These options serve different purposes: OBS documentation teaches production setup, Twitch’s curriculum is specific to Twitch, and the Graduate School USA syllabus describes a broader class. One is not a substitute for all the others.

What to learn first, in order
- Learn your destination’s go-live workflow. Find the platform’s current instructions for your device and account. Twitch Creator Camp separates its guidance by PC, mobile, PlayStation, and Xbox; steps and policies may differ on other platforms.
- Build a simple scene. In OBS, a scene is a layout made from sources. Add only what the broadcast needs, such as a screen or game capture, a camera, an image, or text. OBS’s guide links to distinct capture-source options.
- Check audio before adding complexity. Confirm that the intended microphone and desktop audio are active. Watch the OBS mixer meters while speaking or playing audio; if the wrong device is selected, choose the correct one manually in the audio settings.
- Review output settings. Check the settings for the destination you plan to use rather than assuming a configuration will work for every platform, computer, or connection.
- Run a short test recording or stream. Confirm that picture and sound are present and that the layout is readable before going public. OBS’s Quick Start Guide, dated August 25, 2021, recommends testing for a few minutes rather than jumping straight into a first broadcast. Its interface guidance may change, so check the current OBS knowledge base if a control has moved.
- Study the platform and audience side. Once the basic setup works, learn the destination’s tools for branding, engagement, community, and analytics. Twitch Creator Camp also addresses monetization and copyright.
- Add cross-platform or format training only if it fits your plan. The Graduate School USA syllabus lists Twitch, YouTube, and TikTok and includes vertical streaming. Platform workflows are not interchangeable, so apply the guidance to the service you actually use.

Class Central lists Justin Brown / Primal Video’s beginner OBS tutorial as a 17-minute video covering settings, platform connections, scenes, audio, going live, and virtual camera. That duration is listing metadata, not a measure of how long an individual will need to learn the material. Graduate School USA’s Streaming for Social Media syllabus describes group instruction in live-online and onsite formats. - Goal: Is the instruction about software and production setup, or about a platform’s creator and community practices?
- Platform scope: Is the material Twitch-specific, or does it address the services you plan to use?

- Commercial details: For any paid class, confirm current dates, price, what is included, cancellation terms, and whether a credential is actually offered. The Graduate School USA syllabus reviewed here does not establish those details.
- Currency of technical guidance: Interfaces and platform rules can change. Check current official documentation for the software and platform versions you will use.
Practice before your first broadcast
This short rehearsal checks the essentials without requiring new equipment:
- Open OBS and run the Auto-Configuration Wizard.
- Create one scene and add the screen, game, or camera source you need.
- Speak into the microphone and check that the correct input registers on the OBS mixer meters.
- Play desktop audio if your broadcast needs it, and verify that its meter responds.
- Review the output settings for your intended destination.
- Make a short test recording or test stream, then check that the picture, audio, and layout are usable.

Check your existing audio before buying gear
OBS says desktop audio and microphone capture are enabled by default and explains how to check mixer meters and select devices manually. Try the microphone you already have before buying anything.
