LLM-Generated JSON for API Tests: What to Know

Use LLMs to create varied API test payloads without mistaking plausible JSON for valid data. A contract-first workflow combines clear field guidance, schema validation, business-rule checks, and API execution.

LLMs can generate varied, domain-appropriate JSON for API tests, but plausible-looking data is not proof that a payload is valid. The reliable approach is contract-first: ground generation in the API specification and business rules, constrain the response where possible, validate it in code, and exercise the API to check behavior and multi-call dependencies.

What makes LLM-generated API test data reliable?

Use the model to produce candidate test cases, not to decide whether they are correct. A useful process separates three questions: does the JSON match the request contract, does it make sense under the application’s business rules, and does the API accept it in the state created by the test?

  • Contract fidelity: required fields, types, formats, allowed values, and additional-property rules.
  • Semantic realism: values that fit field meanings, domain conventions, and business policies.
  • Runtime behavior: valid state transitions and relationships to resources created by earlier calls.

Schema validation can establish much of the first question. It cannot, by itself, prove the latter two.

How to prepare an API contract for generation

Start with the current OpenAPI description and the JSON schema for the request body. Give the model the endpoint’s purpose, parameter meanings, required fields, allowed values, and relevant business rules. Microsoft recommends relevant, well-structured reference material and clear descriptions of API paths and parameters; it also notes that business policies can help a model use an API specification correctly. See Microsoft’s synthetic-data guidance (identified there as preview).

Do not assume that a property name explains its meaning. A field called status, for example, may have a defined set of states and transition rules. Specify those rules explicitly, including any relationships between fields that the schema does not express.

How to prompt for bounded JSON output

Ask for a precise output shape and explain what each field represents. Specify the number and variety of records, whether extra properties are forbidden, and any constraints that should vary across examples. Make clear whether the output must be a JSON array, a single object, or another structure, and avoid surrounding commentary if the consumer expects JSON only.

Field guidance is more reliable than inference from terse names. Google’s synthetic-data API supports required output-field specifications, optional per-field guidance, optional few-shot examples, and a task description. Its documentation says explicit guidance is preferred when a field name could be ambiguous. The stateless API reference documents a maximum of 50 examples per request; that is a service limit, not a recommended batch size. See Google Cloud’s synthetic-data API documentation.

Use examples to clarify conventions

Representative examples can show formats, tone, or domain conventions that are difficult to capture in a short description. They should clarify the target rather than silently replace the contract. Google says examples can improve generated-data quality and relevance. Microsoft recommends generating a small sample, inspecting it, revising reference material or settings, and scaling only after review.

How to validate generated JSON

Parse every response and validate it independently of the model. OWASP’s LLM Verification Standard says JSON expected from a model should be syntactically valid and schema-validated for expected fields and unwanted extra properties. It recommends structured output or constrained decoding where supported as defense in depth. Read OWASP’s LLM Verification Standard.

  1. Parse: reject malformed JSON and unexpected wrappers or explanatory text.
  2. Validate the schema: check required properties, types, formats, enumerations, and whether additional properties are allowed.
  3. Check application rules: test cross-field consistency, business constraints, and resource relationships that are not represented in the schema.
  4. Run the request: execute the payload against the API in an appropriate test environment and inspect both the response and resulting state.
  5. Record failures: preserve the input, validation result, API response, and relevant test setup so failures can be reproduced.

Google Cloud cautions that JSON mode without a response schema is a strong hint, not a guarantee of valid JSON. Its guidance recommends using both JSON response mode and a response schema, or client-side validation and retries when a schema cannot be predefined. Supported schema fields are a subset, and complex schemas can fail validation or exceed service limits. Check the current Google Cloud guidance on controlling generated output before relying on a particular schema feature.

How to test workflows that span API calls

For a multi-step test, a later call may require an identifier or state produced by an earlier call. Treat dependencies inferred by an LLM as hypotheses: confirm them by executing the calls and checking concrete responses, then refine the resource pools and input constraints based on what the API actually returns.

The 2026 APIPilot preprint describes this execution-feedback approach. Its authors report 92.3% operation coverage, up to 58.6% code coverage, and an 88.1% workflow execution success rate in an evaluation of 16 REST API services. These are results from that paper’s evaluation, not expected performance or a guarantee for another API. See the APIPilot preprint.

Can synthetic data replace production data?

Synthetic test values can reduce reliance on actual captured values, but the label “synthetic” is not a universal privacy guarantee. Katalon describes a synthetic mode that derives values from captured patterns without using the actual captured values, in contrast with raw and raw-with-mocked-PII modes. That product description illustrates one approach; it does not establish that every synthetic-data workflow is anonymous, risk-free, or legally compliant. See Katalon’s documentation on synthetic test data.

Do not send sensitive production data to a model unless your organization has approved the service and its data handling. When realistic patterns are needed, use approved, minimized reference material and verify that generated values do not reproduce sensitive inputs.

A practical review checklist

  • Is the OpenAPI description and request schema current for the environment being tested?
  • Are field meanings, allowed values, and business rules explicit?
  • Does the output meet the required JSON shape, with no unintended properties?
  • Have you checked schema constraints separately from business logic and runtime state?
  • Have a small sample and its failures been reviewed before increasing volume?
  • Are sensitive inputs and provider data-handling practices approved for this use?
