Lock Down Chrome’s Privacy Settings Without Breaking the Web

Use Chrome’s built-in controls to limit third-party cookie access, review site permissions, and understand Safe Browsing’s security and privacy tradeoffs.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Chrome’s privacy controls can limit third-party cookie access, restrict what sites can do, and give you a choice about how much browsing-related information is shared for threat checks. They do not make you anonymous or stop a website from processing information you choose to send it. The steps below focus on Chrome for desktop; menus and available controls can vary by version, operating system, account, and administrator policy.

Block third-party cookies, then make exceptions only when needed

Third-party cookies can let content embedded in one site access cookie data associated with another. Blocking them can reduce that cross-site access, but may interfere with embedded sign-ins, media, or other features that depend on cookies.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Open Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies.
  2. Select Block third-party cookies.
  3. If a trusted site feature stops working, use the site exception controls on that page to allow cookies for that site rather than restoring access globally.

Google says a regular browsing exception remains for 90 days or until you turn it off; an allowance made in Incognito lasts for that session. Chrome’s interface and the ability to change settings can differ on work- or school-managed devices. See Google’s third-party cookie and site data help.

Clear cookies separately when you want to remove stored site data

Blocking cookies controls access going forward; deleting them removes stored data. In Chrome’s Delete browsing data flow, choose a time range and clear cookies if that is what you intend. This may sign you out of sites or remove saved preferences. To delete data for one site, use Third-party cookies → See all site data and permissions and remove the relevant site’s data.

Review site permissions by category

Sites can request access to capabilities and content such as location, camera, microphone, notifications, pop-ups and redirects, intrusive ads, embedded content, and local network access. Set a sensible default, then grant access only to sites and tasks that need it.

  1. Open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings.
  2. Choose a permission category, such as Location, Camera, or Microphone.
  3. Set the default behavior, then inspect site-specific access and remove permissions you no longer want a site to have.
  4. Repeat for other categories, including notifications and pop-ups and redirects.

When a site feature fails, check that site’s permission entry before changing the global default. Google documents the available controls in Chrome site settings.

Choose a Safe Browsing level with the tradeoff in view

Safe Browsing checks for dangerous sites, downloads, and extensions. Google documents three desktop choices. Standard Protection is the stated default on its desktop help page; Enhanced Protection adds checks and sends more browsing-related information to Google. No protection removes those checks, so it is not a sensible privacy shortcut for most people.

Setting What Google says it does Privacy and security tradeoff
Standard Protection Checks against known dangerous sites, downloads, and extensions. Google says its ordinary URL checks use privacy servers to obscure part of URLs; when a site behaves suspiciously, it may send full URLs and bits of page content. Baseline threat checks with the described limits on information sent during ordinary checks.
Enhanced Protection Can warn about threats Google has not already identified. It sends URLs and a small sample of page content, extension activity, and system information to Google Safe Browsing. More threat checking, with more browsing-related data sent to Google.
No protection Turns Safe Browsing protection off. Reduces this data flow, but also removes protection against harmful sites, downloads, and extensions.

To review the choice, open Settings → Privacy and security → Security and select the Safe Browsing level that fits your priorities. Google explains its stated data handling in Chrome Safe Browsing protection levels and how Safe Browsing works in Chrome.

Treat Do Not Track as a request, not a blocker

Chrome can send a Do Not Track request, but each website decides how to respond. Google says most websites and services, including Google’s, do not change their behavior in response. Turning it on therefore does not reliably stop tracking. The setting is under Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies; Google describes its effect in Chrome’s Do Not Track help.

Use Incognito for local privacy, not anonymity

Incognito can help keep browsing private from other people who use the same device, and Chrome blocks third-party cookies in Incognito by default. It does not make you anonymous or prevent websites from processing information you provide. Google’s explanation is in Understand privacy in Chrome and its cookie help.

Computer Privacy Screen Filter for 24 Inch 16:9 Aspect Ratio Monitor
  • Privacy Screen Filter Size: If the visible area of your display has the following dimension: Width x Height (Exclude Frame/Arrow 1 to 3 mm errors): 20 15/16" x 11 13/16" (532 mm x 299 mm), then this filter is good for you. Very Important to double check your screen's Width and Height excluding frame before ordering. It's not recommended to make your selection based solely on your screen's diagonal size
  • Left and Right Privacy: Not block visibility directly behind you, regardless of distance. The privacy filter makes the screen appear dark when looking at it from an angle (left and right 30 to 180 degree), but clear when looking directly at it. To change the privacy levels, simply adjust your monitor's brightness level accordingly
  • Matte and Glossy Sides: It's a reversible privacy screen filter, giving you the flexibility to choose glossy or matte finish. The matte side will have less glare, however the glossy side will have stronger privacy
  • Perfect for Open Workspaces: Ensure your working space is bright and well lit. Privacy screens do not work in dimly lit areas
  • Two Installation Option: Option 1 uses clear double side adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to take out the privacy screen filter easily as needed

Enable secure-connection warnings

The Always use secure connections option prompts before Chrome connects to a site without HTTPS; Chrome displays a warning if a site does not support HTTPS. Find it under Settings → Privacy and security → Security. HTTPS encrypts the connection between the browser and site, but it does not prevent the site from processing information you submit. Check the site name carefully and do not enter sensitive information on a site Chrome flags as not secure or dangerous. See Google’s secure-connection help.

Apply the controls without creating unnecessary breakage

  • Start with third-party cookie blocking and site-permission defaults, then add only the narrow exceptions required for features you actually use.
  • If something stops working, troubleshoot the affected site’s cookie exception and permissions instead of loosening settings across Chrome.
  • Prefer deleting selected site data when one site is the problem; clearing all cookies can sign you out elsewhere and remove preferences.
  • Choose Safe Browsing based on the security-versus-data-sharing tradeoff, rather than disabling it as a general privacy measure.

These controls address particular kinds of access and data handling; they are not a guarantee that Chrome or websites will collect no information. Google’s own framing is that “privacy is a personal choice and not one size fits all,” in its Chrome privacy overview.
