Local Tipping Points in Dune Landscapes: How Does a Dune System Organize Itself?

Dune landscapes organize through feedback between grasses, windblown sand and neighboring vegetation patches. Their resilience can be uneven: a damaged local area may not recover even as dunes elsewhere continue to grow.

A dune landscape can remain resilient overall while a damaged patch fails to recover. Dune grasses trap windblown sand, and burial can stimulate further growth; across a landscape, neighboring patches reinforce that process. But the result is not necessarily a tidy pattern of equal-sized dunes: larger dunes can grow as smaller neighbors shrink or merge into them.

How sand and vegetation build a dune

In young coastal dunes, grasses such as marram act as ecosystem engineers. Their stems slow wind and capture airborne sand. When sand buries the plants, burial can encourage shoot production and expansion, adding vegetation that can trap more sediment. This plant–sand feedback helps a dune grow.

The basic mechanism is local, but its consequences need not stop at one clump of grass. A patch changes the way wind and sand move around it, while nearby patches can combine to capture sediment. The evolving landscape therefore depends not only on the size or vitality of individual plants, but also on where patches sit in relation to one another.

Why neighboring patches can change dune growth

A 2026 Nature Communications study analyzed 4,349 vegetation patches in an establishing coastal dune landscape, relating initial patch density to later dune development over 2013–2023. The authors found an S-shaped relationship: subsequent dune height changed with local patch density, with a fitted inflection point around 0.054 ± 0.003 patches per square metre during 2014–2023.

The authors interpret the nonlinear response as consistent with a percolation-like transition. In practical terms, nearby patches may become sufficiently connected to act together: their combined effect on wind and sediment capture can strengthen dune growth. The initial spatial arrangement of patches can therefore help explain later height, beyond what the size of any single patch would reveal.

The reported inflection is specific to the study site, the way neighborhoods were defined, and the model fit. It is not a universal density target, a general management threshold, or a measurement of how much grass damage a dune can withstand.

Two different kinds of tipping point

A density-related growth transition

The numerical value above describes an inflection in the relationship between initial local patch density and later dune height. It is evidence of a nonlinear growth response in the analyzed landscape, interpreted as consistent with greater functional connection among neighboring patches.

A local threshold for recovery after damage

A separate finding summarized by Utrecht University describes a different tipping point: beyond a critical amount of damage to the marram-grass pattern, the affected area does not recover locally, while sand is redistributed toward denser vegetated dunes elsewhere. The wider dune system may remain resilient even as the disturbed patch stays damaged. The university’s account gives no numerical value for this vegetation-damage threshold.

These findings concern related feedbacks, but their thresholds are not interchangeable. One is a measured, site-specific inflection in patch-density response; the other is a qualitative disturbance threshold for local recovery.

Why dunes do not form a regular grid

Patch interactions can produce coarsening rather than a stable array of equally sized dunes. Some vegetated dunes grow, while smaller neighbors are reduced, left behind, or absorbed as dunes merge. Utrecht University describes the observed size distribution, merging, and slowing rate of change as consistent with phase separation, a way of describing how regions with different characteristics can become more distinct over time.

That is an interpretation of the observed behavior, not proof that every dune landscape follows one universal law. As ecologist and study author Paul Berghuis put it, “There is no fixed size.”

How vegetated dunes differ from bare-sand dune fields

Vegetated coastal dunes require attention to plant vitality, vegetation density and arrangement, available sediment, wind-driven sand movement, and interactions among neighboring patches. In Baas’s DECAL model, vegetation effectiveness reduces the probability of erosion and increases the probability of deposition; simple local rules can generate vegetated dune forms and characteristic length scales. That is a model result, not a measurement of the 2026 patch-density inflection. Read the DECAL model paper in Geophysical Research Letters.

Bare-sand aeolian fields are a useful but distinct comparison. There, wind regime and sediment supply influence dune type and crest orientation; dune interactions help shape pattern ordering, and changing wind regimes can superimpose patterns. Those controls do not include the same plant-growth feedback that organizes vegetated coastal dunes. See the Geomorphology review of dune interactions.

What this means for understanding dune resilience

System-wide resilience should not be mistaken for guaranteed recovery at every location. If local vegetation damage passes the threshold described in Utrecht University’s account, sand may shift toward denser vegetated dunes rather than rebuilding the damaged patch. The practical implication is to assess local vegetation condition and spatial arrangement as well as the overall state of the dune area; the available account does not establish a numeric damage limit that can be applied as a field prescription.

The 2026 patch-density result adds a second reason to look beyond individual plants: neighboring patches can collectively influence later dune height. It provides a study-specific way to describe that nonlinear relationship, not a universal rule for where dunes should be planted or how densely they should be managed.

Utrecht University’s account of the local tipping-point research and the 2026 Nature Communications study describe complementary scales of organization: persistence or change within a damaged patch, and collective growth across neighboring patches.
