Live streaming games means playing a game while broadcasting that gameplay over the internet so an audience can watch in real time. Viewers may also chat during the broadcast; a webcam is optional.
What does live streaming games mean?
In a live game stream, the game runs on the streamer’s PC or console. The player sends a real-time broadcast of the gameplay to a streaming platform, where viewers can watch. Epic Games describes the activity as playing on a PC or console while broadcasting to a platform of the player’s choice in its beginner’s guide, published July 18, 2025.

The broadcast may include the player’s voice, a webcam view, or live chat, but none of those is necessary to understand the basic definition: gameplay is being shared live with an online audience.

No. Live streaming games usually means broadcasting gameplay that you are playing so other people can watch. Cloud gaming means playing a game delivered to your device over the internet. The phrase “game streaming” can refer to either activity, so context matters; this article uses it in the broadcast sense.

How does a live game stream work?
- Choose the gameplay source. The game runs on a gaming PC or console.
- Send the gameplay to a broadcast route. A PC typically uses streaming software to capture and encode the game. Some consoles provide built-in broadcast options; other console setups can route the game through a capture card and software.
- Configure the stream. The streamer selects a platform and adjusts video and audio settings. A microphone can carry voice, while a webcam can add a face camera.
- Preview and go live. The streamer checks the output, starts the broadcast, and viewers watch through the platform.
- Interact if desired. When chat is enabled, viewers can respond while the game is underway. The streamer may also review the broadcast afterward.
These steps describe the general workflow rather than a single platform’s current menu labels. For example, Xbox Wire’s February 23, 2022 guide documents an Xbox-to-Twitch broadcast route, but platform interfaces and options can change.
What equipment is needed to stream gameplay?
The essentials depend on the chosen platform and how much control the streamer wants. A direct console broadcast may need less setup than a PC-based or capture-card workflow. Voice, face camera, and extra customization are choices rather than prerequisites.

For PlayStation, Streamlabs’ guide, published June 23, 2025 and updated August 30, 2025, describes native broadcasting as an entry route and capture-card use with streaming software as an option for more customization. Neither accessory type is required for every gameplay broadcast.

Some consoles offer built-in broadcasting, which can provide a simpler route than configuring a separate PC workflow. PlayStation’s documented options include native broadcasting and a capture card with streaming software for additional customization. What live streaming games does not tell you
The definition alone does not establish how large a streamer’s audience will be, whether a stream will earn money, or how much equipment or bandwidth a particular setup needs. Those outcomes depend on the streamer, platform, equipment, configuration, and audience; they are not guaranteed by broadcasting gameplay.
