LFS111 is an introductory, business-focused course about how open source relates to enterprise 5G. The Linux Foundation’s July 17, 2024 announcement describes it as free, self-paced e-learning for executive and IT leaders, estimated to take two hours. The course covers enterprise fit, standards and software, business strategy, and future planning; its Credly badge listing says a score of 70% on the final exam is required to earn the badge. Who LFS111 is for
The Linux Foundation presents Open Source and the 5G Transition as foundational learning for executive and IT leaders. It is oriented toward business decisions about open-source networking and emerging technologies, rather than hands-on network configuration. The badge listing says learners should be able to make informed decisions about open-source networking, consider collaboration between open-source projects and their organization, and plan for sustainable implementation through an Open Source Program Office. That makes the course potentially useful for leaders evaluating 5G strategy or learners who want a business-level introduction. It should not be mistaken for a technical lab course or a substitute for implementation training; the published description does not identify hands-on labs or configuration exercises.
Format and expected time
In its July 17, 2024 announcement, the Linux Foundation describes LFS111 as free, self-paced e-learning estimated at two hours, with a discussion forum. Two hours is the provider’s estimate, not a measured completion time for every learner. The same announcement says successful completion earns a digital badge.

Those are details from the 2024 announcement, not confirmation of current enrollment, pricing, or forum access. Current course availability could not be confirmed from the published details cited here. Check the provider’s live course catalog before relying on present-tense enrollment or cost information. The LF Networking training page lists LFS111 among its free e-learning courses, but a listing alone does not establish that enrollment is currently open: LF Networking training courses.
What the course covers
The announcement groups the curriculum into four areas, moving from the relationship between open source and 5G toward organizational decisions and future planning:
- Open Source and 5G: An Enterprise Match — considers how open-source approaches relate to enterprise 5G.
- Standards and Software — introduces the role of standards and software in this context.
- Integrating Open Source Software into Your Business Strategy — addresses how an organization can consider open source as part of its business strategy.
- Considering Your Business Future — turns to the implications for future organizational planning.
The published topic titles establish the course’s broad scope, but do not specify particular technologies, deployment instructions, or a detailed technical syllabus.

Credly’s Linux Foundation listing states that learners must score at least 70% on the final exam to earn the LFS111 badge. It is a digital credential, not a physical certificate or item. The listing characterizes the course as foundational and describes the badge’s intended learning outcomes; it does not state a publication date for those criteria.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the course says about open-source concerns
In the July 2024 course announcement, Clyde Seepersad, SVP and General Manager of Linux Foundation Training & Certification, said that concerns about security, control, and support lead some 5G providers and users to dismiss open source’s advantages. He called those concerns real but unfounded and said the course helps leaders understand open source’s benefits and community.
That is the provider’s rationale for the course, not independent evidence that open source resolves security, control, or support concerns in every deployment. Those questions still depend on an organization’s architecture, governance, vendors, operational capabilities, and risk requirements.
Quick Recap
Best Value
Is LFS111 the right fit?
- Consider it if you want a short, business-oriented introduction to open source and enterprise 5G, or need a framework for discussing strategy with technical teams.
- Look for more technical training if your goal is to configure a network, build a 5G deployment, or gain hands-on implementation experience; the course description does not promise those activities.
- Verify current enrollment details directly with the Linux Foundation, because the available announcement is dated July 2024 and does not confirm today’s catalog status.
