The most common live-streaming mistake is choosing settings your internet connection cannot sustain. A lower bitrate or resolution that stays live is usually better than a sharper stream that keeps dropping frames. Match the stream to your stable upload capacity, rehearse the actual setup, preview before going live, and use the destination platform’s diagnostics when problems appear.
1. Setting bitrate higher than your connection can sustain
Your configured bitrate must fit the upload connection available throughout the broadcast—not just the peak result from a speed test. OBS says dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. YouTube likewise advises keeping the total stream bitrate within available upload capacity and leaving headroom.

Use the headroom guidance for your destination
- YouTube: YouTube Help recommends leaving 20% of available upload bandwidth unused. Treat this as YouTube’s platform guidance, not a universal rule for every service. YouTube streaming tips.
- Twitch: Twitch’s FAQ gives a general practice of having upload speed equal to the stream bitrate plus 30%. Keep this distinct from YouTube’s recommendation; do not average the two. Twitch streaming FAQ.
Both figures are platform recommendations, not independent measurements of what every connection will achieve. Check the relevant platform guidance again before a broadcast, since online recommendations can change.

Resolution, frame rate and bitrate all contribute to the load, and your encoder and computer must also handle the settings. Increase them only when both the system and the stable upload path can sustain the change. Twitch’s Broadcasting Guidelines explicitly favor a stable stream over pushing quality if doing so risks dropped frames. Twitch Broadcasting Guidelines.

2. Treating a speed test as the whole preflight
A connection test cannot tell you whether your full show setup will work. Rehearse with the same scenes and sources you plan to use, including representative movement and audio. Check how the stream looks and sounds in the destination platform’s preview before starting the public broadcast.

- Run the real configuration: use the encoder, scenes, sources and stream settings intended for the event.
- Include representative content: test the amount of movement and audio your show is likely to contain.
- Inspect the preview: check that video and audio are arriving as expected before you go live.
- Check platform health: look for warnings or configuration messages, then keep monitoring during the broadcast.
YouTube recommends testing the stream before an event and monitoring quality during it. Its encoder guidance also explains that settings should be chosen for the broadcast and supported by the encoder. YouTube streaming tips and YouTube encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.

Do not respond to a deteriorating stream by raising quality settings. First reduce the load on the connection and check for instability. The OBS Project says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server; this is a general diagnosis, not proof that every dropped-frame problem has the same cause. Work through network causes systematically
- Reduce video bitrate: OBS recommends lowering it when troubleshooting dropped frames.
- Try another ingest server: the current route or server may be contributing to the connection problem.
- Prefer wired Ethernet when Wi-Fi is unstable: OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable and recommends a wired connection. A cable is relevant only if your equipment supports Ethernet and the problem is related to Wi-Fi; it will not fix encoder overload, a platform outage or every network fault.
- Check software and hardware: OBS identifies VPNs, security software, network “optimization” utilities, drivers and hardware as possible factors. Consider whether any are interfering before changing multiple things at once.
Change one likely factor at a time where practical, then check whether the stream improves. This makes it easier to identify what helped instead of masking the original issue.
4. Looking at the wrong diagnostic tool
Use the health information from the destination platform as well as the encoder’s own indicators. A warning may point to a configuration problem even when the local preview looks normal.

5. Leaving the whole setup untested until showtime
The most useful test is a rehearsal of the complete broadcast path: configured encoder, network, ingest destination, preview and platform health. A speed result by itself does not test that path. If possible, run the rehearsal before the event rather than discovering a weak connection, unsuitable bitrate or warning while viewers are waiting.
