The best Linux screenshot method depends on your desktop environment and display session. KDE Plasma users should start with Spectacle; it is integrated, supports common capture modes and has documented keyboard shortcuts. GNOME and other Wayland users should first use the desktop’s built-in screenshot action, then consider Flameshot if they need annotation or custom shortcuts. Always record whether you are running Wayland or X11, because portal permissions and capture support differ.
Choose the option that matches your Linux desktop
| Situation | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| KDE Plasma | Spectacle | Integrated shortcuts, save settings and capture modes. |
| GNOME or Ubuntu on Wayland | Built-in screenshot action | Uses the desktop’s supported portal and compositor path. |
| Need arrows, highlights or quick edits | Flameshot | Provides in-app editing and configurable shortcuts. |
| Scripted or repeatable captures | Spectacle command line or documented Flameshot commands | Supports automation, but flags must match the installed version. |
Before troubleshooting, identify your session. In a terminal, run echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE. The result is normally wayland or x11. Also note your desktop (for example, KDE Plasma or GNOME), monitor layout and where your screenshot is being saved.
KDE Plasma: use Spectacle first
KDE’s built-in screenshot utility is Spectacle. KDE documents that pressing the Print Screen key—often labeled PrtSc or PrtScn—launches Spectacle. You can also open it from the application launcher, KRunner or a terminal.
Spectacle keyboard shortcuts
| Shortcut | Capture |
|---|---|
| Print Screen | Launch Spectacle. |
| Meta + Print Screen | Active window. |
| Shift + Print Screen | Entire desktop across all monitors. |
| Meta + Shift + Print Screen | Rectangular region. |
Meta is usually the Windows-logo key. If a laptop has no dedicated Print Screen key, use the keyboard’s documented function-layer combination or assign a custom shortcut in KDE’s keyboard settings.
#1 Best Overall
Capture a full screen, monitor, window or region
Spectacle supports full-screen capture across monitors, the current screen, a selected window and a rectangular area. In its interface, choose the capture scope before pressing the capture button. You can enable or disable the pointer and window decorations, and set a delay or on-click capture. A delay is useful for opening a menu or positioning a tooltip; on-click capture lets you trigger the shot after arranging the screen.
Save, copy and automate
After capture, Spectacle can save the image using your configured location and filename pattern or copy it to the clipboard for pasting into a ticket, chat or editor. For repeatable jobs, launch Spectacle from a terminal and use its command-line and background options. Because command-line flags can change between distributions and installed versions, check the local help output (for example, spectacle --help) and test one file before putting a command in a script.
GNOME and other Wayland desktops
On GNOME, start with the desktop’s built-in screenshot action. Wayland deliberately places screen capture behind desktop portals and compositor policy rather than allowing every application unrestricted access. This usually gives the most predictable result for the desktop you are using.
Selecting an area or window
Open the GNOME screenshot interface from its normal keyboard shortcut or system menu, then choose the screen, window or selection mode offered by your version. Select the rectangle, confirm the capture and check the destination shown by the desktop. Labels and shortcut defaults vary by distribution and GNOME release, so document the exact action when writing team instructions.
When a Wayland capture fails
If a third-party application cannot capture on GNOME or Ubuntu, check that an xdg-desktop-portal implementation and the desktop’s portal backend are installed and running. Log out and back in after changing portal packages. Flameshot’s Wayland guidance specifically calls out granting screenshot permission through the portal and provides separate GNOME and KDE Wayland troubleshooting. A native capture bypass offered by Flameshot applies to X11 only; it is ignored on Wayland.
Flameshot: editing and custom workflows
Flameshot is a third-party utility aimed at capturing and editing in one step. Its selection interface can add annotations such as arrows, boxes and highlights before you save or copy the result. It also supports configurable shortcuts, full-screen saving, clipboard output, delayed captures and history-oriented workflows.
Install and bind a shortcut
Install Flameshot using your distribution’s package manager, then launch it from the application menu. Open its configuration and assign a shortcut for interactive capture, full-screen save or clipboard capture as needed. Flameshot’s Linux key-binding documentation notes that Print Screen may require manual setup rather than working immediately.
Avoid KDE shortcut collisions
On KDE, Spectacle and Flameshot can claim the same Print Screen combinations. If the key starts the wrong program—or both programs react—open KDE’s global shortcut settings, find Spectacle’s conflicting entries and disable or remap them before importing Flameshot bindings. Keep one clear owner for each key combination and test active-window, full-screen and region actions separately.

Wayland support is compositor-dependent
Flameshot labels GNOME Wayland and Plasma Wayland support as experimental. That does not mean every Wayland installation fails, but it does mean you should test your exact compositor, portal packages and permission flow before standardizing on it. For an organization, the built-in desktop tool is often easier to support when annotation is not required.
How to take a selected-area screenshot
- Identify the session: run
echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPEand note Wayland or X11. - Use the integrated path first: on KDE, press
Meta+Shift+Print Screenfor a rectangular region; on GNOME, open its screenshot interface and select the area mode. - Drag the rectangle: include the complete UI state you need, leaving out passwords and unrelated personal data.
- Choose output: save to a known folder or copy to the clipboard, then verify the file opens and has the expected dimensions.
- If using Flameshot: invoke its interactive shortcut, draw the region, annotate if needed, and choose save or clipboard from the on-screen controls.
Full-screen, current-screen, window and multi-monitor capture
- All monitors: Spectacle’s full-desktop action captures the entire desktop spanning connected displays.
- Current screen: choose the monitor containing the target application when you do not want neighboring displays included.
- Active window: use Spectacle’s active-window shortcut or the equivalent window mode in your desktop tool.
- Menus and transient UI: set a delay or use on-click capture so the menu remains open while the image is taken.
- Pointer and decorations: enable the cursor when a support report needs to show position; disable it for clean documentation. Window borders and title bars are separate options in Spectacle.
Automation and reproducible documentation
For a team, a screenshot instruction should state five things: desktop environment, Wayland or X11, shortcut or command, capture scope and output destination. This prevents a KDE/X11 procedure from being copied into GNOME/Wayland without the required portal step.
Spectacle’s command-line interface can run in background mode, which is useful for scripts and scheduled captures. Start with the help text from the installed package, specify an explicit output path, and check the exit status and resulting file. Flameshot also documents command forms for full-screen, clipboard and delayed workflows; verify option names against your installed release rather than copying flags blindly between distributions.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a URL rendered rather than your local desktop, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts one GET request and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing state in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

Troubleshooting checklist
Print Screen does nothing
- Confirm the key is producing a key event and that another utility has not claimed it.
- On KDE, check Global Shortcuts for Spectacle conflicts.
- On Flameshot, create the binding manually; its documentation says Print Screen is not configured out of the box on Linux.
The wrong application opens
Two screenshot tools are probably assigned to the same combination. Remove one binding or give each tool distinct keys, then log out and in if your desktop does not immediately reload shortcuts.
The image is black, incomplete or never appears
- Check whether the session is Wayland and whether the portal backend is running.
- On GNOME or Ubuntu, follow the portal-permission path before changing application flags.
- On X11, test the desktop tool first; on minimal window managers, ensure a portal backend implementing the screenshot interface is available when the application requires it.
Menus disappear before capture
Use Spectacle’s delay or on-click mode, or Flameshot’s delayed workflow. Arrange the menu during the countdown and avoid moving the pointer into the capture area unless it is intentionally included.
