timerCLI, a Linux command-line timer described by DEV Community author fralsare, treats time as active until it sees no input for a configured interval. Its reported default is 30 seconds: after that, it pauses and resumes when input returns. This measures keyboard, mouse, or touch events—not attention, foreground-app use, or productivity.
How timerCLI decides when to pause
In fralsare’s description, timerCLI opens readable /dev/input/event* device files in non-blocking mode, drains pending events, and records the time of the latest event. It compares elapsed time since that event with an idle limit. The article gives 30 seconds as the default; it is a configuration value, not a measured result. When the limit is reached, the timer pauses, then resumes when input returns. Read the author’s description on DEV Community.

The reported output shows idle and active counters with a pause/resume indicator. The author says Ctrl+C ends the run and prints active and paused totals. Those are the tool’s described behaviors; the implementation was not independently run or verified across Linux setups.
What “active time” means—and what it does not
Here, “active” means that input events have occurred recently enough to stay within the timer’s idle threshold. A person may be thinking, reading, listening, or otherwise working without generating input, so the timer could count that interval as paused. Conversely, incidental input can keep the timer running without indicating focused or productive work. The described method does not establish which application is open or whether its user is attentive.

Requirements and permission considerations
Fralsare says timerCLI uses Python’s standard library and needs permission to read input-device files under /dev/input/event*. The article gives adding the user to the input group and logging out and back in as an example. Treat that as the author’s stated setup, not a universal instruction: available devices and permission policies can differ, and group membership can grant broad access to input events. Check your distribution’s security guidance before changing access permissions.
How this approach differs from desktop idle detection
Reading device events is not the only way to infer idle time. Linux’s systemd-logind interface exposes session idle state through IdleHint, idle-since timestamps, and change notifications; it also identifies session types such as tty, x11, and wayland. That is a session-level signal, distinct from a program’s direct observation of raw input events. systemd-logind API documentation.

Desktop support also depends on the environment. Wayland’s idle protocol lets a client request notification after a period without user activity, if the compositor exposes that protocol. An X11 project example uses xprintidle. These are different detection paths, not evidence that timerCLI itself supports every X11 or Wayland setup. When a different kind of timer may fit better
If you want to record work intervals deliberately rather than infer them from input, Timewarrior is a command-line tracker with commands for managing and reporting intervals. Its documentation supports manual interval tracking; it does not establish the automatic raw-input pause behavior described for timerCLI. Timewarrior documentation.
| Approach | Signal or method | Coverage and context |
|---|---|---|
| timerCLI as described by its author | Elapsed time since the latest readable input-device event; automatic pause and resume | Uses Linux input-event files; the article does not establish tested distribution or desktop coverage, or application/window tracking |
| systemd-logind idle state | Session-level idle hint, timestamp, and change notifications | Exposes session types; not the same as direct event-file observation, and the cited API description does not establish timerCLI integration |
| Wayland idle protocol or X11 utility example | Desktop/session-specific idle notification or measurement | Wayland protocol availability depends on compositor support; the X11 example uses xprintidle |
| Timewarrior | Manually managed time intervals and reports | CLI tracking; the cited documentation does not establish automatic input-based pausing or app/window context |
The available descriptions do not provide a common test, resource benchmark, or permission comparison for these approaches. Choose based on the signal you actually want: recent device input, session-reported idleness, or intervals you start and stop yourself.
