A broadcast-quality remote studio can travel as checked luggage, but only if you plan around two limits: the weight and size rules of your airline, and the lithium battery rules that decide what may not go in the hold. A TechRadar Pro build published on 18 September 2026 shows the approach: a full camera, switcher, audio and lighting rig packed into two Pelican Air 1615 cases, each targeted at under 50 lb. This guide walks through that build, explains why each piece earned its place, and covers the rules that can quietly break a plan like this.

What the featured build set out to do

The author built a summer studio so they could take part in Office Hours Global remotely while in Silicon Valley. According to the TechRadar Pro article, there were three constraints:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Everything fits in two Pelican Air 1615 cases, each under 50 lb.
  • Audio and video quality are comparable to the author’s permanent studio.
  • The author’s MacBook Pro stays free for other work.

The article reports that the gear did fit in the two cases. Two caveats matter. The 50 lb figure is the author’s own target, not a universal airline allowance. And “comparable quality” is the author’s design requirement; no independent measurement comparing the travel rig with the permanent studio has been published in the sources consulted.

The equipment list and what each part does

Role Gear named in the article Why it matters in a travel rig
Computer Apple Mac mini M4 A dedicated machine keeps the call and production workload off the MacBook Pro.
Camera and lens Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro with Canon EF 24–70mm f/2.8L II Cinema-grade image, with a zoom that covers different framings without carrying several lenses.
Switcher Blackmagic ATEM Mini Extreme ISO Takes the camera feed and presents it to the computer as a clean source.
Microphone and mixer Heil PR 40 into a Sound Devices MixPre-6 II, with NoiseAssist for real-time room noise reduction Broadcast-style dynamic mic, with noise handling suited to untreated rooms.
Monitoring Shure PSM 300 In-ear monitoring for the presenter.
Lighting Two GVM LED panels Controlled, repeatable light wherever the room is.
I/O OWC Thunderbolt Go Dock Consolidates connections to the computer.
Uplink A long Ethernet run Wired connection rather than relying on Wi-Fi.
Platform Paid Zoom account with the enhanced media add-on Higher-quality media handling for the call itself.
Control Elgato Stream Deck One-touch control of the session.

Displays were deliberately left out. The author found them fragile to pack and cheaper to buy at the destination. That is a reasonable personal call, not a rule: it works only if you can reliably get a monitor on arrival.

The signal chain in plain terms

The article’s wiring diagram is not reproduced here, but the text identifies the key paths: the camera feeds the ATEM switcher, the audio chain is built around the mixer, and the uplink is a long Ethernet cable. The point of the design is separation. The camera and audio gear do the quality work; the Mac mini only runs the call.

On the switcher, Blackmagic’s ATEM Mini family specifications describe a live production switcher with four HDMI inputs, a hardware streaming engine, USB recording, USB webcam output, an audio mixer, transitions, chroma key and stills for titles. Those are family-level specifications; confirm feature details for the exact model and current firmware before you rely on a specific capability. Also note that a switcher alone is not a studio. It only becomes one when paired with a camera, clean audio, light and a dependable uplink.

The air-travel rules that decide what goes in the cases

Lithium batteries

This is where a studio-in-a-case plan most often fails. Under FAA passenger guidance:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Lithium-ion powered devices such as cameras and computers should be kept in accessible carry-on baggage.
  • If a lithium-powered portable electronic device does go in checked baggage, it must be completely powered off and protected from accidental activation and damage.
  • Spare lithium batteries, including power banks and portable chargers, must travel in carry-on baggage and be protected against short circuits.

An airline accepting a case at the counter does not mean its contents comply. Treat the battery rule as a packing requirement of its own.

Watt-hour limits

The FAA’s passenger guidance allows lithium-ion batteries of 0–100 Wh, requires airline approval for 101–160 Wh, and forbids batteries over 160 Wh on passenger aircraft. Read the Wh label on each battery. If only volts and amp-hours are printed, Wh = volts × Ah; for mAh, divide by 1,000 first. A professional camera or audio battery can land in the approval band, and airlines may set stricter limits than the FAA.

Carrier-specific limits

Weight, dimensions, fees, gate-check handling and international rules vary by carrier and itinerary. Check the actual airline and every leg shortly before you travel. A 50 lb target is a sensible design number only if it matches the allowance on your ticket; heavier cases may incur fees or be refused.

A practical packing plan

The following is general guidance derived from the FAA rules, not a description of how the featured author packed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Inventory every battery. List installed and spare batteries, their Wh ratings and which device each belongs to.
  2. Split the load. Spare batteries, power banks and chargers go in carry-on. Consider carrying the most valuable, fragile or irreplaceable item (often the camera body) in the cabin too, as the FAA recommends for lithium-powered electronics.
  3. Power down fully. Anything with a battery that stays in a checked case should be completely off, with switches or buttons protected from being pressed.
  4. Weigh the packed cases against the carrier’s limit, not just your own target, and leave margin for scale differences.
  5. Protect the glass and the connectors. A heavy f/2.8 zoom, a camera body and a mixer each want their own cutout or padding so nothing shifts under load.
  6. Carry the cable you can’t replace. A long Ethernet run is cheap, but you need it on day one of the event.

Choosing the cases

The featured build uses two Pelican Air 1615 cases, chosen to hold the rig while staying within the author’s weight target. Whatever case you pick, verify its empty weight and outside dimensions against your carrier’s rules, since a light case leaves more of the allowance for gear.

  • With one main output volume knob and four independent input volume knob, 4 channels input have no interference to each other. Providing the highest sonic quality even at maximum output level.

Uplink: Ethernet versus cellular bonding

The featured studio relies on a long Ethernet run, which is the simplest and most predictable option when the venue provides a wired port. If it doesn’t, bonded cellular is a separate workflow. LiveU’s LU300S product page describes a portable field encoder combining up to six IP connections (four cellular, Wi-Fi and LAN), accepting HDMI or 12G-SDI up to 4Kp60 10-bit HDR, and weighing just over 900 g / 2 lb. The article’s build did not use it. Cellular performance depends on provider, location and service terms, and the product page does not establish coverage at any particular venue.

A dated example of another approach: a January 2020 LiveU account described a compact event studio in a small suitcase with a Blackmagic ATEM TV Studio HD, three HDMI cameras, a LiveU Solo with modems and a hotspot, a Blackmagic Video Assist monitor and an Intel NUC computer. It is a historical illustration, not the 2026 build, and those models may no longer be current.

Adapting the build to your own trip

Decision Options to weigh
Camera inputs One camera is simplest; a four-input switcher leaves room for a second angle or a presentation source.
Workflow Computer-mediated (switcher into a Mac, then Zoom) versus direct streaming from a switcher or encoder.
Connectivity Wired Ethernet at the venue versus a bonded cellular encoder if wired internet is unreliable.
Batteries Installed or spare, and whether each is under 100 Wh or needs airline approval.
Case size and weight Packed weight and dimensions against the actual route’s rules.
Fragile items Which parts are costly to replace if damaged, and which (such as displays) can be sourced at the destination.

The sources document that these differences exist, but none provides a controlled side-by-side performance test, so treat the trade-offs as design considerations rather than ranked results.

Verdict

The featured build shows that separating the computer, camera, switcher, audio chain, lights and uplink into discrete, packable modules is what makes a studio travel-worthy. The part most likely to go wrong is not the gear but the rules around it: confirm your carrier’s weight limits, keep spare batteries and power banks in the cabin, check every Wh rating, and switch off and protect anything battery-powered that stays in checked baggage.
