zram can help a low-memory Linux laptop when swapped pages compress well and avoiding some storage I/O matters. It stores compressed swap data in RAM, rather than adding physical memory. Disk-backed swap provides storage-backed space; zswap is a compressed cache used alongside backing swap. None is a universal speed winner: the useful choice depends on the laptop’s workload, CPU headroom, storage, and how well its data compresses.
What swap, zram, and zswap do
Swap: storage-backed space for pages
Swap is an area the system can use for memory pages that are not currently active in RAM. It may be a disk partition or a file. Disk-backed swap gives the system storage capacity beyond the memory currently available, but using it involves the storage device.

zram: compressed swap kept in RAM
zram creates a RAM-backed block device. The Linux kernel documentation explains that pages written to it are compressed and stored in memory. The device can be activated as swap, so the system can move pages to it without writing those pages directly to disk.
That does not make zram extra physical RAM. Compression can make some data occupy less memory, but the compressed pages still use RAM and compression consumes CPU time. The amount of memory saved depends on the data; incompressible pages limit the benefit.

zswap: a compressed cache with backing swap
zswap is not another name for zram. The Linux kernel describes it as a lightweight compressed cache for swap pages. It keeps some pages in a dynamically allocated compressed-memory pool and can evict pages to a backing swap device when that pool reaches its limit. Its design trades CPU cycles for the possibility of reducing swap I/O; whether it is enabled depends on the kernel build and configuration.
zram vs disk-backed swap and zswap
| Question | zram | Disk-backed swap / zswap |
|---|---|---|
| Where does swapped data go? | Compressed pages are held in RAM on a RAM-backed block device. | Disk-backed swap uses a storage area. zswap caches some swap pages in compressed RAM and can evict them to backing swap. |
| How does it affect memory? | Its actual memory use depends on the stored data and compression. The kernel exposes original data size, compressed data size, total memory allocated, and incompressible-page counts as distinct statistics. | zswap uses a dynamically allocated memory pool; pages may be written to backing swap when the pool reaches its limit. |
| What is the tradeoff? | Compression uses CPU and can keep some swapped data off storage. | Disk-backed swap supplies storage-backed capacity. zswap uses CPU to compress cached pages and can reduce some swap I/O, while retaining backing swap as part of its design. |
| What determines whether it fits? | Page compressibility, memory pressure, and available CPU capacity. | Storage behavior, memory pressure, workload, and—when used—zswap configuration. |
These options address different constraints rather than offering interchangeable amounts of memory. zram keeps compressed swap data in RAM; disk-backed swap provides storage-backed space; zswap caches some pages in compressed RAM while retaining backing swap. The kernel documentation describes how they work, but does not establish a universal laptop-performance winner.

How to tell whether zram helps your laptop
Judge the setup on the laptop and workload that matter to you, rather than assuming that enabling zram guarantees a speedup. The kernel’s zram statistics let you compare the original data size, compressed data size, total memory allocated, and number of incompressible pages. Those figures help show whether compression is saving much memory, but responsiveness also depends on CPU cost, storage activity, and the workload.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Check what is already active. Identify the system’s existing swap areas and zram configuration before adding another setup; distributions do not all enable or configure them the same way.
- Observe ordinary use. Consider whether the laptop is under memory pressure, whether CPU work from compression is a concern, and whether storage activity is a bottleneck.
- Look at zram’s actual statistics. Compare logical data size with compressed size and total allocated memory, and check the incompressible-page count rather than treating the device’s nominal size as memory reserved or guaranteed available.
- Compare responsiveness under the same workload. The reviewed kernel and distribution documentation does not provide controlled laptop benchmarks, a universal compression ratio, or a guaranteed speedup.
Configuration depends on the distribution
Linux kernel documentation describes configuring zram through its interfaces, including sysfs and zramctl, and shows that a zram device can be set up and activated as swap. Available compression algorithms can be checked through the device interface. The exact management method and whether zram or zswap is already enabled depend on the distribution and kernel configuration.

Ubuntu Noble’s systemd-zram-generator example
The Ubuntu Noble manual for systemd-zram-generator version 1.1.2-3 says its default configuration specifies no devices. For a configured device, the manual documents min(ram / 2, 4096) as the default zram-size= formula, where ram means usable memory and the expression follows the manual’s supported syntax. It also documents a default swap priority of 100 for the generator, with higher values receiving higher priority. These are settings documented for that generator and distribution version, not general Linux defaults or performance findings.
Optional writeback for incompressible pages
The same manual documents an optional writeback-device= for writing incompressible pages to a block device under memory pressure. If it is not set, those pages remain in RAM. This is a configuration option, not a requirement for using zram.

Does zram make a laptop faster?
It can improve responsiveness in a particular workload if compression lets the system keep useful swapped data in memory and avoid some storage I/O. It can also spend CPU time compressing data, and pages that do not compress well may produce little memory saving. The outcome depends on the laptop’s hardware, workload, and current swap configuration; no fixed speedup or compression ratio can be promised from the documented mechanisms alone.
Recommended Free Tools
If the laptop regularly runs short of memory, zram changes how some swap data is stored; it does not create physical RAM. Whether a memory upgrade is possible or appropriate depends on the exact laptop model and its compatibility details.
