Lithiation is the process by which lithium enters and is stored in an electrode material. It is more than ions moving into an unchanged solid: lithium transport, electron transfer, and changes to the material’s structure are linked. The exact pathway depends on the electrode material, particle size, and phases involved, so there is no single mechanism that describes every lithium-ion battery.
What happens during lithiation?
During normal battery operation, lithium ions move between the positive and negative electrodes through the electrolyte. At an electrode, lithium is taken up by the host material during lithiation and released during delithiation. The host’s composition and structure change as lithium is stored or removed, while electrons move through the external circuit to balance the electrochemical reaction.

In a conventional lithium-ion cell, charging generally lithiates the negative electrode and delithiates the positive electrode; discharge reverses those directions. Thus, “lithiation” describes what happens at a particular electrode, not the direction of every reaction throughout the cell at once. The 2017 review “Atomic-Scale Structure-Property Relationships in Lithium Ion Battery Electrode Materials” in Annual Review of Materials Research discusses how transport, storage, structural change, and ion–electron interactions together shape electrode behavior.

Some electrode materials accommodate lithium within a host structure in an insertion- or intercalation-like process. In others, lithiation involves a phase change or more substantial structural evolution. Real materials can exhibit combinations of these behaviors. The relevant pathway is shaped by the host chemistry, lithium diffusion routes, particle size, and the phases present as the reaction proceeds.

A 2019 review of in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies, “In situ transmission electron microscopy observations of rechargeable lithium ion batteries” in Nano Energy, emphasizes that lithiation and delithiation mechanisms are material-specific, size-dependent, and phase-governed. These are useful variables for interpreting a particular experiment, not a universal recipe that predicts every electrode’s response.
LiFePO4 as a material-specific example
For lithium iron phosphate, LiFePO4, researchers examine lithium diffusion pathways in LixFePO4 alongside phase transitions. A 2014 review in RSC Advances, “Mechanism studies of LiFePO4 cathode material: lithiation/delithiation process, electrochemical modification and synthetic reaction,” treats those features as central to understanding this cathode’s lithiation and delithiation. Its behavior illustrates why an explanation should begin with the specific host material rather than assume that all electrodes follow the same pathway.

How researchers observe lithiation
In situ TEM lets researchers observe structural evolution in an electrode while lithiation or delithiation is taking place under a particular experimental setup. High-spatial-resolution structural information can help connect changes in a material to lithium transport and ion–electron interactions. Such observations can also help researchers investigate fracture and crack formation, which are relevant to mechanical degradation over repeated cycling.
An image or movie captures a particular material under particular experimental conditions; it does not establish a universal pathway. The 2019 in situ TEM review discusses the method as a way to study electrode evolution and degradation mechanisms, not as evidence that every lithiation event causes cracking. The result must be interpreted in the context of the material, particle size, phase behavior, and setup. The available evidence here does not establish one universal instrument protocol or a consumer equipment recommendation.

How lithiation relates to battery performance and degradation
Lithiation is a normal part of battery operation; degradation is not one single lithiation mechanism. A 2024 review, “Degradation Processes in Current Commercialized Li-Ion Batteries and Strategies to Mitigate Them,” in Annual Review of Materials Research groups degradation into three broad loss modes:
| Loss mode | What is lost or degraded |
|---|---|
| Loss of lithium inventory (LLI) | Lithium becomes unavailable for the cell’s reversible cycling. |
| Positive-electrode active-material loss or degradation | The positive electrode loses usable active material or its ability to function as intended. |
| Negative-electrode active-material loss or degradation | The negative electrode loses usable active material or its ability to function as intended. |
This distinction matters: lithium becoming unavailable is different from either electrode losing or degrading active material. Structural evolution and mechanical damage can be part of the picture, but lithiation alone should not be treated as the sole cause of battery aging.

Prelithiation is a separate manufacturing strategy
Prelithiation deliberately adds lithium to an electrode or cell to compensate for irreversible lithium consumption, including losses early in a cell’s life. It is not another name for the routine lithiation that occurs as a working battery charges and discharges.

| Approach | How it is characterized | Challenges identified in the review |
|---|---|---|
| Direct-contact | Lithium is introduced through direct contact with the electrode. | Uniformity and kinetic control can be difficult. |
| Electrochemical | Lithium is introduced through an electrochemical process. | Electrolyte stability and integration with manufacturing processes can be challenging. |
| Chemical | A chemical route supplies lithium to the electrode. | Some products can be sensitive to air or moisture, and controlling the degree of prelithiation can be difficult. |
A separate 2026 review in Advanced Materials, “Prelithiation for Lithium-Ion Batteries: Material and Process Innovations,” frames the choice of approach in terms of material properties, safety, and scalability, and discusses quantitative assessment at cell and system levels. It does not provide a specific numerical result suitable for quoting here. These reviews describe an active manufacturing topic, not a single established route that can be assumed to fit every cell design.
Quick Recap
What to keep in mind
- Lithiation stores lithium in an electrode host and can change that host’s structure.
- The reaction pathway depends on the material, particle size, and phases involved.
- In situ TEM can reveal structural evolution as it occurs, but its observations are specific to the experiment.
- Battery degradation includes lithium-inventory loss as well as loss or degradation of active material in either electrode.
- Prelithiation is a deliberate lithium-compensation step, distinct from normal cell cycling.
