The Linux Foundation states that it was retired on August 30, 2025, so new candidates cannot register for or schedule the exam. People who earned the credential can still have it validated through the Linux Foundation’s Certification Verification Tool.
What happened to LFCT?
The Linux Foundation officially retired the LFCT exam on August 30, 2025. Retirement means the assessment is closed to new bookings; it does not automatically erase credentials already issued.

If you are researching LFCT because a job listing mentions it, confirm whether the employer accepts a retired credential and ask which currently available Linux or cloud certification it prefers. Do not pay for an LFCT exam voucher or assume an old preparation page still leads to an available exam.
What LFCT represented
LFCT was an intermediate, paid Linux Foundation certification for technicians working with Linux-based cloud infrastructure. The credential description covered:
#1 Best Overall
- Linux cloud operations
- Virtual machines
- Containers
- Git and CI/CD pipelines
- Orchestration tools
- Automation and change management
- Validation and troubleshooting
It was intended to demonstrate practical familiarity with the tooling and workflows used to operate modern cloud environments, rather than certify only theoretical Linux knowledge.
How the LFCT exam worked
The historical assessment was a 120-minute, online-proctored exam combining performance-based tasks and multiple-choice questions. Those details describe the retired exam and should not be treated as a current booking format.
Rank #2
Can you still take the LFCT exam?
No. Because the exam was retired on August 30, 2025, a new candidate cannot currently purchase, register for, or schedule LFCT through the Linux Foundation. A course or third-party page that still advertises an LFCT booking may be outdated.

Historical LFCT preparation path
A Linux Foundation curriculum document published in February 2024 suggested a three-stage learning path. The courses were recommendations, not admission requirements.
Rank #3
- Introduction to Linux (LFS101): listed as free and intended to establish core Linux knowledge.
- Fundamentals of Open Source IT and Cloud Computing (LFS200): listed as free and focused on open-source IT and cloud concepts.
- Linux for Cloud Technicians Essentials (LFS203): the exam-preparation course associated with LFCT.
- Exam registration and completion: the final step in the historical path, which is no longer available for new candidates.
The document estimated roughly three to six months for the path, depending on prior experience. Since LFCT is retired, check the Linux Foundation’s current course catalog before purchasing LFS203 or assuming its material remains maintained. Content may have been withdrawn or redirected to another certification.
How difficult was LFCT?
LFCT was positioned at an intermediate level and used performance-based tasks as well as multiple-choice questions. That combination required more than memorizing terminology: candidates needed to understand how Linux cloud components fit together and troubleshoot or validate practical scenarios.
There is no authoritative published LFCT pass-rate statistic in the issuer materials, so a numerical estimate of difficulty or a guaranteed study time would be misleading. The historical three-to-six-month learning-path estimate is a planning guide, not a pass guarantee.
How to verify an existing LFCT certificate
The Linux Foundation says certifications that are no longer actively offered can still be recognized and validated through its Certification Verification Tool.
Best Value
- Open the Linux Foundation’s Certification Verification Tool.
- Enter the certificate holder’s last name.
- Enter the certification ID exactly as it appears on the certificate or credential record.
- Review the returned record and share that verification result with an employer or other requesting organization.
If the search fails, check spelling and the certification ID, then contact the Linux Foundation’s certification support rather than assuming the credential is invalid.

The Linux Foundation’s general certification policy says certifications expire 24 months after the requirements are met. Under that policy, a holder may renew by retaking and passing the same exam before the credential expires.
That renewal rule cannot be applied automatically to LFCT now that its exam is retired. Certificate holders should use the verification tool to confirm their individual status and expiration information, and ask the Linux Foundation what options apply to their record. Do not infer a certificate’s validity solely from the August 30, 2025 retirement date.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat should LFCT holders or prospective candidates do now?
If you already earned LFCT
- Locate your certificate and certification ID.
- Verify the credential in the Linux Foundation’s Certification Verification Tool.
- Record the displayed status and expiration information for employers or auditors.
- Ask the Linux Foundation about renewal or successor options if your credential is near expiration.
If you planned to take LFCT
- Do not purchase an LFCT voucher or rely on an old registration link.
- Use the Linux Foundation’s current certification catalog to identify an available path.
- Choose a credential based on the work you want to perform: Linux administration, cloud operations, or cloud-native orchestration.
- Confirm that the exam can currently be purchased and scheduled before buying preparation material.
Was LFCS a replacement for LFCT?
The 2024 LFCT curriculum document named Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator (LFCS) as a possible next step after LFCT. That makes LFCS a follow-on option identified by the Linux Foundation, not an automatic replacement or equivalent. LFCS has its own scope, assessment, eligibility and current availability, so check the present Linux Foundation catalog before treating it as the right alternative.
