A loading indicator often flickers because the work finishes just after the interface displays its pending state: the indicator appears, then disappears as soon as the result arrives. In React, a separate cause is that already visible content suspends during an update, making its Suspense boundary show the fallback again. The right fix depends on which behavior your app has.
First find out what is switching the loading state
Trace the pending state from start to finish. Identify what turns it on, what marks the work complete, and which component or loading boundary controls what the user sees. A fast request, repeated state updates, conditional rendering, and framework-specific loading behavior can look similar on screen but call for different fixes.

- If a loading flag turns on and off around a very short operation, the indicator may be appearing for work that is already nearly done.
- If visible content is replaced by a fallback during an update, inspect the framework’s loading-boundary behavior. In React, this can happen when content inside a Suspense boundary suspends again.
Until you know which case applies, treat the symptom—not a particular framework—as the diagnosis.

When an ordinary pending state frequently ends almost immediately, a brief show delay can prevent the interface from flashing a spinner or skeleton for work the user barely has time to perceive. Vercel’s Web Interface Guidelines suggest a show delay of about 150–300 ms and a minimum visible time of about 300–500 ms. Use timing as a targeted adjustment, not a blanket rule. Keep feedback responsive when a wait is meaningful, and make sure the user still receives a clear result or error. Tune the behavior to the interaction rather than hiding every loading state for a fixed interval.
For React Suspense, inspect the boundary and the update
React Suspense shows a fallback while supported child content is not ready, then reveals the content when it is ready. A boundary may show its fallback again if content it had already displayed suspends during a later update. React warns that replacing visible UI with a fallback can feel jarring. Match boundary placement to the loading sequence
Check which part of the screen the boundary replaces. React advises against putting a Suspense boundary around every component; boundaries should follow the sequence of loading states the interface is meant to present. A boundary around too much content can make a local delay replace a larger visible region.
Consider whether the update should replace revealed content
For some non-urgent updates, React’s startTransition or useDeferredValue can avoid showing a fallback in place of already revealed content. These APIs address update and reveal behavior; they do not add a minimum spinner duration. React also documents coordination of suspended-content reveals within a 300 ms window. That reveal coordination is distinct from Vercel’s separate guidance for delaying an indicator’s appearance and keeping it visible for a minimum time. Decide whether an indicator helps at all
A loading indicator is most useful when the wait is long enough that an empty screen would leave the user unsure what is happening. Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines recommend showing an indicator when content needs a second or two to load instead of leaving the screen blank. This is guidance for interface design, not a universal cutoff. Apple Human Interface Guidelines: Loading

A practical troubleshooting order
- Trace the pending state: find the event or request that sets it, the completion path that clears it, and any other updates that can toggle it.
- Classify the flicker: determine whether a brief operation is producing a short-lived indicator or whether a visible region is being replaced by a framework fallback.
- Apply the narrow fix: try a short delayed show for an ordinary loading flag; for React Suspense, inspect boundary scope and whether the update can be treated as non-urgent.
- Check the whole interaction: confirm that meaningful waits still get feedback, errors remain visible, and a local delay does not unnecessarily replace a larger area of the screen.
