An API bill is easier to estimate from token usage, while self-hosting adds capacity, infrastructure and operating costs. Compare them using the same workload, model capability and service targets; otherwise, a lower per-token figure may not mean a lower cost to deliver useful results.
What are you actually comparing?
There are three practical options: call a hosted model through a provider API, run a model on hardware you own, or run it on rented cloud GPUs. The last two are both self-hosted in the sense that you operate the inference service, but their infrastructure bills differ.

A fair comparison asks what it costs each option to serve the same work successfully at the required quality, latency and reliability. Compare cost per successful request or task—not just cost per token. If one model produces weaker answers and requires more retries, human review or correction, its lower token cost may be misleading.

What should go into an API cost estimate?
API prices vary by model and pricing tier. Providers may distinguish input tokens, output tokens, cached input, batch processing, priority service or regional processing. Use the rate that applies to the specific model, endpoint and tier you would actually use, and date the estimate.
For a basic estimate, calculate input-token charges and output-token charges separately across the workload, then account for any applicable caching, batch or regional rates. Use your own request patterns rather than multiplying an average request by total traffic if context lengths or response sizes vary substantially.

- Count requests per day and the distribution of requests during the busiest hour.
- Estimate input and output tokens separately, including long-context requests.
- Record concurrency and the latency target, not only total daily volume.
- Apply caching, batch or priority pricing only when the feature and rate apply to your use case.
- Record the model, tier, endpoint, region and date alongside each rate.
Provider pricing pages illustrate why these details matter. OpenAI lists model-specific input, cached-input and output rates; eligible regional-processing endpoints can have a 10% uplift for models released on or after March 5, 2026. Google’s Gemini API pricing page identifies some rates scheduled to change on January 1, 2027. Anthropic’s Claude Fable page lists a 1.1× multiplier for US-only inference. These are provider- and offering-specific examples, not universal API pricing rules. Check the current terms before using any rate in a budget.

What does self-hosting cost beyond a GPU?
A GPU-hour is only one line in a self-hosted service’s lifecycle cost. Include the capacity needed to meet peak demand, as well as the share of that capacity that sits idle at quieter times. Then account for the people and systems required to deploy, monitor and maintain the service.

- Compute capacity: hardware you own or rented cloud GPUs, sized for the chosen model and required peak throughput.
- Infrastructure: power and cooling, networking, storage, and any redundancy needed to meet your availability target.
- Software and deployment: the inference runtime and the work to configure, test and update it.
- Operations: monitoring, incident response, capacity planning, security work and model or runtime upgrades.
- Utilization: the cost of provisioned capacity that is not serving requests, especially when demand is uneven.
Owned hardware and rented GPUs move costs into different budget categories, but neither removes the need to plan for capacity and operations. A 2025 preprint proposing the LCOAI framework argues that API token costs, GPU-hour billing and traditional total-cost-of-ownership calculations can each omit lifecycle costs. It offers a proposed framework, not a standardized industry accounting rule.

- Define a representative workload. Use request volume, peak-hour demand, input and output token distributions, context lengths and concurrency. Set target latency and identify the model capability the task requires.
- Estimate API spend for that trace. Apply the current model-specific rates and include only applicable pricing features, such as caching or batch processing.
- Size self-hosted capacity against peak demand. Benchmark the selected model and runtime on the hardware you plan to use. Estimate realistic utilization rather than assuming every GPU is busy all the time.
- Add the full operating cost. Include infrastructure, redundancy, deployment, monitoring, upgrades and engineering and operations effort.
- Compare equivalent outcomes. Measure task success and downstream correction or review effort, along with latency, throughput and reliability at peak load.
- Run more than one demand case. Compare low, expected and high utilization. Idle capacity can materially change self-hosting economics.
Where a requirement such as data locality, control over model weights or customization is mandatory, identify it as a constraint and price the work needed to satisfy it. Do not assign it an assumed financial benefit. The public source examples do not quantify these tradeoffs across matched organizations.

What do the published GPU figures show—and not show?
NVIDIA’s H100 FAQ reports benchmark figures attributed to SemiAnalysis InferenceX as of April 2026. They are useful as workload-qualified examples, not as a forecast of typical production cost or an independently validated comparison with API rates.

| Reported setup | Reported cost | Workload qualifier |
|---|---|---|
| H100, GPT-OSS-120B, vLLM | $0.09 per million tokens | 66 tokens per second per user; NVIDIA, citing SemiAnalysis InferenceX, April 2026 |
| B200, GPT-OSS-120B, TensorRT-LLM | $0.02 per million tokens | 55 tokens per second per user; NVIDIA, citing SemiAnalysis InferenceX, April 2026 |
These two figures do not isolate the effect of hardware: the reported setups use different inference runtimes and different per-user throughput. They also do not establish a universal cost for running either GPU, nor do they include a matched organization’s complete lifecycle cost. Do not compare them directly with an API rate unless the model capability, workload, token accounting and service target are comparable.
When does each approach make sense?
| Option | Potential fit | What to scrutinize |
|---|---|---|
| Hosted API | Useful when you want model access without operating inference hardware, or when demand may vary and you want to estimate spend from usage. | Model and tier rates, endpoint or regional pricing, peak latency, availability expectations and the requirements for handling your data. |
| Self-hosted on owned hardware | Worth evaluating when control over deployment, model weights or data location is a requirement, or when you can provision and operate capacity for the workload. | Utilization, upfront and ongoing infrastructure, redundancy, operations effort, model quality and measured peak performance. |
| Self-hosted on rented cloud GPUs | Worth evaluating when you need to operate a model yourself but prefer rented compute over owning the hardware. | GPU capacity and utilization costs, scaling speed, the complete service workload and the engineering burden of running inference. |
These are evaluation criteria, not universal advantages: the available sources do not establish that one option is cheaper, faster to scale or more reliable for every organization. The deciding evidence is a workload-specific comparison against the service target you need.
