Linux Default Users and Groups Explained for Server Admins

A practical guide to Linux default users and groups: decode passwd and group files, interpret root and nobody, understand UID ranges and systemd accounts, and audit or disable identities without breaking services.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Linux does not have one universal list of default accounts. Every distribution creates a core set of identities, then adds service users and groups for installed packages. The reliable way to understand a host is to inspect its name-service databases, numeric UID/GID ranges, running services and file ownership—not to delete accounts merely because their names look unfamiliar.

root (UID 0) is the superuser, nobody (normally UID 65534) is an overflow identity, and most modern systemd-based distributions reserve UIDs 1–999 for system users and start regular users at UID 1000. Those are conventions, not guarantees: older releases and local policy may use different boundaries.

What “default users” means on a Linux server

A fresh installation normally contains several classes of identity:

  • Administrative identities: chiefly root, UID 0.
  • Service or system identities: non-human accounts used by daemons, package scripts and operating-system components.
  • Regular users: human login accounts, often beginning at UID 1000.
  • Overflow or special identities: such as nobody, used when another subsystem cannot map an identity.

Package installation changes the list. A web server, database, mail service or monitoring agent may create a dedicated user and group. Therefore, an account present on one server but absent on another is not automatically suspicious or unnecessary.

How Linux stores account and group data

The seven fields in /etc/passwd

The passwd database is a text file describing login accounts. Each record has seven colon-separated fields:

name:password:UID:GID:GECOS:directory:shell
Field Meaning Administration notes
name Login or account name Names are labels; kernel permission checks use numeric IDs.
password Historically a password hash location On typical systems, an x points to the protected shadow database. An asterisk blocks login through login(1), but does not stop every non-login execution path.
UID Numeric user identifier UID 0 is root; UID 65534 is conventionally nobody.
GID Primary group identifier This is the account’s primary group; supplementary groups are stored separately.
GECOS Informational comment Often contains a person’s full name or a service description. It grants no privilege.
directory Home directory For a human account this is usually a writable home; service accounts may use a non-home path.
shell Program started for a login A missing shell path prevents login through login(1). /usr/sbin/nologin is commonly used for non-interactive service accounts.

The file must be readable for account-to-name lookups, while write access should be limited to the superuser. Do not hand-edit it during routine administration; malformed delimiters or duplicate IDs can break authentication and ownership resolution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The four fields in /etc/group

The group database defines groups with this format:

group_name:password:GID:user_list
  • Group name: the human-readable label.
  • Password field: a legacy mechanism rarely used for modern administration.
  • GID: the numeric group identifier.
  • User list: comma-separated supplementary members.

A user’s primary group is the GID in that user’s passwd record. Additional memberships appear in group records and are reflected by the account’s effective group list. Use id USER rather than reading only one file, because name-service switch (NSS) modules can add identities from sources such as LDAP or NIS.

The familiar built-in accounts

root: UID 0

root is the superuser identity (UID 0). The kernel treats UID 0 specially, so changing the name attached to UID 0 does not remove its privilege. Protect the account, use individual administrator accounts with audited elevation where possible, and avoid running network-facing daemons as root.

bin and daemon: legacy compatibility names

The Linux Standard Base requires the root name and documents bin and daemon as legacy compatibility identities. Their presence does not mean current services should share them. The LSB guidance is that daemons should run under individual UID/GID pairs so one compromised service cannot automatically access another service’s files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

nobody and nogroup

UID 65534 is the conventional “nobody” or overflow UID. It is used when a subsystem cannot map an identity, including some NFS and user-namespace situations. Some distributions name the corresponding group nogroup. Files owned by 65534 deserve investigation: they may be expected overflow mappings, or they may indicate a broken mount, export or container mapping.

Optional names such as adm, lp and mail

Accounts and groups named adm, lp, mail, man, operator, sync, shutdown and halt are distribution conventions, not a universal contract. Applications should not assume these names exist. Check the local account database and the packages that created each identity before changing it.

UID and GID ranges: useful clues, not proof

Current systemd documentation commonly describes this split:

Numeric range Common interpretation Qualification
0 root Superuser identity.
1–999 System users and groups Typical systemd policy; local configuration can change it.
1000–65533 Regular users Common starting point for human accounts.
65534 nobody overflow UID May be named differently in surrounding group records.
65536–4294967294 Other regular-user space in systemd’s documented scheme Large-ID allocations and subordinate or remote identities may appear here.

Older systems used boundaries such as 99/100 or 499/500. The LSB also described a static system range of 0–99 and an administrator or post-install allocation range of 100–499. Consequently, classify an account using the distribution’s policy, package metadata and actual use—not the UID number alone.

Static, generated and remote identities

systemd-sysusers

systemd-sysusers declaratively creates system users and groups, and can add users to groups during package installation or boot. Definitions can be supplied in /etc/sysusers.d, /run/sysusers.d, /usr/local/lib/sysusers.d and /usr/lib/sysusers.d. Local administrator overrides belong in /etc/sysusers.d; vendor files normally live under /usr/lib/sysusers.d.

Sysusers is intended for system accounts, not for ordinary human users. A package may recreate a service account after you remove it, because its declarative definition remains installed. Disable or uninstall the owning package, or override its configuration, rather than repeatedly deleting the generated account.

nss-systemd and accounts absent from /etc/passwd

The nss-systemd module resolves dynamic users and can synthesize records for root and nobody even when ordinary passwd or group files are unavailable. As a result, getent passwd may show an identity that is not a literal line in /etc/passwd. Always use NSS-aware commands when diagnosing service ownership:

getent passwd
getent group
id SERVICE_USER

System users and groups must be resolvable without network access for early boot. Regular users, by contrast, may come from remote databases when an appropriate cache is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to audit a server safely

  1. Inventory resolved accounts and groups. Run getent passwd and getent group. This includes configured NSS sources instead of only local files.
  2. Inspect one identity in detail. Use getent passwd USER, getent group GROUP and id USER to record UID, primary GID and supplementary memberships.
  3. Find processes using the account. Check service definitions, process listings, timers and sockets. For a running process, record its numeric owner as well as its resolved name.
  4. Locate owned files. Search relevant local filesystems by numeric UID/GID and inspect permissions with stat or ls -l. Keep the numeric values in your notes because names can differ between hosts.
  5. Identify the creator. Query package ownership and inspect sysusers definitions, deployment manifests and configuration management. An account with no current process may still own persistent data or be needed on the next package upgrade.
  6. Document dependencies and back up. Record services, timers, sockets, mounts, files and package relationships before making a change. Preserve copies of account databases before any recovery edit.

Which accounts are safe to disable or delete?

There is no universal “safe-to-delete” list. An account is a candidate for restriction only after you establish that no service, scheduled task, package script, file tree, mount or remote-access workflow depends on it.

Prefer locking or disabling login

For an unused human account, lock its password using the distribution’s account-management tools and remove unnecessary interactive access. For a service account, set a deliberate non-interactive shell such as /usr/sbin/nologin when the service does not require a shell. A shell change alone does not stop processes, socket activation, cron jobs or package scripts that invoke the account directly.

Do not “disable” by changing ownership blindly

Changing a service UID or deleting its group can make existing files appear numerically owned by an unknown identity and can prevent upgrades from recreating correct permissions. If a service needs a new identity, create the replacement, migrate files deliberately, update the unit and configuration, test, then remove the old identity only after verification.

Red flags requiring investigation

  • A UID or GID is shared by unrelated network-facing services.
  • UID 0 appears on an account other than the intended root identity.
  • Files unexpectedly belong to UID 65534 after a mount or container change.
  • A supposedly disabled account owns active processes, timers, sockets or writable application data.
  • An account is recreated after deletion, indicating a package or sysusers definition still requires it.

Comparing distributions and hardening policies

When evaluating two Linux systems, compare these operational properties rather than account names alone:

Axis Questions to answer
Account records Are service users static lines in local files, generated dynamically, or supplied by another NSS source?
UID/GID policy Where do system IDs end and regular IDs begin? Are older or locally configured boundaries in effect?
Service separation Does each daemon have a dedicated UID/GID, or do several services share a legacy identity?
Login controls Which shells, password-lock rules and administrative groups are used?
Name-service dependencies Can required system identities resolve during offline boot? Are regular users supplied by LDAP, NIS or another remote source?
Recreation behavior Will package installation or boot-time sysusers definitions recreate a removed account?

Troubleshooting common surprises

“The user is not in /etc/passwd, but a process uses it”

Query getent passwd UID_OR_NAME and inspect NSS configuration. The identity may be dynamic, remote or synthesized by nss-systemd. Check the service unit and its package definitions before editing local files.

“Files show an unfamiliar number instead of a name”

Use stat to capture numeric UID/GID, then query getent passwd UID and getent group GID. If no mapping exists, determine whether the files came from another host, a container, an NFS export or a deleted local account. Do not assign a new owner until the provenance and required service are known.

“A service will not start after account cleanup”

Restore the expected UID/GID or recreate it through the package’s supported tooling, then verify file ownership, unit settings, capabilities and socket permissions. Review logs for permission and name-resolution failures. If the package ships a sysusers file, let the package or systemd-sysusers recreate the identity rather than hand-editing databases.

Practical administrator checklist

  • Use getent and id for NSS-aware identity checks.
  • Record numeric UID/GID values alongside names.
  • Treat UID 0 and UID 65534 as special cases requiring context.
  • Assume names, shells, optional groups and UID boundaries vary by distribution.
  • Give each daemon a dedicated identity when possible.
  • Use account-management and distribution tools instead of routine manual edits.
  • Before removal, check processes, timers, sockets, files, mounts and package ownership.
  • Keep service accounts non-interactive where appropriate, while recognizing that login-shell settings are not a complete process-control mechanism.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most important default Linux account?

root, UID 0, is the superuser identity. Protect it and avoid running network-facing services directly as root.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does every Linux distribution start normal users at UID 1000?

No. UID 1000 is common on modern systemd-based systems, but older distributions and local policy may use boundaries such as 99/100 or 499/500.

Can I remove the nobody account?

Do not remove it as a routine hardening step. UID 65534 is used for overflow mappings, including some NFS and user-namespace cases, and may be synthesized by NSS.

Why does getent show an account missing from /etc/passwd?

NSS can resolve remote, dynamic or synthesized identities. Check nss-systemd, remote directory services and the service’s package definitions.
