Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) 7 “Gigi” is Linux Mint’s Debian-based edition. It keeps the Mint desktop experience—officially, the Cinnamon edition—while Debian 13 “Trixie” supplies the package base instead of Ubuntu. Linux Mint released LMDE 7 on October 14, 2025 and identifies it as an LTS release, although the published release notes do not state an exact support end date.
What LMDE is
LMDE stands for Linux Mint Debian Edition. The project describes it as an effort to keep Linux Mint as similar as possible to its usual experience without using Ubuntu: “The package base is provided by Debian instead.” Linux Mint also says the project helps ensure that Mint software can work outside an Ubuntu-based system.

Download and verify the Cinnamon image
Linux Mint lists the LMDE 7 Cinnamon download as a 3 GB ISO, with direct and torrent options. Download it from Linux Mint’s official LMDE page or one of the mirrors listed there. The project explicitly recommends checking both the image’s integrity and authenticity because a malicious or altered image can be made to look legitimate.

- Download the LMDE 7 Cinnamon ISO from the official page or its listed mirror.
- Use Linux Mint’s linked verification procedure and signed checksums to check that the file is complete and authentic.
- Create installation media on a USB flash drive if you are installing on physical hardware. Linux Mint does not specify a minimum capacity or endorse a particular brand, so choose media that can hold the 3 GB image plus the installer’s required overhead.
- Boot the target computer from that media and start the installer.
Installation details that can prevent surprises
Manual partitioning and swap
In manual-partitioning mode, the LMDE 7 installer automounts all swap partitions and adds them to /etc/fstab. Review the proposed layout before committing changes, particularly on systems with more than one swap partition.
Existing LVM installations
If you want to install onto an existing LVM partition, remove that partition from the LVM volumes and groups to which it belongs before starting the installation. Otherwise the installer may not be able to use the space as intended.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to upgrade from LMDE 6 to LMDE 7
Linux Mint describes this as a major upgrade that can take several hours. Bring LMDE 6 fully up to date first and prepare system snapshots so you have a rollback path. A separate copy of personal files on an external drive or SSD is optional protection for those files; it is not the same thing as a system snapshot.
Best Value
- Live Boot: Simply plug the USB drive into your computer, select the USB drive as your boot device, and experience Linux Mint without installation. This allows you to test the OS and its features before making any changes to your system.
- Install Option: Once you've tested and decided to keep Linux Mint, you can easily install it on your computer directly from the USB drive.
- Pre-installed software like LibreOffice for office tasks, a capable web browser (Firefox), email client (Thunderbird), and multimedia tools. This minimizes the need for additional downloads, saving you time and effort.
- Resource Efficiency: Designed to run efficiently on a variety of hardware configurations. It demands fewer system resources compared to some other operating systems, making it an excellent choice for older computers or devices with limited hardware specifications.
- Compatible with PC/Laptop/Desktop brands - Dell, HP, Sony, Lenovo, Samsung, Acer, Toshiba & more. Minimum system requirements 4 GB RAM Dual-Core Processor (2 GHz) 20 GB of free disk space
Before starting
- Install all available LMDE 6 updates.
- Create and verify system snapshots.
- Ensure the computer will remain powered and connected for the duration of the upgrade.
- Confirm that the installation is 64-bit. A 32-bit LMDE 6 installation cannot be upgraded to LMDE 7 because LMDE 7 is 64-bit only.
Run the Mint upgrade tool
- Open a terminal and refresh package information:
apt update - Install the upgrade utility:
apt install mintupgrade - Start the upgrade assistant with administrative privileges:
sudo mintupgrade - Follow every prompt from the tool. Do not interrupt it while packages are being changed.
- After the upgrade completes successfully, remove the temporary upgrade utility as directed by Linux Mint, then reboot.
The process leaves temporary files behind; the official instructions explain where to clean them. Linux Mint also points users to section 5.1.6 of Debian 13’s release notes for additional upgrade-related information.
LMDE versus Ubuntu-based Linux Mint
| Question | LMDE | Ubuntu-based Linux Mint |
|---|---|---|
| Package base | Debian (LMDE 7 uses Debian 13 “Trixie”) | Ubuntu |
| Desktop experience | Aims to remain as similar as possible to Linux Mint | Linux Mint’s standard editions |
| Project purpose | Provide a Mint-like system without Ubuntu and help Mint software work beyond Ubuntu | Use Ubuntu as the underlying distribution |
| Documented performance or hardware advantage | Not established by the cited official material | Not established by the cited official material |
Choose between them primarily by the package base and project direction you want. The available official documentation does not support a blanket claim that one is faster, more compatible or more stable on every computer.
Will there be an LMDE MATE edition?
The cited Linux Mint announcements and release notes document LMDE 7 Cinnamon. They do not confirm a future LMDE MATE edition or provide a release plan for one, so an MATE version should be treated as unannounced unless Linux Mint publishes it.
Quick Recap
Practical checklist
- Check that your computer meets the 2 GB RAM, 20 GB storage and 1024×768 minimums; 4 GB RAM and 100 GB storage are Linux Mint’s recommendations.
- Download the 3 GB Cinnamon ISO from an official Linux Mint source.
- Verify its integrity and authenticity before writing it to removable media.
- For installation, review swap and LVM settings carefully.
- For an LMDE 6 upgrade, update first, create snapshots, confirm 64-bit architecture, run
mintupgrade, and reboot only after it reports success.
