in the device list.
- Click Remove (or Forget This Device), then confirm.
- Turn the mouse into pairing mode (usually holding the Bluetooth button for several seconds until the LED blinks).
- On the Mac, under Bluetooth, select the mouse name and click Connect.
Check it’s the right connection (not “paired but not used”)
On macOS, a device can appear in the Bluetooth list yet not behave. Remove and reconnect forces a fresh link.
Reset Bluetooth without reinstalling macOS
If Bluetooth is glitchy, try: toggle Bluetooth off and back on in System Settings > Bluetooth, then reconnect the mouse. If you recently upgraded to a newer macOS version, this can matter because Bluetooth stack behavior can change after updates.

Fix 2: Fix a Logitech Unifying USB receiver setup
Unifying uses a single USB dongle that can be paired with multiple Logitech devices. If the receiver isn’t recognized or the mouse got paired to a different dongle, you’ll get a “dead” mouse effect.
Confirm the receiver is detected
- Unplug the receiver.
- Wait 10 seconds.
- Plug it back into a known-good USB port.
- Open System Settings > Bluetooth (ignore Bluetooth devices here; you’re just checking general system health) and then open System Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control only if you suspect input settings.
For receiver detection details, macOS typically shows it under System Information. If you need that path: open System Settings, then search for System Information, and check under USB.
Re-pair using Logitech Unifying software (and a crucial compatibility note)
Logitech’s Unifying pairing tool is commonly handled via Logitech’s software. The practical approach: install Logitech’s official receiver software when your model supports it, then re-pair the mouse to the receiver.
Because software versions and macOS compatibility vary, rely on the official Logitech download page for your exact mouse and receiver. If you can’t install the Unifying tool on your current macOS version, the “pair by powering down and re-entering pairing mode” method still works in many cases—especially if the mouse supports Unifying pairing via its button.

Fix 3: Check power, battery type, and USB port behavior
Power problems are the #1 cause of “it was working and now it isn’t.” With rechargeable mice, battery management can look like a flaky connection. With disposable cells, weak or improperly inserted batteries do the same.
Battery best practices that actually prevent failures
- Use known-good cells: If you’re using AA/AAA, swap to fresh batteries. Avoid “it might still work” batteries.
- Don’t mix battery chemistries: If the mouse expects alkaline, don’t assume rechargeable NiMH behavior matches it every time.
- Try a charger cable swap: For USB-chargeable Logitech models, test a different certified cable. Some cables charge but don’t negotiate data/connection behavior cleanly.
USB port gotchas
Unifying receivers can fail on certain hubs or front-panel ports. Plug the receiver directly into the Mac. If you use a dock, test with the dock disconnected. If your Mac is a USB-C model, also try a different USB-C port (on the same Mac) so you can rule out a single port issue.
Fix 4: Remove common macOS blockers (Sleep, accessibility, scroll/gesture)
Sometimes the mouse is fine, but macOS isn’t listening the way you expect.

Prevent mouse and Bluetooth from entering odd states
- Open System Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth.
- If you see any setting related to standby or device behavior, toggle it off/on and test the mouse immediately after.
If the pointer freezes shortly after the Mac sleeps, re-pairing and battery replacement are often the real fix. Bluetooth can also “stick” after wake if the mouse battery is low.

Go to System Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control and ensure settings like tracking speed aren’t pushed to extremes. This won’t usually cause total failure, but it can make the cursor appear “stuck” on high-sensitivity settings.
Fix 5: Update macOS + Logitech software (Options / firmware)
Logitech supports many mice with software that can manage settings, pairing, and device behavior. macOS updates can change Bluetooth and input behaviors, so version mismatches sometimes show up as “mouse stopped working.”
Update macOS
- Open System Settings.
- Go to General > Software Update.
- Install the latest update available, then reboot.
After updating to a new macOS release (for example, moving from macOS Sonoma to a later point release), re-test the mouse before you install additional utilities.
Install or update Logitech Options (when your mouse supports it)
If your mouse model supports Logitech Options on macOS, updating Options can fix device configuration drift. Logitech Options is also where you might change device behavior profiles across devices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWatch for the common mistake: switching device profiles but expecting the old behavior. If your mouse has multiple device profiles (typically via a button), switch profiles back and test movement.
Model-specific gotchas (common Logitech mouse behaviors)
Logitech models differ. A single “mouse stopped” complaint can be caused by a totally different switch/button behavior depending on the model.

- Ambidextrous Design: The mouse has a design that works equally well for both left and right-handed users.
- High-Precision Tracking: The mouse has a laser sensor that provides precise tracking and control.
- Ergonomic Design: The mouse has a contoured shape that is comfortable to use for extended periods.
Multiple-device switching (often causes the “wrong Mac” problem)
Many Logitech Bluetooth mice support channel switching (commonly with buttons labeled 1/2/3). If your mouse is set to channel 2, it may be connected to another device or waiting for pairing on a different channel.
- Confirm which channel is active on the mouse.
- In System Settings > Bluetooth, ensure the mouse is connected for that channel.
- Switch channels and reconnect if needed.
“Smart sleep” modes and inactivity
Some Logitech mice aggressively sleep to save power. If the sensor doesn’t wake reliably, you can see delayed cursor movement that feels like failure. Replace weak batteries and test again.
Scroll wheel modes
Some wheels support free-spin and click-to-click modes. If you accidentally changed mode, it might look like tracking failure. Toggle the wheel mode button (if your model has one) and test scrolling and pointer movement.
When one mouse works on one Mac but not another
This scenario strongly suggests a macOS-device pairing issue or receiver compatibility issue, not a dead mouse.
Bluetooth scenario
- On the “working” Mac, remove the mouse from Bluetooth pairing and re-pair on the “non-working” Mac.
- If the mouse uses multiple channels, ensure the channel button matches the device you’re trying to use.
Unifying scenario
- Try the receiver on the working Mac (if possible) to confirm the dongle itself isn’t defective.
- Then try a different USB port on the non-working Mac.
Common mistakes that waste time
- Skipping the power switch / battery check. It feels too obvious, so people skip it—and lose 30 minutes chasing software.
- Pairing to the wrong channel/device. If the mouse supports 1/2/3, macOS will happily connect the “other” identity.
- Testing only one surface. Optical sensors can misread on glossy or patterned surfaces.
- Using a hub to test. A flaky hub looks like a mouse issue.
Troubleshooting checklist when nothing works
Use this in order. Stop once the pointer works.
- Flip the mouse power switch (or reinstall batteries).
- Charge the mouse fully (if rechargeable) and retest.
- Test on a different surface and clean the sensor window.
- Restart the Mac.
- If Bluetooth: remove device in System Settings > Bluetooth and re-pair.
- If Unifying: try a different USB port, then confirm the receiver is detected in System Information > USB.
- Update macOS, reboot, then test again.
- Update Logitech Options (if supported) and check the active profile/channel.
If you reach the end and the mouse still doesn’t respond, test the mouse on another Mac (or test another known-good Logitech mouse on your Mac). This isolates whether the fault is hardware or software.
Alternatives if the mouse remains unreliable
If your Logitech mouse keeps failing due to hardware wear (common with worn battery contacts or damaged receiver cables), consider practical alternatives while you troubleshoot or warranty the device.
- Use a different connection method: If compatible, switch from Bluetooth to Unifying (or vice versa) to isolate Bluetooth stack vs receiver issues.
- Replace the receiver: If the Unifying dongle is the problem, a new receiver solves it faster than reinstalling macOS.
- Use a wired mouse temporarily: A wired replacement confirms your Mac input stack is healthy.
FAQs
My Logitech Bluetooth mouse shows as connected, but the cursor doesn’t move. What now?
Remove the mouse from System Settings > Bluetooth and re-pair. Then replace batteries or fully charge. Low battery often causes “connected but non-responsive” behavior after wake.

Unifying receiver works sometimes, then stops. Is it the mouse or the Mac?
Most “sometimes” failures are power or USB path issues. Try a different USB port (direct on the Mac), avoid hubs, and replace batteries. If it fails on all ports and with fresh cells, test the receiver on a different Mac.
Does macOS need Logitech Options for a Logitech mouse to work?
No. A Logitech mouse should work with basic cursor input without Options. Options mainly manages advanced features, profiles, and some device behavior configurations.
Can interference break Logitech mouse input on macOS?
Yes. Dense 2.4 GHz environments can impact some wireless behavior, especially when using crowded USB dongles or near heavy RF noise. Moving the receiver closer (or changing ports) and reducing interference can help.
Why does my mouse freeze right after the Mac wakes from sleep?
That often points to low battery or a Bluetooth state mismatch. Charge/replace batteries first, then re-pair the mouse. Updating macOS to the latest point release can also help with Bluetooth wake behavior.
Bottom Line
The quickest fix for a Logitech mouse that stops working on a Mac is embarrassingly simple: confirm it’s actually on and getting power. If it’s not, macOS can’t fix a dead signal.
If power is fine, follow the connection-specific path: re-pair Bluetooth via System Settings > Bluetooth, or move the Unifying receiver to a known-good USB port and re-pair with Logitech’s tools if needed.
