Live Streaming Equipment: What You Need to Go Live

A source, encoder, and stable internet connection are the essentials for going live. Choose optional gear and stream settings to fit your format and workflow.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can go live with a device that captures your content, an encoder that sends it to the platform, and a stable internet connection. A phone or console may combine the source and encoder; a computer setup typically uses broadcasting software such as OBS. A separate camera, microphone, lighting, capture card, and control pad are useful only when your format or workflow calls for them.

The essentials: source, encoder, and internet

A live stream needs three things: something to capture or play the content, an encoder to package and send it, and a stable connection with enough upload capacity for the chosen settings. Twitch describes the same basic requirement: a stable internet connection and a tool that can broadcast video online, such as a console, mobile app, or software encoder. Twitch’s streaming setup guide

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

These functions can be built into one device or split across several. A phone can capture and broadcast directly. A computer can run the content and encoding software. A console may stream natively, or send its video to a computer for a more involved production.

Choose a setup for what you want to stream

Phone or tablet

A mobile device is the simplest route for a stream based on its built-in camera and microphone. Use a stable Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection and check that the platform’s app supports the broadcast you intend to make. You do not need a separate encoder computer for a basic mobile workflow.

Console

A console can broadcast directly when its built-in streaming options suit your needs. You do not need a capture card for native console streaming. Add one only if you want the console’s video to enter a separate computer, where you can combine it with a webcam, overlays, or other sources. Twitch Creator Camp’s setup overview

Computer with broadcasting software

For a computer-based stream, you need a computer capable of running both the content and the encoder, broadcasting software such as OBS, and an internet connection that can sustain the selected bitrate. A microphone is useful when viewers need to hear you, but it is not a platform requirement. A dedicated camera is likewise optional if you do not want an on-camera view.

There is no universal computer specification for streaming: the load depends on the game or other content, resolution, frame rate, encoder, and what else is running. Test the actual workload rather than relying on a generic hardware checklist. Elgato’s streaming setup guide

Hardware encoder or multi-source production

A hardware encoder is another way to send a stream, and may suit a dedicated production workflow. If you need to combine sources—such as a console, camera, and computer graphics—plan how each signal reaches the encoder. A capture card is one possible input for a computer-based setup, not a requirement for every stream.

Which accessories are worth adding?

Equipment When it helps Required?
Microphone When spoken commentary or conversation is part of the stream; a dedicated USB microphone can provide a separate voice input. No. Built-in audio may be enough, and a microphone is not a platform requirement.
Webcam or camera When you want viewers to see you as well as the main content. No. Skip it for gameplay, presentations, or other formats that do not need a face view.
Lighting When a face-camera scene needs a clearer, more consistent image. No. It is an optional production improvement.
Capture card When video from a console or another device must enter a separate streaming computer. No. Direct console streaming does not require one.
Physical stream controls When dedicated buttons would make switching scenes or operating a live production easier. No. Useful for some workflows, but not needed to broadcast.

Buy for a specific limitation you have encountered: unclear voice audio, an unwanted camera image, difficult signal routing, or cumbersome live controls. A full studio setup is not the starting requirement.

Set a quality your connection and encoder can sustain

Measure stable upload performance, then choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that leave enough headroom for reliable delivery. A platform’s bitrate recommendation is a technical target, not a promise that a particular internet plan or Wi-Fi connection will sustain it.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends the following video bitrates for H.264:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Resolution and frame rate H.264 recommended video bitrate AV1 or H.265 recommended video bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps 12 Mbps

These are YouTube recommendations, not universal minimum upload speeds. Codec support varies by device and software, so confirm the combinations your encoder and platform accept. YouTube’s live encoder settings

Encoder settings to check

  • Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS, the secure version of RTMP.
  • Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1; not every device supports every codec or combination.
  • Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps.
  • Keyframes: Use a two-second keyframe interval as YouTube recommends.
  • Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC and MP3.

Check the platform’s current encoder table and the controls available in your software before going live; labels and supported options can differ between devices and encoder versions.

Preflight: test before you go public

  1. Connect the complete setup. Open the camera, game, presentation, or other source and confirm it appears in your chosen app or encoder. For a capture-card workflow, verify that the card receives the intended console signal.
  2. Set a sustainable output. Select your target resolution and frame rate, then choose a bitrate appropriate to the measured, stable upload capacity and YouTube’s guidance.
  3. Check the stream destination and key. In the platform’s live control room, select or create the intended broadcast and use its stream key in your encoder. Treat the key as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to that destination. Do not display or share it.
  4. Test representative audio and motion. Speak at the volume you expect to use and show movement similar to the real stream. Check that speech is intelligible, audio is not clipping, and motion does not break up.
  5. Watch stream health. Use the platform’s health indicators during the test. If the connection cannot sustain the output, reduce the bitrate and retest before making the stream public.

OBS says dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or that the system cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. It recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable. If dropped frames persist, try Ethernet where practical and lower the bitrate; avoid increasing quality until the stream is stable. OBS dropped-frames guidance

Copyright and YouTube live rules matter as much as gear

Equipment cannot make unlicensed music, video, or other protected material safe to broadcast. Use content you own, have permission to use, or are otherwise entitled to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable policies before building a long-running or repeated broadcast around third-party material. A live setup that works technically can still be interrupted or restricted for policy reasons.

Common problems and practical fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to try
Dropped frames or an unstable stream Upload instability or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Use wired Ethernet if possible, lower the bitrate, and test again while watching stream health.
Choppy or delayed-looking motion The encoder, device, or connection may be struggling with the chosen output settings. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate one step at a time, then repeat a representative test.
No audio or unclear speech The wrong input may be selected, a mic may be muted, or the built-in mic may not suit the room. Check the encoder’s audio source and levels; make a short test recording or private test before going public.
Console picture does not appear in the computer The signal path or capture-card input may not be configured as expected. Confirm the console output reaches the card and that the card is selected as a video source in the encoder.
The platform does not receive the stream The destination or stream key may be incorrect, or the encoder’s protocol or format may not match an accepted setting. Check the selected broadcast and key in the platform’s live control room, re-enter the key privately, and verify supported encoder settings.

Budget by solving the next real problem

Start with the device, encoder, and connection you already have. Then spend selectively: a microphone for voice clarity, a webcam and lighting for an on-camera scene, or a capture card when a separate computer must receive a console signal. Physical controls are convenience upgrades, not prerequisites. For a computer-based setup, also account for the time and power required to keep the machine and connection running; a cloud loop is a different workflow for uploaded videos, not a replacement for live camera broadcasting.
