Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, note:
- Which program displays the error? Record the application name and the executable path if the message provides it.
- When does it appear? Check whether it happens during startup, printing, login, or after a printer-driver update or Windows upgrade.
- Is the requesting program 32-bit or 64-bit? Available file records identify
lmlayout.dllas a 32-bit Win32 component. A 32-bit application normally needs its matching 32-bit dependency, even on 64-bit Windows. - Was the file quarantined? Check Windows Security before reinstalling or restoring anything.
- Do you still use the printer software? If not, removing the obsolete package is safer than rebuilding it.

It is not a Windows system file, Visual C++ component, DirectX file, or .NET component, so repairing Windows alone usually does not restore it.
The internal description associated with the file is PDPLay. Archive records commonly identify it as a 32-bit module, but those records are historical metadata rather than a current installer or supported product page. The safest repair is to restore the complete printer software package, not to download this individual DLL.

Fix 1: Identify the program requesting lmlayout.dll
The error may appear as:
- “This application failed to start because lmlayout.dll was not found.”
- “The file lmlayout.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “lmlayout.dll not found.”
- “Cannot find lmlayout.dll.”
- “The program can’t start because lmlayout.dll is missing.”
- “The file lmlayout.dll is missing.”
These are generic Windows DLL messages. They do not prove that a particular modern application or game uses the file.
Check the error window
Read the title bar and the first line of the message. The title may identify the executable or parent application. Write down the name before closing the dialog.

If the message appears during printing, open the printer software and check its About, Help, or installation information. Look for Printer Driver Plus, DeviceGuys, or an older printer/OEM package. Historical records also associate related Printer Driver Plus components with some Lexmark or Compaq installations, but that is not a universal identification.
Check installed applications
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Printer Driver Plus.
- Also search for the printer manufacturer’s software, printer utilities, or an older OEM package.
- Select the program and choose Advanced options, if shown.
For classic software:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Review Programs and Features for Printer Driver Plus or printer-related software.
If you find a matching program, repair that package before using system-repair commands.
Identify an orphaned startup entry
If the error appears immediately after signing in and no printer program opens:

- Right-click Start and select Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an obviously obsolete printer utility temporarily.
- Restart Windows.
If the error stops, the disabled entry is likely calling the missing DLL. Do not delete an entry merely because its name is unfamiliar. Confirm its file path and remove the related application through Installed apps or Programs and Features.
For persistent cases, check Event Viewer:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Open Windows Logs → Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the same time as the DLL message.
- Note the faulting application name and path.
Fix 2: Repair Printer Driver Plus or the printer package
Repair is the quickest safe fix when the parent program is still installed.
Use Windows app repair
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Apps → Installed apps.
- Find Printer Driver Plus or the printer/OEM software linked to the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Restart Windows and test the application or printer.
Repair normally preserves the application and replaces damaged program files. If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the same screen and use Reset where appropriate. Reset can remove application data and settings, so record printer preferences first.
Use the classic repair option
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Right-click the relevant printer program.
- Select Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
If the installer asks for original media or a setup source that is no longer available, do not fill the gap with a DLL download. Obtain the complete printer software from the printer manufacturer or the organization that supplied the computer and printer.

If repair fails:
- Disconnect or turn off the affected printer.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Uninstall Printer Driver Plus or the related printer utility.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the obsolete printer and choose Remove.
- Restart again if Windows requests it.
- Install the complete printer package from the printer manufacturer’s official support channel.
- Reconnect the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Print a test page.
Microsoft recommends getting printer drivers from the printer manufacturer rather than from third-party driver collections. The installer should supply the DLL in its correct application or driver directory, along with its related files and dependencies.

A successful repair should remove the missing-file message and allow the parent application or print operation to start. If the same error returns immediately, identify the executable requesting it instead of repeatedly reinstalling unrelated drivers.
Fix 3: Update or reinstall the printer driver
A failed printer update can leave a partial package behind. Use Device Manager when the problem involves the printer itself.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and, if present, Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the affected printer.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test printing.
If Windows does not find a suitable driver, download the complete current package from the printer manufacturer’s official support page. Match the package to your Windows edition and the printer model. Do not download lmlayout.dll by itself.

If the problem began immediately after a driver update:
- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click the printer under Printers or Print queues.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Restart Windows.
If rollback is unavailable, uninstall the device:
- In Device Manager, right-click the printer.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the printer manufacturer’s complete driver package.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an old printer component. Restore it only when you can establish that it came from a known-good original installer or verified backup.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections related to
lmlayout.dll, Printer Driver Plus, or the printer software. - Open the detection and inspect its path and details.
Do not allow the file merely because its name matches the missing filename. An unknown DLL from an archive is not trustworthy provenance. If the file came from the original printer installer and the detection is clearly a false positive, follow the available Windows Security option to restore or allow it, then reinstall the complete package if possible.

Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined item can cause Defender to detect it again unless it is explicitly allowed. If the file is in an unexpected directory, has no trustworthy origin, or malware is suspected, leave it quarantined and scan the complete computer.
Fix 5: Remove obsolete printer software instead
If you replaced the printer or no longer use Printer Driver Plus, restoring the DLL is unnecessary.

- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Uninstall Printer Driver Plus and obsolete printer utilities.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Remove printers that are no longer used.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select View devices and printers.
- Remove any remaining obsolete printer device.
- Restart Windows.
If the error still appears after removal, look for a leftover startup entry, scheduled task, service, or printer-driver package. The application event log can reveal the executable that is still making the request.
Do not remove a driver package used by another active printer without checking its model and port first.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only for broader corruption
lmlayout.dll is not a protected Windows component. Therefore, System File Checker is not the primary fix for this particular file.
Use DISM and SFC when you also see wider Windows problems, such as damaged built-in applications, update failures, unexplained system errors, or multiple missing Windows files.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
DISM should be run before SFC. These commands repair protected Windows components and the Windows component store. They do not reliably reinstall a third-party Printer Driver Plus DLL.
Repeating SFC and DISM without identifying the parent application will not solve an orphaned printer startup entry or an incomplete printer installation.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore may help when the error began directly after a driver installation, cleanup utility, or Windows change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system settings, installed drivers, and some software changes. It does not normally target personal documents, but review the affected-program list carefully.

If the problem began after an uninstall, reinstalling or properly removing the parent printer package is usually more direct than restoring the entire system.
Why copying the DLL is usually wrong
Do not copy a downloaded lmlayout.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 as a default fix.
That approach can fail because:
- The DLL may be the wrong build or architecture.
- The download may contain malware.
- The file may require companion files from Printer Driver Plus.
- The application may expect the DLL in its own driver directory.
- A mismatched file can create new crashes or version conflicts.
- It does not repair an incomplete installation or orphaned startup entry.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 supports 32-bit Windows components. That naming is confusing, but neither directory is a general-purpose home for third-party application DLLs. Let the complete installer place the 32-bit file where the requesting program expects it.
Does regsvr32 fix lmlayout.dll?
Usually not.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, commonly ActiveX or other self-registering components. An application-support or printer-driver DLL does not necessarily provide that entry point.
If you run it against a non-registering DLL, Windows may report:
The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.
That message does not mean the DLL is missing. It means registration is not the operation the file supports. Do not use regsvr32 unless the printer software’s own documentation or installer specifically requires it.
When to use Windows Features
Windows Features are not relevant to restoring lmlayout.dll. Do not enable .NET Framework, legacy components, or other optional features simply because a generic DLL page recommends them. There is no reliable evidence that Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET installs this printer DLL.
Install a runtime only when the identified parent application explicitly requires that runtime and provides the requirement through its official setup documentation.

If the repair still fails
Use this escalation order:
- Record the exact error and the program name.
- Find the requesting executable and its path.
- Remove obsolete Printer Driver Plus remnants.
- Reinstall the complete printer manufacturer package.
- Check Event Viewer for the application fault.
- Check Windows Security Protection history.
- Use System Restore if a recent driver or cleanup change caused the failure.
- Run DISM and SFC only when broader Windows corruption is present.
- Scan the system if the DLL appears in an unexpected location or malware is suspected.
A process-monitoring utility can also show which executable attempts to load lmlayout.dll, but the parent program’s repair or reinstall should remain the preferred solution.

Is lmlayout.dll a Windows file?
No. Available evidence identifies it as a third-party component associated with Printer Driver Plus and attributed to DeviceGuys.
What does PDPLay mean?
PDPLay is the internal or description name associated with lmlayout.dll. It identifies the module in file metadata; it is not a separate Windows feature.
Should I download lmlayout.dll?

A trustworthy separate 64-bit version has not been established. Available metadata identifies the file as 32-bit. Reinstall the package that matches the application requesting it rather than mixing architectures.
What if I no longer use the printer?
Uninstall Printer Driver Plus and remove obsolete printer entries. Removing the parent software is safer than restoring a DLL that no current application needs.
Is the file malware?
The filename alone does not prove that. Verify its path, origin, signer, and relationship to a known printer installation. If it was quarantined or appears in an unexpected location, scan the complete system before restoring it.
