Linux Device Manager: How to Show Devices, Buses, Drivers, and Kernel Events in a GTK4 Tree

Linux exposes device hierarchies and bus and driver relationships through sysfs; kernel notifications and GTK4 tree-list components offer building blocks for a device manager, but those views are not one native tree.

A GTK4 app can present Linux devices in an expandable tree, but a useful device manager would need to combine several related views rather than pretend that buses, drivers, physical hierarchy, and event history are one native tree. Linux exposes these relationships through the kernel device model and sysfs, while kernel uevents and udev provide a route to live updates. GTK4 supplies tree-list building blocks for displaying such data. The named application concept is not established here as an existing, tested program.

What a Linux device manager can show

Linux’s driver model gives devices and buses a common representation, and sysfs exposes a hierarchy corresponding to kernel device objects. That provides the foundation for an inventory showing device relationships and driver associations. The kernel overview describes the model’s purpose as making common operations—including discovery, hotplug, and power management—more consistent across bus-specific systems. “Every device” needs a scope. The kernel device model is not the same as GTK’s input-device abstraction: GTK represents pointer, keyboard, touch, and related devices as GdkDevice objects, whereas sysfs exposes kernel objects and their relationships. A device manager aimed at hardware inventory should make clear which kernel objects it includes and which relationships it displays.

Why devices, buses, and drivers do not form one simple tree

Physical hierarchy: /sys/devices

/sys/devices represents the device hierarchy. It is the natural starting point for a tree that follows parent-and-child relationships in the kernel’s device model.

Bus and driver relationships: /sys/bus

/sys/bus provides bus-oriented device and driver views. Entries for bus devices link to their corresponding directories under /sys/devices, so the bus view and physical hierarchy are connected, but they are not interchangeable. An interface can offer a physical tree, a bus-grouped view, or navigation between both; forcing each relationship into a single tree can obscure how the kernel actually represents them. Driver binding is more than matching a name

A device is bound to a driver through bus-specific matching logic. When a device appears, its bus checks registered drivers for supported identifiers, and a driver’s probe logic initializes the device. The relevant identifiers and matching rules vary by bus, so a manager should report the kernel’s device-driver association rather than infer it from similar names. Sysfs links make these associations navigable through bus, driver, and class views. Linux Kernel documentation: device and driver binding

How a device manager could follow kernel events

When the kernel registers a device, it can generate a uevent to notify userspace. udev receives notifications for device additions, removals, and state changes, then evaluates configured rules. Those rules can, for example, affect device-node permissions, create symlinks, or rename network interfaces. The event notification is a kernel-to-userspace signal; udev’s rule processing is a separate userspace action. Linux Kernel documentation: device systemd-udev documentation

A graphical manager could use notifications to refresh the inventory or annotate a device with recent changes. That would be a design choice, not proof that this specific proposed app exists or records every kernel event. “Kernel events” also needs a defined meaning: device add/remove/state-change notifications are not automatically a complete log of all activity in the kernel.

How GTK4 can present the hierarchy

GTK4’s current list framework supports a tree-like interface using GtkTreeListModel to expose hierarchical data as list rows, paired with GtkTreeExpander for expanding and collapsing branches. A create-model callback can provide child models on demand. Returning NULL marks a guaranteed leaf; for a node that may acquire children later, the model should instead provide an initially empty child model that can be populated. For a table-oriented inventory, GtkColumnView supports columns with headers and can use sorters for user-controlled ordering. Whether to prioritize an expandable hierarchy, a sortable inventory, or navigation between both is an interface decision; the GTK documentation establishes the building blocks, not a particular finished application design. Design choices that determine what the tree means

Decision One option Alternative
Relationship view Follow physical parentage in /sys/devices. Group by bus or driver using the related views in /sys/bus.
Updates Build an initial inventory from sysfs. Also respond to device notifications for live changes.
Loading Load descendants eagerly. Create child models as branches are expanded.
Presentation Use a tree-first GTK list with expanders. Use a column-based inventory with sorting, or combine navigation patterns.

These choices affect both usability and implementation. A physical tree answers “what is connected beneath this device?”; a bus or driver grouping answers “which devices belong to this bus or driver?” Event-driven updates address change over time, while on-demand loading addresses when descendants are constructed for display. The relevant kernel and GTK APIs should be checked against the versions targeted by an implementation, since documentation for current and development kernel branches can change.
