Local LLM Tools in 2026: Pick the Right Runtime, App, or Agent

The best local LLM tool depends on whether you need a model runner, desktop app, document workspace, self-hosted interface, or agent—and what your hardware can support.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single best local LLM tool for everyone. Choose by what you need to do: run a model, use a desktop chat app, ask questions about private files, host a shared web interface, or build an agent that uses tools. Your hardware, comfort with setup, and where your data is routed matter as much as the software.

First, choose the kind of tool you need

“Local LLM tool” covers several different layers. A runtime loads or serves a model; a desktop app makes it easier to find and use models; a web interface connects people to one or more backends; a document workspace organizes retrieval and question-answering over files; and an agent adds tool use and multi-step actions. Some products span more than one layer, but they are not interchangeable.

Need Tools to consider What they are for
Run or serve a model Ollama; llama.cpp Ollama is an approachable local runner with native Open WebUI integration. llama.cpp is a lower-level C/C++ inference project with an API path.
Use a visual desktop workflow LM Studio; Jan Desktop apps for discovering, downloading, and running models. Jan also describes choosing open models or connecting online models.
Ask questions about documents AnythingLLM A workspace for document Q&A, with configurable local models, embeddings, and retrieval workflows.
Offer a self-hosted browser interface Open WebUI; LibreChat Web interfaces that can connect to local and compatible provider backends; configuration determines the actual data route.
Build local-agent workflows LM Studio Bionic; AnythingLLM agents and flows; OpenClaw with a compatible local backend Agent features add tool use or task execution, but reliability depends on the model, tool configuration, and task.
Serve models at higher throughput MLX; vLLM; SGLang; compatible custom endpoints Backend and serving choices for operators, rather than beginner-focused desktop apps. Check endpoint and tool-call compatibility in the target stack.

This is a role-based map, not a performance ranking. The cited product materials do not provide comparable speed, quality, or ease-of-use tests across these options.

Which local LLM tool should you choose?

If this is your first local model

Start by considering LM Studio or Jan if you want a desktop interface and would rather avoid a command-line-first workflow. Open WebUI’s alternatives guide also points desktop-app seekers toward these tools. The app simplifies model discovery and interaction; it cannot make a model fit hardware that lacks the required memory or compute.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.

If you want a local runner or developer API

Consider Ollama for a straightforward runner workflow and its native integration with Open WebUI. Consider llama.cpp if you want a lower-level inference project and API path. The available sources do not establish a universal speed winner between them, so choose based on the integration and operating workflow you need.

If you need document Q&A

AnythingLLM is the clearest fit among these options for a document-centered workspace. Its documentation covers local model and embedding paths, vector database configuration, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) workflows. You still need to select and configure a model and embedding setup. “Private” describes the intended workflow or product positioning; it is not by itself a guarantee that every configuration keeps all data on-device.

If you need a self-hosted team interface

Consider Open WebUI when you want a browser-based interface connected to Ollama or other OpenAI-compatible APIs. Its documentation lists multiple deployment paths, and the project describes native Ollama support alongside compatible providers. LibreChat is another self-hosted, multi-provider interface to consider when provider choice is central to the workflow.

If you want an agent, not just chat

LM Studio’s homepage presents Bionic as an agent for work and code; AnythingLLM documents agents and flows; OpenClaw documents several local-backend options. Treat those as separate from ordinary text generation: verify that the exact model can call the tools your workflow needs and complete the task reliably. A model producing a plausible text response does not prove it can safely or consistently execute a multi-step job.

Check hardware, context, and storage before downloading

There is no single RAM figure that makes every local model usable. Memory needs change with model weights, context size, runtime, and other programs running on the host. OpenClaw’s curated recipes use a 64K context; the smallest recipe has an 8 GiB host-memory floor, but the documentation cautions that meeting a floor does not guarantee the model will fit comfortably or run quickly. Those values describe those recipes, not a general requirement for local LLMs.

  • Allow memory for the model and its runtime, plus the prompt, tools, conversation history, and generated output.
  • Check available GPU memory and disk space as well as system RAM.
  • Expect model downloads to consume substantial storage; external storage can help hold files, but does not replace compute memory or make inference faster by itself.
  • Test the actual tasks and context lengths you plan to use before making a model your default.

OpenClaw’s managed local setup checks available RAM, supported GPU memory, and disk space, then displays model and download details before downloading. That kind of preflight is useful because the model file is only one part of the resource requirement.

Local does not automatically mean offline or private

A self-hosted interface can keep data on infrastructure you control, but the route depends on configuration. Open WebUI supports local backends and external APIs; an external provider, web search, or another connected service can send information outside the machine or network you operate. Check which providers and integrations are enabled, and what each one receives, before entering sensitive material.

Agent permissions deserve particular care. OpenClaw’s documentation warns: “Local models do not provide hosted providers’ safety filters.” Keep tool permissions limited to what the task requires, and use prompt-injection defenses appropriate to the model and the data it can access. A local deployment changes where inference runs; it does not remove the risks of granting an agent access to files, commands, or external services.

What adoption figures and licenses can—and cannot—tell you

Ollama’s homepage reported 9M+ installs a month, 1B+ cumulative model downloads, and 200T+ tokens served in 2026. These are vendor-published figures; the page did not provide a separate methodology in the material reviewed. They indicate figures Ollama chose to report, not independently measured market share, comparative model quality, or a reason it will be the best fit for a particular setup.

Licenses also differ across tools and components. The llama.cpp repository identifies its project license as MIT. Open WebUI’s comparison page notes a branding-preservation requirement for its latest components. Before redistributing a product, embedding it in a commercial offering, or modifying it, check the current license for the exact version and components you intend to use.

A practical selection checklist

  • Setup: Decide whether you want a desktop app, are comfortable with command-line configuration, or need a Docker or server deployment.
  • Model and backend: Confirm that the model format and serving method work with your chosen app, API, and operating system.
  • Hardware and context: Check memory, GPU support, disk space, and the context length your real tasks require.
  • Integrations: If you need an API, document retrieval, MCP, or tool calls, verify that the exact combination supports it.
  • Data routing: Identify whether prompts, documents, searches, or tool outputs go to local services, external providers, or both.
  • Deployment and license: Review the current deployment requirements and license terms for the specific version and components.
