Local AI runs a model on your device or infrastructure you control; cloud AI sends requests to a provider’s remote systems. Local use can keep prompts on-device, avoid a network round trip and work offline, but performance depends on your hardware and chosen model. Cloud services simplify infrastructure and can scale, but introduce provider data handling, an internet dependency and usage costs. The right choice depends on the sensitivity of your data, workload, hardware and operating budget—not on a universal winner.
What happens to your data?
Local AI
With local inference, the prompt can remain on the device rather than being sent to an AI provider. Microsoft’s Windows developer guidance describes potential privacy and security benefits when data stays on-device, while emphasizing that data-security responsibility rests with the user: Microsoft Learn: Windows AI overview. Local execution does not make a system automatically secure. You still need to protect the device, credentials, model files and any stored inputs or outputs, and maintain software updates.

Cloud AI
A cloud request sends data to remote provider infrastructure. Before using it for sensitive work, check the provider’s data-handling terms and the rules that apply to your information. Cloud compute can be located domestically or internationally; location can affect latency and may matter to governance, but location by itself does not establish that a service meets privacy or compliance requirements. The OECD discusses public cloud compute across domestic and international locations and the latency sensitivity of AI inference: OECD, AI Compute and Climate.

| Cost factor | Local AI | Cloud AI |
|---|---|---|
| Up-front capacity | Device or infrastructure purchase; the model and workload determine required compute, memory and storage. | Typically uses provider infrastructure rather than requiring you to buy inference hardware. |
| Ongoing use | Electricity, maintenance, replacements and the cost of operating the equipment. | Provider charges can accrue with usage and duration; pricing depends on the service and workload. |
| Operational effort | You manage deployment, compatibility and updates. | The provider manages underlying infrastructure, though you still manage your application and its use of the service. |
Microsoft’s guidance characterizes local inference as having no additional cost beyond the initial device-hardware investment, and cloud costs as potentially accumulating with resource use and duration. That is a comparison of cost structures, not proof that local is cheaper for a particular workload. A cost-benefit preprint likewise frames the comparison around hardware requirements, operating expense and performance rather than establishing a universal market price or break-even threshold: Cost-benefit framework preprint.
For a practical estimate, include hardware purchase and replacement, electricity, maintenance, engineering and operations, expected utilization, and cloud usage charges. Underused local hardware can be an expensive way to serve occasional requests; sustained use does not guarantee savings if the equipment, staffing or workload makes local operation costly.

Which option is faster?
Local inference avoids the network round trip to a remote service and can be useful when the connection is poor or unavailable. But local speed is bounded by the device’s CPU, GPU, memory, storage and the model’s requirements. A larger or more demanding model can perform poorly on hardware that cannot support it adequately.

There is no sound general-purpose speed ranking without specifying the model, hardware, workload, connection and cloud service. Check the requirements for the exact model and task, then evaluate performance under your own conditions rather than relying on a generic speed claim.
What are the operational trade-offs?
Local deployments
- You choose and maintain the hardware and handle model deployment, updates and compatibility.
- Capacity is constrained by the equipment available. Scaling may mean upgrading hardware or adding devices.
- Once the model and application are set up, local inference can be available without an internet connection.
Cloud deployments
- The provider operates the underlying compute infrastructure and can offer scalable resources.
- Your service depends on connectivity and on the provider’s availability and response time.
- You must account for provider data handling and usage-based or other service charges.
For either approach, start by identifying the model capability and workload you actually need. Then check memory, compute and storage requirements before committing to a device or deployment plan. A GPU-equipped desktop or workstation may be relevant for local inference, but the required configuration depends on the particular model and task; the label “GPU workstation” alone does not establish that it will run a workload well.

Can local and cloud AI be combined?
Yes. A hybrid application can try local inference first and send a request to the cloud only when the local model is unavailable, the device is unsupported or the task needs a larger model. Microsoft describes this pattern in its Windows AI developer guidance: Microsoft Learn: Windows AI overview.

How to choose
- Favor local inference when keeping prompts on-device or working offline matters, and you can support the model with available hardware and operational effort.
- Favor cloud inference when you need provider-managed infrastructure or scalable capacity and can accept its connectivity, data-handling and cost trade-offs.
- Consider a hybrid design when local handling suits routine tasks but some requests require a larger model, provided you control and disclose when data is sent to a provider.
Before deciding, write down your data constraints, target workload, required model capability, expected usage and available hardware. Those specifics determine whether the apparent advantages of local or cloud inference translate into a better fit for your situation.
