The Linux Foundation and Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) announced the Cloud Engineer Bootcamp in 2020 as an online learning path for people starting a cloud career. Its documented design combined Linux administration, DevOps, containers and Kubernetes training with LFCS and CKA certification exams. The announcement is historical: available information does not confirm whether the beginner bootcamp is open for enrollment now or whether its current terms match the original offer.
What the bootcamp was designed to teach
The program was intended to take learners from foundational Linux skills toward cloud-native operations. The 2020 CNCF announcement listed five courses:
- Essentials of Linux System Administration (LFS201) and Linux Networking and Administration (LFS211) for Linux systems and networking foundations.
- Containers Fundamentals (LFS253) for container concepts.
- DevOps and SRE Fundamentals: Implementing Continuous Delivery (LFS261) for delivery practices and reliability concepts.
- Kubernetes Fundamentals (LFS258) for introductory Kubernetes learning.
The announced program also included the Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator (LFCS) and Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) exams. A Linux Foundation-issued Credly badge record describes the courses as self-paced and names those exams. These records document the historical program design; they do not establish that the present-day bootcamp, if available, has the same course list or exam inclusions.
How much time did it take?
At launch, CNCF said learners could complete the program in about six months by studying 15–20 hours per week. That was a launch-era estimate, not a guaranteed completion time or a current workload commitment. Learners’ backgrounds, pace and exam preparation needs can affect how long a path like this takes.

Was it self-paced or instructor-led?
The launch description presented the courses and exams as online and mentioned an online forum and weekday video office hours with instructors. A Linux Foundation forum response in September 2023 told an enrolled learner that courses and exams were asynchronous and directed them to the learner-area Logistics course for office-hour details. Together, these sources describe a self-paced experience with support logistics communicated through the learner area, but they do not confirm that the same support arrangements remain available today.
Beginner bootcamp versus Advanced Cloud Engineer Bootcamp
The Linux Foundation’s March 2022 guidance distinguished the beginner Cloud Engineer Bootcamp, described as suitable for complete newcomers, from the Advanced Cloud Engineer Bootcamp, aimed at IT professionals with experience but without a cloud specialization. They were separate programs, not two names for the same course.
The Advanced program’s July 2020 announcement described a different six-course curriculum covering containers, Kubernetes, service mesh, monitoring, logging and Helm, plus the CKA exam. It listed 12 months of access and a $999 standard fee at that time. Those are launch-era details for the Advanced program only; they should not be attributed to the beginner bootcamp or treated as current pricing.
Is the bootcamp available now, and what does it cost?
The available published information does not establish whether the beginner bootcamp is currently open for enrollment, its current price, exact curriculum, included exam attempts, access period or support terms. The 2020 announcement is not a reliable basis for a current purchase comparison. Check directly with The Linux Foundation for the current enrollment page and written terms before paying, especially to confirm which exams and attempts are included, how long course access lasts, and what learner support is provided.

How to decide whether it fits
The original path was structured for people building cloud skills from Linux foundations, while the separate advanced path assumed prior IT experience. Before committing to any current offering, compare its published terms against the background and support you need:
- Prerequisites and expected Linux or IT knowledge.
- Topics covered and whether they match your target role.
- Which certification exams and attempts are included, and whether retakes cost extra.
- Whether learning is self-paced, scheduled or a mix, and what instructor access actually means.
- Total access period, weekly study expectations and current total price.
The Linux Foundation’s 2022 cloud-career guidance also pointed readers to its cloud career roadmap and free introductory courses as ways to explore the field before choosing a structured program.
