Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPut live chat where the customer is most likely to need help. A website widget suits questions that arise while someone browses your public site, checkout, or help center. In-product chat suits questions that arise during onboarding, setup, or use of an app or software product. You can offer both if your team can staff them and keep conversations and handoffs coherent.
The choice is not simply where to put a chat bubble. Decide what kind of help the conversation should provide, what context agents need, and how the chat connects to self-service, tickets, and human support. Vendor documentation establishes that several placements and interaction types are possible; it does not establish that one placement universally improves conversion, satisfaction, or resolution time.

Website chat vs. in-product chat at a glance
| Decision | Website chat | In-product chat | What to decide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | Public pages, marketing pages, checkout, or a help center | Inside an app or software product, often during onboarding or a workflow | Where the question or obstacle actually arises |
| Typical user | A prospect, visitor, or customer who may not be signed in | An active user, often signed in or working within a product session | Whether support must be available before login or product access |
| Potentially useful context | The page or browsing visit; the visitor may not have an account yet | Product, account, or workflow context, depending on the integration | Which details agents receive, whether they are accurate, and whether they are appropriate to share |
| Discovery | Visitors need to notice or seek out the widget on the site | Users may find support in the product interface where they are working | Placement, accessibility, and behavior on mobile screens |
| Conversation continuity | A chat can begin before the user accesses the product | A conversation may be associated with an active product session | Whether conversations persist, how agents hand them off, and what happens if a user changes channels |
| Operational focus | May serve prospects and customers across public pages | Often serves active users and product workflows | Routing, staffing, support hours, escalation, and ownership |
| Security and privacy | Review allowed domains and widget security controls where supported | Review application identity, data sharing, and access controls | Whether implementation and data handling meet organizational requirements |
These are decision factors, not proof that either placement produces a particular business result. Available features depend on the vendor, edition, tenant, and configuration.

First, distinguish the chat widget from live-agent chat
A widget is the customer-facing interface embedded on a site or in a product. Live chat is one kind of interaction that interface may support. Depending on the service and setup, the same entry point may also offer self-service articles, collect a support request, or continue a conversation asynchronously rather than connecting the customer to an agent immediately.
#1 Best Overall
- Officially licensed by Sony
- Lightweight and comfortable for long gaming sessions
- Chat in crystal-clear digital wideband audio
- 3.5mm audio connection with inline audio controls
- Cable length 3.6ft
That distinction matters when comparing options: the useful question is not only “Where does the bubble go?” but also “What can a customer do after opening it?” LiveChat describes its website widget as the customer-facing interface and its separate Agent App as the place agents handle queries, configure the service, and monitor performance. Its product page also describes visitor details and routing as ways to give agents context: LiveChat website chat widget.
Choose placement by the moment help is needed
Use website chat for public-site questions
Website placement is a natural fit when questions arise before a person is actively using your product: a prospect comparing plans, a shopper checking a product or delivery detail, or a customer looking for help from a public support page. It can also provide an entry point for someone who cannot sign in or does not yet have an account.
Map the widget to the pages and support needs it is meant to serve. A presales conversation on a pricing page may need a different queue and ownership from an order question on a checkout or help-center page. Do not assume that the widget itself provides the context an agent needs; confirm which page, visitor, or account details are actually available to the team.

In-product placement is a natural fit when users need assistance while setting up an account, learning a feature, or completing a workflow. The user does not have to leave the product to find the support entry point. If the integration can pass appropriate product or account context, it may also help agents understand what the user is trying to do; what context is available depends on the platform and implementation.

- Compatible with the original Xbox One wireless controller and the new white Xbox wireless controller - no batteries needed
- Chat privately with your friends while gaming in crystal-clear digital audio
- Lightweight and comfortable for long gaming sessions
- Responsive microphone with adjustable boom
- Mute and volume controls at your fingertips
Consider whether the support entry point is accessible without obscuring essential controls, works on the product’s mobile interface, and is available to the user roles that need it. A chat placed only behind an authenticated session will not solve questions from people who cannot log in.
Offer both when the needs and operations justify it
Website and in-product placements are not inherently mutually exclusive. Zendesk documents embedding its messaging Web Widget on a website, help center, or mobile app. Atlassian documents a support website widget and embedding chat on other websites or inside apps. These vendor examples establish that multiple surfaces are possible, not that every account includes every capability.
Two entry points are useful only if customers can reach the right team and agents can manage the resulting work. Define whether conversations share an inbox, how identity is matched across surfaces, what happens when a chat becomes a ticket, and who owns follow-up. If those processes are unclear, adding another bubble can create fragmented support rather than a smoother path.
Decide what the conversation should do
Set the intended job before choosing a placement. A single service may support several goals, but each one affects where the entry point belongs and what the team needs behind it.

- Compatible with PS4 controllers
- Flexible mic for speaking comfort.
- Adjustable headband and cushioned ear pads.
- Connects directly to the 3.5mm jack
- Approx. 4 ft cable
- Presales: Help a visitor understand an offer or choose an appropriate next step; website pages may be the point of need.
- Customer support: Help with an account, order, or service issue; decide whether customers should start from the public help center, a signed-in area, or both.
- Onboarding: Answer setup questions as users begin; an in-product entry point may be closer to the task.
- In-workflow assistance: Help users resolve a blocker without losing their place in the app.
- Mixed support: If more than one group will use chat, specify routing, hours, escalation, and ownership for each type of request.
Then define what happens when a live agent is not immediately available. A messaging widget may combine human interactions with self-service, ticket creation, persistent conversations, and email notifications. Zendesk documents these capabilities for its messaging Web Widget; their availability and exact behavior depend on the relevant setup. A chat button should not imply real-time human coverage if the actual path is a request for later follow-up.
Check context, continuity, and routing
Give agents useful and appropriate context
List the information an agent needs to resolve the common request types: for example, the page a visitor was viewing, the user’s account identity, or the relevant product area. For each item, establish whether the platform provides it, whether your integration must pass it, and whether the team should see it. Avoid collecting or exposing information simply because it is technically available.
Define the path from chat to resolution
Document what happens if a request needs another team, cannot be handled in chat, or arrives outside staffed hours. Decide whether the conversation can continue later, become a ticket, or receive an email notification. Customers should not have to explain the same issue from scratch after a handoff; determine what conversation history and context remain available to the next person.
Route by purpose, not just by channel
If one widget serves sales and support, decide how those conversations reach the correct queue. If website and in-product chat have different owners, make that distinction explicit in routing and reporting. Staff coverage should match the promise presented to customers, including any stated hours and expected response path.

Plan the launch and security checks
Implementation depends on the product and edition, so there is no universal click-by-click setup path. Before launch, work through these decisions with the people who own support, the website or app, and security:
- Confirm the surface and eligibility. Check that the selected service supports the intended website, help-center, or app placement in your edition and tenant configuration. Vendor documentation distinguishes widget types and setup paths; a feature described for a product is not proof that it is enabled on your account.
- Choose where the widget appears. Select the pages or product areas that match the intended support purpose. Check how it behaves on desktop and mobile and whether users can reach it using the interface’s accessibility features.
- Configure its customer-facing experience. Review appearance and any forms or introductory prompts. Ask only for information needed to route or answer the request, and make the next step clear if an agent is not available.
- Set security and deployment scope. Review supported security controls and allowed domains for website deployment. For in-product use, verify application identity, access, and the information passed to the chat service. Zendesk’s deployment documentation identifies configuration, forms, security settings, and website or help-center installation as relevant setup areas.
- Configure routing and escalation. Assign queues or owners, define support hours, and specify what happens when a request needs a ticket, another team, or follow-up outside live coverage.
- Test representative journeys. Test a prospect on a public page, a signed-in user in the product, a mobile user if supported, and a request that needs escalation. Confirm that agents receive only the intended context and can see the conversation history needed to continue it.
- Monitor after release. Make sure agents know which app or workspace handles conversations, how to configure the service, and how to monitor performance. LiveChat’s Manager’s Handbook distinguishes the customer-facing widget from the Agent App used for handling queries and monitoring.
Account for vendor and edition differences
Do not infer feature availability from a product category or a vendor’s general description. Zendesk’s documentation describes website, help-center, and mobile-app embedding for its messaging Web Widget, while its documentation also distinguishes widget types and configuration routes. Atlassian says chat can appear on a support website or be embedded on a website or inside apps, but human live chat depends on edition and tenant setup.
Lifecycle details can also change. Salesforce Help described Legacy Chat as scheduled for retirement on February 14, 2026, and pointed customers toward Enhanced Chat. That date has passed; customers using Salesforce should consult current migration guidance rather than treating the earlier schedule as a statement of present availability.
How to choose: a practical decision sequence
- Locate the point of need. If users ask before entering or signing into the product, prioritize a public website or help-center entry point. If they get stuck while using the product, prioritize an in-product entry point.
- Separate audiences and jobs. Identify which requests come from prospects, customers, or active users, and whether those requests require different teams or support hours.
- Check context needs. Specify what agents need to see, what the platform actually supplies, and what should remain private or unavailable.
- Design the fallback. Decide what users can do when an agent is busy or offline, and how chat becomes a ticket or continues later.
- Validate the actual deployment. Confirm the correct widget, product edition, tenant configuration, supported surfaces, and security controls for your organization.
- Add a second placement only for a distinct need. Use both surfaces when they serve meaningful points of need and the team can route, staff, and follow up on both coherently.
There is no evidence in the cited vendor documentation that one placement is universally better for conversion, satisfaction, or resolution speed. Choose based on where customers need assistance and whether your support operation can deliver the promised response there.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should live chat be on my website or in my app?
Use website chat for help needed while browsing public pages or a help center, and in-product chat for help needed during onboarding or product use. The right choice depends on where the user encounters the question and what context the agent needs.
Can we offer live chat on both our website and in our app?
Yes, some platforms support multiple surfaces. Zendesk documents its messaging Web Widget for a website, help center, or mobile app, and Atlassian documents website and in-app placements. Availability depends on the product, edition, tenant, and configuration.
Is a chat widget the same thing as live-agent chat?
No. The widget is the interface; live-agent chat is one possible interaction. A widget may also provide self-service content, accept a ticket, or support a conversation that continues asynchronously.
What should agents see when a user starts a chat?
Only the context needed to handle the request, such as relevant page or product-area information and, where appropriate, account identity. Confirm what the platform actually passes to agents and whether that data is appropriate to expose.
