The Logitech G309 LIGHTSPEED is a mid-range wireless gaming mouse that gives you a choice between a fast 2.4 GHz LIGHTSPEED connection and Bluetooth, plus a replaceable AA battery. Its main trade-off is weight: it is listed at 86 g with the battery, or 68 g when paired with Logitech’s separately sold POWERPLAY charging system and used without an AA. That makes it versatile, but its 1 kHz maximum LIGHTSPEED report rate and the extra cost of the lighter setup matter if you are choosing it primarily for competitive FPS play.
What the G309 offers
Logitech lists the G309 (model MR0109) as a wireless mouse with LIGHTSPEED and Bluetooth LE connectivity, six programmable buttons, a HERO 25K sensor and LIGHTFORCE hybrid optical-mechanical switches. Its stated sensitivity range is 100–25,600 DPI, with tracking speed above 400 IPS and zero smoothing, acceleration or filtering. These are manufacturer specifications; they describe capabilities, not how the mouse will feel in every game or hand.

The design is a mid-range, symmetrical, egg-like shape. RTINGS describes it as similar to the G305, but with a more pronounced rear hump and flatter sides. Shape and grip comfort are personal, so those observations are useful as a point of comparison rather than a guarantee of fit.

The two connection modes are not equivalent for gaming. Logitech Support specifies 1 kHz (1 ms) in LIGHTSPEED high mode, 125 Hz (8 ms) in LIGHTSPEED low mode, and 125 Hz (8 ms) over Bluetooth. Use LIGHTSPEED high mode when responsiveness is the priority; Bluetooth is a convenient option for another device or less demanding use, but it reports less frequently.
#1 Best Overall
- Max Play: Switch between the robust yet low latency LIGHTSPEED wireless and Bluetooth connectivity on this wireless gaming mouse for total wireless flexibility
- Min Weight: Logitech G309 LIGHTSPEED is a lightweight gaming mouse that weighs just 86 g with the included AA battery or 68 g (battery-free) with use of POWERPLAY wireless charging system
- Max Precision: HERO 25K sensor on this wireless gaming mouse tracks exactly to the sub-micron with zero smoothing for precise wireless gaming
- Min Charging: 300+ hours with AA battery or unlimited battery life with POWERPLAY, so you can focus on the game, not your battery life
- Max Speed: LIGHTFORCE optical-mechanical switches with optical speed, mechanical feel, and optimized gaming performance
The 1 kHz ceiling is a consideration for buyers seeking the highest polling rates available in competitive gaming mice. TechRadar flags it as a possible limitation for some FPS players, and RTINGS notes lighter alternatives with higher polling rates. That does not make the G309 unsuitable for FPS games: it means its maximum report rate should be weighed alongside shape, weight, connection needs and cost rather than treated as the only measure of performance.
Battery life and the weight choices
The G309 uses one replaceable AA battery by default. Logitech’s stated weights are 86 g with an AA and 68 g with POWERPLAY and no AA. POWERPLAY is a separately sold wireless charging system, not an accessory included with the mouse, so reaching the lighter configuration requires additional spending as well as compatible desk hardware.

Logitech claims over 300 hours from one AA alkaline battery in LIGHTSPEED at a 1 ms report rate, and over 600 hours in Bluetooth. These are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed results; actual runtime depends on use and conditions. TechRadar’s reviewer reported about a 5% battery decline after nearly a week of using both modes, but that is one reviewer’s experience, not a controlled runtime test or a prediction for every owner.
How it feels in use
Reviewer impressions are generally positive about tracking and clicks, with some ergonomic caveats. TechRadar describes smooth, precise gliding and responsive LIGHTSPEED use. Tom’s Hardware found the primary switches crisp and clicky, but reported a somewhat stiff scroll wheel and slippery sides; that outlet said the included grip tape helped. These are specific reviewers’ impressions, so try to assess the shape and surface for your grip style if possible.

- The next-generation optical HERO sensor delivers incredible performance and up to 10x the power efficiency over previous generations, with 400 IPS precision and up to 12,000 DPI sensitivity
- Ultra-fast LIGHTSPEED wireless technology gives you a lag-free gaming experience, delivering incredible responsiveness and reliability with 1 ms report rate for competition-level performance
- G305 wireless mouse boasts an incredible 250 hours of continuous gameplay on just 1 AA battery; switch to Endurance mode via Logitech G HUB software and extend battery life up to 9 months
- Wireless does not have to mean heavy, G305 lightweight mouse provides high maneuverability coming in at only 3.4 oz thanks to efficient lightweight mechanical design and ultra-efficient battery usage
- The durable, compact design with built-in nano receiver storage makes G305 not just a great portable desktop mouse, but also a great laptop travel companion, use with a gaming laptop and play anywhere
Tom’s Hardware measured its review unit at about 85.6 g with an AA and 66.5 g with a POWERPLAY puck. Those measurements differ slightly from Logitech’s listed 86 g and 68 g; they are review-unit measurements, not a replacement for the manufacturer’s specifications.
G309 vs. G305
The G305 is the closest comparison for shoppers considering Logitech’s AA-powered wireless gaming mice. RTINGS says both use an AA battery, while the G309 adds Bluetooth and POWERPLAY support. Its comparison also characterizes the G309 as lighter, with a newer sensor and optical switches. The right choice depends on whether those updates and connectivity options justify the price difference for you.

| Decision point | G309 LIGHTSPEED | G305 |
|---|---|---|
| Battery | One AA by default; can operate without the AA with POWERPLAY | AA-powered, according to RTINGS |
| Wireless modes | LIGHTSPEED and Bluetooth LE | RTINGS says it lacks the G309’s Bluetooth support |
| POWERPLAY support | Supported; the system is sold separately | RTINGS says it lacks POWERPLAY support |
| Sensor and switches | HERO 25K sensor and LIGHTFORCE hybrid switches, per Logitech | RTINGS describes the G309 as having a newer sensor and optical switches; these specifications are not detailed here |
| Shape | Egg-like symmetrical shape with a pronounced rear hump and flatter sides, per RTINGS | RTINGS describes it as similar in shape to the G309 |
| Polling/report rate | Up to 1 kHz in LIGHTSPEED high mode; 125 Hz in Bluetooth or LIGHTSPEED low mode | not stated in the cited comparison |
| Price | Logitech’s July 2024 launch suggested U.S. retail price was $79.99; current pricing varies | not stated in the cited comparison |
For a current buying decision, check local prices rather than treating the G309’s launch MSRP as today’s price. If you are comparing total setup cost, include POWERPLAY only if you want the 68 g battery-free configuration.
Is the G309 worth it?
The G309 makes the most sense if you want one mouse that can switch between LIGHTSPEED and Bluetooth, prefer replaceable AA power, and value the option of a POWERPLAY-based lighter setup. It is less compelling if your first priority is the lightest possible mouse or a polling rate above 1 kHz, or if adding POWERPLAY undermines your budget. The G305 remains worth comparing if Bluetooth and POWERPLAY are not important to you; shape and current street price can decide between them.
