Neither local LLMs nor cloud APIs are always cheaper. Cloud APIs usually avoid an upfront hardware purchase and charge for usage; local inference trades many per-token fees for hardware, electricity and operating work. Local hosting can pay off when suitable hardware handles a steady, substantial workload. For occasional or unpredictable use, paying an API only when needed can cost less. The break-even point depends on the model quality your task requires, how much you use the system and the full cost of owning or operating it.
What a fair cost comparison includes
Compare systems that can do the same acceptable work—not just a cloud model against the cheapest local model, or one model with another that has a different quality level. Count successful, quality-acceptable tasks, not theoretical tokens alone. A cheaper model that needs more retries or human correction may not be cheaper in practice.

Start by describing a representative month of work. Include:
- Input and output tokens, counted separately, including system prompts, retrieved material and conversation history.
- The share of input tokens that qualifies for caching, and any cache-write charges.
- Typical context length, request frequency, concurrency, retries and background jobs.
- Required response quality, latency, availability, privacy and data-residency constraints.
Hidden and repeated prompt tokens can materially change an API bill. A public LLM cost calculator advises including these tokens; its results are estimates, not provider quotes.

How to calculate API cost
Calculate each price bucket separately rather than applying one blended rate to all tokens:
Monthly API cost = Σ (monthly tokens in each bucket ÷ 1,000,000 × that bucket’s price per million)
Use the live rate for the exact model and service mode, and separate input from output. Add applicable charges for tools, storage, provisioned throughput, regional processing, cache writes and other billable features. Discounts, batch modes, context tiers and promotions can change the effective price.

Provider pricing details to check
- OpenAI: Its published pricing is per million tokens, with rates varying by model, context tier, cached input and output. Its documentation specifies a 10% regional-processing uplift for eligible models released on or after March 5, 2026. Check whether the selected model and endpoint qualify.
- Anthropic: Its pricing table lists model-specific input, output and cache rates. The documented 1.1× multiplier for Claude 4.6 and later applies to US-only inference; default global routing uses standard pricing.
- AWS Bedrock: Rates and billing structures vary by model. Imported model copies are billed in five-minute windows while active, and maximum throughput and concurrency depend on token mix, hardware, model, architecture and inference optimizations. A simple per-token comparison may miss provisioning costs and behavior.
- Google: Google describes a 50% credit against eligible Gemini provisioned-throughput spending for specified models from August 13 through December 31, 2026. As of October 5, 2026, that offer is time-limited; verify model eligibility and billing terms before including it in an estimate.
API prices, model names, geographic billing terms and promotions can change. Treat price comparisons as dated snapshots and check the rate table again for the exact model, region and service mode you plan to use.
How to calculate the full cost of local inference
Estimate the monthly cost of keeping the local system available, then divide by useful work completed:
Monthly local cost = amortized hardware + electricity + host and space costs + operations + redundancy or rental, where applicable

Include the GPU or system, host components, depreciation or amortization, electricity, cooling where relevant, and engineering time for deployment, maintenance, monitoring and scaling. Account for idle periods: an unused GPU still represents an acquisition cost. If uptime matters, include the cost of backup capacity or recovery from a hardware failure.

A dated hardware-cost illustration
A 2026 Presenc AI analysis used these three-year ownership assumptions: an RTX 5090 card at $4,300 with the host extra, a Mac Studio M5 Max with 128GB at $4,799, a DGX Spark at $4,699, and a two-H100 80GB server at $60,000. Its 24/7 model assumed US electricity at $0.15 per kWh and described its power estimates. These are that analysis’s assumptions—not verified current retail quotes, a complete cost estimate for every deployment, or a recommendation. Local costs also depend on the host, usage, operations and electricity price.

When each option is likely to make financial sense
The scenarios below are decision patterns, not universal thresholds. A 2026 Presenc AI analysis modeled a 7B-class workload and reported its break-even results under stated utilization assumptions; those figures apply to that analysis, not every model, API or workload.
| Usage pattern | Likely cost advantage | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional or irregular use | Often favors an API, especially if a suitable local machine would sit idle most of the time. | Compare actual monthly token buckets against the API bill. Include idle hardware cost if considering a purchase. |
| Steady, moderate workload | Could favor either option; utilization, acceptable model quality and hardware cost decide. | Model a realistic utilization rate, operations effort and the cost of the specific API model that meets the task’s quality bar. |
| Sustained high-volume use | Can favor local hosting if the workload keeps capable hardware busy and the ownership and operating costs are lower than the alternative API bill. | Check concurrency, throughput, redundancy and whether local quality is adequate at the expected load. |
| Low-cost hosted open-weight model available | May beat both a costly frontier API and an underused local machine. | Include hosted open-weight APIs as a third option; analysis price bands are examples, not universal market rates. |
What the published break-even examples do—and do not—show
Presenc AI’s 2026 scenario analysis reports a 4–9 month break-even range for a 7B-class workload at 30% workstation utilization against its selected API comparison. For sporadic developer use below 10% utilization, it models a two-to-four-year break-even horizon. These results depend on the analysis’s model, workload, hardware, power and API assumptions. They illustrate how utilization changes the calculation; they do not establish a universal usage threshold.
A 2026 arXiv preprint reports 79 tested configurations across four open-weight models and consumer Blackwell GPUs. It estimates $0.001–$0.04 per million tokens for electricity alone under its tested configurations. That figure excludes hardware and operating costs, so it is not the fully loaded cost of local inference and does not establish quality parity with cloud models.
Cost is only one part of the decision
Before choosing, compare the options using the same task set and expected demand. The available evidence does not establish one controlled comparison across equivalent local and cloud systems for all of these factors.
Quick Recap
- Task quality: Evaluate the models against representative examples and account for failure rates and human review effort.
- Latency and throughput: Measure prompt processing and generated tokens per second under realistic context lengths and concurrent load.
- Demand and scaling: Bursty API demand may be easier to handle without buying capacity for peak load. A local system needs enough capacity for spikes or an acceptable queueing policy.
- Reliability: Consider API capacity and service terms alongside local machine availability, redundancy and what happens during hardware failure.
- Privacy and deployment constraints: Check data-residency requirements, regulated-workload needs and acceptable vendor processing terms. Local inference changes where computation happens, but deployment and data handling still need to be assessed.
A practical break-even workflow
- Set the quality bar. Identify the least expensive local and hosted models that meet the task’s needs, using the same evaluation set where possible.
- Measure a representative month. Record input and output tokens, cached share, context sizes, request frequency, concurrency, retries and background work.
- Price the API case. Apply the exact model’s current input, output, cache and service-mode rates; add applicable regional, tool, storage or provisioned-throughput charges.
- Build the local ledger. Include hardware amortization, host, electricity, cooling or space, operations, idle time and redundancy. Use local electricity rates and realistic power draw.
- Compare useful output. Divide both costs by successful work at the required quality, not raw theoretical capacity.
- Stress-test the assumptions. Recalculate for low and high utilization, demand spikes, a changed token mix and the cost of downtime or human correction.
Decision checklist
- Choose an API first if usage is low or irregular, avoiding capital expense matters, or demand spikes make local capacity hard to size.
- Consider local inference if a suitable model meets the task’s quality bar and a steady workload can keep the hardware productively occupied.
- Price a hosted open-weight model before deciding between a frontier API and owned hardware.
- Do not call local inference cheaper based only on electricity per token; include hardware, host and operations.
- Recheck live API prices, model availability, regional terms, GPU costs and electricity assumptions on the date you make the decision.
