An AI-assisted local crawler can help turn a website audit into a repeatable workflow, but its findings are only as reliable as its crawl scope, evidence, and human review. For client work, separate what the crawler actually observes from what an AI recommends, respect the target site’s access rules, and treat automated accessibility results as a starting point—not proof of accessibility.
How do I audit a website locally?
Start by defining the target and the questions the audit should answer. “Local” can mean a development server running on your machine, a local file, or a staging site that is not publicly available. Those targets are not interchangeable: a crawler must be able to reach the environment, and the report should identify exactly which one it examined.

A useful reference is Lighthouse in Chrome DevTools. Its documentation describes audits for accessibility, SEO, best practices, and agentic browsing, and says its agent workflow can evaluate pages visible in Chrome, including local development servers and local files. This documents Lighthouse’s workflow; it does not establish that the crawler in this article uses Lighthouse or provides the same features. See Chrome for Developers’ Lighthouse documentation.
Define scope before crawling
- Record the starting URL or local environment, including protocol, hostname, and port where relevant.
- Decide which page types and paths are in scope, and identify pages the client has not authorized you to inspect.
- Set a request rate and crawl boundary appropriate to the site. Do not assume an automated crawler has permission to access authenticated, private, or sensitive areas.
- Record the crawler identity and how it interprets robots.txt. Different crawlers can behave differently; Google’s documented behavior is specific to Google.
- Keep the run’s timestamp and environment in its report so a later change can be distinguished from a different target or configuration.
Collect evidence before asking AI to interpret it
For each finding, preserve the affected URL and the observable evidence: for example, an HTTP response, a page element, a missing attribute, or a failed navigation. Then ask an AI system to explain likely impact or propose a remediation. Keep the observation and the generated interpretation separate. A suggested fix is not evidence that the issue exists, and applying a fix is not evidence that it worked; rerun the relevant check and verify the result.

What should a website crawler check?
Choose checks to match the audit’s purpose rather than treating a large count of findings as a quality score. Lighthouse’s documented categories are a useful way to organize checks, but a client report should state which checks were actually run and what they can establish.
| Audit area | Useful evidence to capture | What the result does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Technical SEO | Page reachability, crawl paths, response status, sitemap references, and robots.txt behavior for the crawler being used. | That every search engine or AI service will crawl or index the site in the same way. |
| Accessibility | Automatically detectable issues such as missing or invalid properties, plus the affected page or element. | Complete accessibility, WCAG conformance, or a usable experience for every person. |
| Best practices | Specific browser or page conditions checked by the selected audit tool. | That the site is secure, reliable, or correct in every context beyond the checks performed. |
| Agent interaction | Whether an agent can find and interpret controls and their accessible names, roles, and states in the tested environment. | That all AI agents can operate the site or that the site will appear in AI-generated answers. |
Check robots.txt in context
robots.txt is not a universal permission system. Google says its rules apply only to the host, protocol, and port where the file is hosted, so an audit should retain those details and say whose crawler interpretation it models. Google’s documentation also says Google’s crawlers download and parse the file before crawling; its handling of successful responses, redirects, client errors, and server errors is Google-specific, not a rule to assume for every crawler. Read Google’s robots.txt documentation.

- Used Book in Good Condition
Google Search crawling infrastructure enforces a robots.txt file-size limit of 500 kibibytes (KiB); content after that limit is ignored. This is a Google-specific technical limit, not a general limit for every crawler. The file belongs at the root of the relevant domain or subdomain for it to function. A check should therefore look beyond text patterns to the file’s location and server response.

Can I use AI to audit a client’s website?
Yes—as an assistant for organizing evidence, explaining likely implications, and drafting remediation options. It should not silently decide what the crawler observed, widen the authorized scope, or turn an uncertain result into a definitive claim. A practical report distinguishes four things: the observation, its location, the proposed change, and whether a person verified the fix.
- Observe: State what the crawler or browser found and include the relevant URL or element.
- Interpret: Label AI-generated explanations as recommendations, especially where the evidence admits more than one cause.
- Prioritize: Have a human assess user impact, business context, and confidence instead of sorting solely by an AI’s severity label.
- Verify: Recheck the affected page after a change and record whether the original condition is resolved.
Keep client boundaries explicit: authorization, request limits, exclusions, and treatment of authenticated or sensitive content should be settled before a run. A local environment can reduce exposure to the public internet, but the word “local” alone does not establish that data is private or that a particular workflow is secure.

Does an automated accessibility scan prove a site is accessible?
No. Automated scans can find some common issues, but they cannot discover every accessibility problem. Playwright’s documentation recommends combining automated checks with manual assessment and inclusive user testing. It also documents integrating axe-core scans into browser tests for automatically detectable violations. A clean scan means only that the selected automated checks did not report those detectable violations in the tested pages and conditions—not that the site is fully accessible or legally compliant. See Playwright’s accessibility testing guidance.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse automation to focus human review, not replace it. Review flows that depend on keyboard interaction, understandable focus order, meaningful announcements, and task completion; involve people with varied access needs when the work and context warrant it. Report both the automated coverage and the parts that still require human evaluation.

How should an audit cover AI search and agent interaction?
These are separate questions. Content discovery concerns whether a service’s crawler can access material; interaction concerns whether an agent can identify and operate controls. OpenAI’s publisher and developer FAQ says publishers who want content discovery in ChatGPT search should avoid blocking OAI-SearchBot. Separately, it says accessible roles, labels, and states help ChatGPT Atlas understand interactive elements. This is OpenAI’s published guidance, not a guarantee of visibility, ranking, or successful interaction across AI services. See OpenAI’s Publishers and Developers FAQ.
What makes a crawler audit useful to a client?
A useful audit lets someone reproduce and assess each important finding. Give every item a location, evidence, a plain-language explanation, and a clear next action. Identify the tool or crawler identity, target environment, and time of the run; distinguish automated observations from human judgments and AI-generated suggestions. Once a fix is made, verify it against the same condition rather than treating the recommendation itself as completion.
That approach keeps the crawler in its proper role: it can make repetitive checks faster and help surface patterns, while people remain responsible for authorization, interpretation, prioritization, accessibility judgment, and confirming that a change solves the underlying problem.
