Good live streaming etiquette starts before you press Go Live: tell viewers how to participate, prepare moderation, and make room for respectful conversation. There is no single etiquette code that applies to every channel, but clear expectations and active moderation help make a stream welcoming without treating channel preferences as platform rules.
Set expectations before the stream
Give viewers a short, understandable guide to how you want the chat to work. Keep it specific to your channel and the kind of stream you are hosting. For example, you might ask people to stay on topic, welcome questions, avoid spam, and disagree with ideas rather than attack people.
YouTube channel owners can set up to three channel guidelines and a welcome message. Viewers can see the guidelines before participating in live chat. YouTube’s examples include being civil and respectful, staying on topic, welcoming questions, and avoiding self-promotion or spam. Guidelines communicate your expectations; they do not enforce themselves. YouTube says custom guidelines do not automatically hide or remove comments, posts, or live chat messages. Community Guidelines still apply, and moderation actions are a separate step.

Prepare moderation, not just rules
Decide who will watch chat while you focus on hosting. If trusted moderators are available, assign them in advance and agree on when to warn, remove a message, hide a user, or escalate a concern. On a small stream, you may be able to moderate yourself; as chat becomes busier, doing both jobs can make it harder to keep the broadcast moving.
YouTube recommends using live chat moderators to interact with viewers, remove inappropriate messages, and hide abusive users. It also provides controls to hold potentially inappropriate messages for review. Twitch likewise documents chat rules, moderator roles, verification options, follower or subscriber restrictions, a short delay for non-moderators, and hyperlink blocking that can send links to a review queue. Feature availability can vary by account, and platform controls can change; check the current help pages for your channel before relying on a particular setting.

Make conversation feel natural
Treat participation as part of the broadcast, not as an interruption. Welcome people, acknowledge useful questions, and respond when you can. If chat is moving quickly, say that you may not see every message rather than leaving viewers to wonder why you have not replied.

Use the platform’s audience tools when they suit the subject. YouTube’s Live Q&A can help collect questions for a focused discussion, while polls can give viewers a simple way to weigh in. Be consistent and proportionate
Apply your stated rules consistently, and make consequences understandable. A brief reminder may be enough for an ordinary off-topic comment; harassment, spam, or repeated disruption may call for removal or stronger action. Avoid turning every disagreement into a moderation issue, but do not let personal attacks become the price of participating.

Channel rules do not replace platform-wide policies. Twitch’s Community Guidelines cover behavior across its service, including video, chat, whispers, and accounts; violations can result in actions such as content removal, loss of monetization features, warnings, or account suspension. Twitch describes its guidelines as a living document, so review the current version rather than treating any summary as permanent. - Write a few channel-specific guidelines that viewers can understand before joining chat.
- Choose moderators if available, and make sure they know how you want routine issues handled.
- Review the platform’s current moderation controls and decide which preventive settings suit your audience.
- Welcome questions and respond when practical; use a poll or Live Q&A when it helps viewers participate.
- Address disruptive behavior calmly and consistently, using platform tools where appropriate.
- Keep channel preferences distinct from platform policy, and do not assume a written rule automatically removes messages.
