The Jupyter Foundation is a Linux Foundation fund created to raise, budget, and spend money supporting Project Jupyter—not to take over its technical governance. The Linux Foundation announced it at its Member Summit on November 19, 2024; its announcement article, by Allison Stokes, was published on November 21.

Why the Jupyter Foundation was formed

Project Jupyter develops open-source software and standards for interactive computing, data science, and research. The Foundation gives organizations a structured way to contribute sustained funding and engineering resources to the project, with the stated aim of supporting its continued, vendor-neutral technical advancement. The Linux Foundation announcement identified engineering, release management, community management, documentation, accessibility, marketing, and events as possible support areas under consideration—not as work already funded.

The Foundation’s About page describes its role as supporting the growth and sustainability of Project Jupyter’s software and standards ecosystem. Its priorities include security, accessibility, release management, documentation, and broad participation.

Who governs the Foundation—and who governs Jupyter?

These are separate responsibilities. The Project Jupyter governance page describes the Jupyter Foundation as a directed fund of the Linux Foundation, a 501(c)(6). Its purpose is to raise, budget, and spend funds for Project Jupyter and its mission. The Foundation Governing Board controls the Foundation’s resources, approves its annual budget, and approves charter changes.

#1 Best Overall

The Foundation board includes all Project Jupyter Executive Council members, one representative from each Premier member, and between one and three representatives collectively for General members. Board representation concerns the Foundation and its resources; it does not mean member organizations control Jupyter’s technical decisions.

Project Jupyter’s About page says the Executive Council is ultimately responsible for all dimensions of the project, while the Software Steering Council has jurisdiction over cross-project software decisions. The Foundation’s own About page states that joining does not grant influence over the technical projects. In short, the Foundation can fund work, but membership is not a route to directing project code or technical policy.

Who joined at launch

The member list in the November 2024 announcement is a historical launch roster, not a statement of current membership.

The Foundation’s member directory is a later, changeable listing. It lists AWS, Apple, Bloomberg, Google, Meta, Snowflake, and Uber as Premier members, and Anaconda, Databricks, JetBrains, and OpenTeams among General members. Check that live directory for the current roster rather than treating either list as permanent.

What organizational membership involves

The Foundation’s Join page publishes three membership categories. The listed dues and eligibility terms are live information and may change; consult the page directly before making a financial or eligibility decision.

Category Published dues and eligibility Examples of listed benefits
Premier $150,000 annually Board representation and member benefits, which vary by tier
General Annual fees on a sliding scale Benefits vary by tier; the Join page describes opportunities such as town halls, technical reports and blogs, promotion, and event discounts
Associate $0 for pre-approved nonprofits, open-source projects, and government entities Benefits vary by tier and eligibility

Foundation membership requires at least Silver Linux Foundation membership. The Join page distinguishes Foundation fees for organizations already in the Linux Foundation from fees for those that are not; review its current table for the applicable terms. The listed dues are organizational membership costs, not a charge to use Jupyter software.

What the announcement does—and does not—establish

The release presents the Foundation as a funding and resource mechanism, not a new Jupyter product or a change to the software’s licensing. Project Jupyter says its software is free to use under a modified BSD license. The announcement also quotes supporters describing Jupyter’s importance, but those remarks are statements from launch participants, not independent evaluations.

For example, Jim Zemlin, Executive Director of the Linux Foundation, called the Foundation “a critical step forward in ensuring the long-term sustainability of this transformative open-source ecosystem.” Brian Granger, Senior Principal Technologist at AWS and Co-Founder of Project Jupyter, said the project had become “critical infrastructure for data science, AI/ML, computational science, and education,” and added, “We are proud to support the Jupyter Foundation and are committed to its mission.” Amin Vahdat, Vice President of ML, Systems, and Cloud AI at Google, said Jupyter is “essential to the AI development ecosystem” and has helped millions of people in data science and machine learning. These are attributed launch-release quotations, not measured usage findings.
