Base M4 support has some early platform work, but many essential components—including graphics and laptop peripherals—remain marked “TBA” or “WIP.” M4 Pro and M4 Max device trees are still “WIP.” So this is a question of development status, not a supported installation choice.
Linux on an M4 Mac and Asahi Linux are not competing options
Asahi Linux is the project developing Linux support for Apple Silicon; it is not just the name of a single distribution. Its work includes hardware support, drivers and tools intended to benefit upstream Linux projects. Fedora Asahi Remix is the project’s flagship distribution and a reference for other distributions. Can you install Asahi Linux on an M4 Mac?
Not through an official Asahi installer, according to the feature matrix dated here as of October 4, 2026. It lists installer status as “no” across the M4, M4 Pro and M4 Max devices covered. A device-tree status or progress on an individual component is not the same thing as an installable release.

That makes installability the first decision point: if you need a supported setup for daily work, the current matrix does not establish one for these M4 models. Do not treat development-status entries as installation instructions or as a promise of when an installer will arrive. What the Asahi status labels mean
The matrix uses different labels to distinguish upstream Linux support from project-specific progress. They describe feature status; they do not independently confirm that a particular Mac can be installed and used as a complete system.

- A kernel-release label means the feature is upstream as of that kernel release.
- “linux-asahi (kernel release)” means the feature is stable and usable in linux-asahi, with upstreaming expected by the stated release.
- “linux-asahi” means the feature is mostly stable and available in Fedora Asahi Remix and linux-asahi.
- “WIP” means development is active, but the feature is not ready for wider testing or distribution.
- “TBA” means active work is not currently being undertaken. The project gives no estimate for features that are not ready.
These distinctions matter because the base M4 device tree is listed as “linux-asahi (7.4),” while many underlying hardware blocks remain “TBA” or “WIP.” A device-tree entry is not a blanket statement that the hardware is ready.
Base M4: early platform work, but major gaps
The matrix covers shared system-on-chip features separately from components specific to each Mac model. Shared blocks can affect several devices using the same chip family; individual peripherals still vary by model.

For the base M4, the device tree is marked “linux-asahi (7.4).” AICv3, watchdog, I²C and GPIO also carry “linux-asahi (7.4)” status. Video decoding and NVMe are marked “WIP.” The matrix marks these other base-M4 features “TBA”:
- GPU and DART
- PCIe, Thunderbolt, USB 2 and USB 3 on Thunderbolt ports, and DisplayPort Alt Mode
- CPU frequency and idle management, and suspend or sleep
- Video encoding and ProRes
- USB Power Delivery, audio-related MCA, SPI, SMC and Neural Engine
This status mix does not establish a complete desktop experience. In particular, the GPU and external-display pathways are not listed as ready, and several connectivity and power-management components remain “TBA.” M4 Series Feature Support

Base M4 Mac models: what the matrix says
The official device list helps distinguish systems that may be casually grouped together as “an M4 Mac.” For example, it identifies the M4 Mac mini as Mac16,10, the 14-inch M4 MacBook Pro as Mac16,1, and the 13- and 15-inch M4 MacBook Airs as Mac16,12 and Mac16,13. Asahi device list

The table reflects the feature matrix’s model-specific entries, not a hands-on test. It shows why a partially progressed device tree should not be mistaken for a ready laptop: several functions most people rely on in daily use are still listed as “TBA.”

M4 Pro and M4 Max: do not assume base-M4 status carries over
The matrix covers the M4 Pro Mac mini, M4 Max Mac Studio, and 14- and 16-inch M4 Pro/Max MacBook Pro models. For these systems, installer status is “no” and the device tree is “WIP.” Many device-specific entries—including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, HDMI and audio, plus laptop display and keyboard or touchpad functions—are “TBA.”
The matrix also notes that many peripherals depend on DART and PCIe support, which are “TBA” for M4 Pro/Max. As a result, base M4 progress should not be used as a proxy for Pro or Max readiness. Check the exact chip tier and model rather than relying on the label “M4 Mac.” M4 Series Feature Support
How to judge whether M4 Linux is ready for your use
If you are evaluating an M4 Mac specifically for Linux, check the same practical categories you would assess on any Linux machine. In the current Asahi matrix, the decisive issue is that there is no installer listed; the remaining categories indicate the extent of development, not a turnkey system.
- Installation: Is an installer listed for the exact model?
- Graphics and displays: Are GPU acceleration and the built-in or external display paths supported?
- Connectivity: Are Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB, Thunderbolt and other ports usable?
- Laptop basics: Are the keyboard, touchpad, brightness controls and battery reporting ready?
- Power and peripherals: Are sleep, audio, microphones and camera supported?
- Support maturity: Is a feature upstream, stable in a project build, or still “WIP” or “TBA”?
For comparison with another Linux-capable computer, use its own current official documentation for these same categories. The M4 matrix does not establish the specifications or support status of a different machine.
Where to verify status before choosing a machine
Asahi directs end users to its feature-support pages for current device and component status. Start with the M4 matrix, then use the device list to confirm the exact system identifier. Because installer availability and feature states can change, check the live pages close to the time you plan to act rather than treating a dated status as permanent.
