A liquid staking token (LST) is a transferable receipt for assets pooled and staked through a protocol. It can let you use a token associated with staked ETH while the pool handles validator operations—but it is not ETH itself, does not give you control of a validator, and is not guaranteed to trade at the value of the ETH behind it.
What is a liquid staking token?
On Ethereum, a staking pool can combine users’ ETH, allocate it to validators run by node operators, and issue receipt tokens to depositors. Ethereum.org describes most such tokens as ERC-20 claims associated with staked ETH and rewards. The token represents a claim under the pool’s rules; it is not the validator deposit itself, and holding it does not mean you control the validator or its withdrawal credentials. Ethereum.org’s pooled staking overview explains the distinction.

This article focuses on transparent, on-chain Ethereum pools. Some exchange or app products marketed as “staking” are custodial yield programs and may not stake assets through validators at all. Check what the product actually does and who controls the assets before treating it as an LST.
How does liquid staking work?
- You deposit ETH into a pool. The pool’s contracts and operating rules govern how deposits are handled; the provider may allocate them to one or more node operators.
- The pool issues a receipt token. You hold the LST in a wallet or use it elsewhere, subject to the token’s supported networks and applications.
- Validators perform staking. Their performance, penalties, and pool fees affect the value attributable to token holders under that protocol’s rules.
- Rewards are reflected in one of two common ways. A rebasing token changes your token balance as rewards accrue. An exchange-rate token keeps your balance fixed while the amount of ETH redeemable per token grows. Ethereum.org uses stETH and rETH, respectively, as examples. Rewards are net of the pool’s fee; neither accounting model is inherently safer or more profitable.
- You exit by selling or requesting redemption. Selling transfers the token to a buyer at the available market price. Protocol redemption follows a separate process and may involve a queue or waiting period.
Can stETH depeg from ETH?
Yes. A market price is set by buyers and sellers, so stETH—or another LST—can trade below the value of the ETH associated with it. If you sell during a period of stress or thin liquidity, you may realize that discount. A market sale is not the same as redeeming through the protocol, and redemption may be delayed by provider procedures or constrained withdrawal throughput. Ethereum.org discusses these general pooled-staking trade-offs in its pooled staking guidance; queue and market conditions change over time.

“Liquid” means the token may be transferable or usable in other applications; it does not promise an immediate exit at par. Before relying on an LST’s price or redemption value, check its current market depth and price relative to ETH, as well as the provider’s live unstaking terms.
What risks should you check?
- Market liquidity and price deviation: Review trading depth and the LST/ETH price on the venue you would actually use. A sale below backing value can lock in a loss relative to that value.
- Redemption and queue mechanics: Read the provider’s current unstaking steps, including any request and claim stages, fees, queue behavior, and expected timing. Ethereum withdrawal throughput is constrained, and providers handle requests differently. See Ethereum.org’s withdrawal overview.
- Validator operations: Downtime can reduce rewards, while slashing can impose penalties. Check how the pool chooses and distributes operators, whether failures could be correlated, and how its rules pass penalties through to holders.
- Contracts and governance: Review contract transparency, audits, upgrade controls, governance powers, and who can change fees or operators. An audit can reduce uncertainty; it cannot make a contract risk-free.
- Composability: Lending, liquidity pools, and other DeFi uses add the application’s own contract, liquidity, and liquidation risks. If you borrow against an LST, a price decline may create liquidation exposure even if the underlying pool continues operating.
- Custody and product identity: A self-custodied on-chain token is different from an exchange’s custodial “earn” product. Confirm who controls the assets and whether returns actually come from validation.
These risks extend beyond Ethereum consensus itself: token holders also depend on the pool’s contracts, governance, and operators. The details vary by protocol and chain, so do not assume an Ethereum pool’s terms apply elsewhere.

How do you unstake ETH from an LST?
There is no single procedure that applies to every token. First decide whether you mean selling the token or redeeming it through its protocol. A sale may be faster when markets are liquid, but the execution price can differ from the value of the ETH associated with the token. Redemption follows the provider’s own process and may require waiting.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Identify the exact token and network. Confirm the contract and chain in your wallet; similarly named or wrapped tokens may have different redemption routes.
- Read the provider’s current exit instructions. Check whether redemption requires submitting a request, waiting in a queue, then claiming ETH, and note any fees and conditions.
- Choose the exit route. Compare a market sale’s available price and liquidity with protocol redemption’s terms and timing.
- Complete the route through the correct interface. For a sale, use a venue that supports that token and network. For redemption, follow the provider’s documented steps and verify transaction details before signing.
- Track any pending request. If the protocol uses separate request and claim stages, monitor its official status information and claim only when eligible.
Pool holders generally rely on provider-specific contracts and operators to handle withdrawal processing; they do not personally perform the validator withdrawal. Ethereum.org’s withdrawal guidance describes the Ethereum-level process, while the pool determines how a holder’s request is handled.

How to compare liquid staking protocols
Compare protocols on the same practical questions rather than assuming all LSTs work alike:
- Does rewards accounting rebase the token balance or change its exchange rate?
- What is the redemption route, and what are the current queue conditions?
- What are the fees, contract upgrade controls, and governance powers?
- How are operators selected and distributed, and how permissioned is the operator set?
- How deep is token liquidity, and how closely has its market price tracked ETH?
There is no universal best model in these categories; suitability depends on the terms and risks you are willing to accept. Protocol conditions, token prices, and operator sets can change, so check current official documentation and market information before acting.

Legal and tax treatment
The legal or tax treatment of LSTs depends on jurisdiction, product structure, and current rules. A submission to the SEC by Lido Labs Foundation represents the submitter’s position, not an SEC finding or binding legal determination. Do not treat a general explanation of liquid staking as jurisdiction-specific legal or tax advice.
