You also need to budget for outbound data, supervise the streaming process, and design recovery for failures. Linode is a viable cloud-hosting platform for a continuous YouTube stream if you choose a plan that fits the workload and build monitoring and recovery around it. Choose the server’s job before choosing a plan
Compute, network, and transfer needs change depending on what the Linode infrastructure is meant to do. Keep the stream’s origin, processing, and viewer playback roles distinct.

For a constant-bitrate upstream feed, a useful estimate is bitrate in megabits per second × stream seconds ÷ 8, giving megabytes before protocol overhead. Over 30 days, a continuously sent 10 Mbps stream uses about 3.24 decimal TB; a 17 Mbps stream uses about 5.51 decimal TB. These are calculations from bitrate and duration, not provider-published usage figures.

Use the bitrate for your actual stream
YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Those are examples, not universal settings: YouTube’s guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use the row matching your encoder output when estimating transfer. Check what Akamai counts and includes
Akamai says inbound transfer is free, while outbound traffic to destinations outside the originating data center is metered. Included monthly transfer depends on plan family and region; Accelerated Linodes and some other families have no included monthly transfer allotment. Transfer overages are excluded from the monthly price cap that applies to some services. A fair cost comparison should include the plan family, region, expected monthly egress, overage exposure, and any processing needs. The cheapest VM price alone does not show the cost of sending a continuous feed.

Configure YouTube and the encoder for continuous operation
YouTube requires an encoder server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder. Prefer RTMPS when the encoder supports it; YouTube describes it as a secure extension of RTMP. [YouTube encoder settings]

- Select a YouTube stream configuration. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and use the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Keep the key private and enter it only in the encoder or relay that needs it.
- Match encoder output to your intended format. Choose the codec, resolution, and frame rate, then use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for that combination. For example, its H.264 guidance lists 10 Mbps at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60; other formats have other recommendations. [YouTube encoder settings]
- Use RTMPS where available. Set the encoder’s destination to YouTube’s RTMPS server URL and supply the stream key. If your software exposes separate primary and backup destinations, configure them deliberately and account for both in bandwidth planning. [YouTube encoder settings]
- Leave network headroom. YouTube advises having 20% more bandwidth than the combined bitrate of the primary and backup streams. Test the path from the host to YouTube instead of assuming the VM’s advertised network capacity is continuously available to your process. [YouTube network tips]
- Preview and inspect stream health. Start a test stream before relying on it, check YouTube’s preview and health indicators, and confirm the picture, audio, and ingest stability from the actual deployment region. - Supervise the process and rehearse recovery. Configure the host or service manager to detect a stopped encoder or relay and restart it where appropriate. Test what happens if the process exits, the host reboots, the network path fails, or YouTube drops the connection. A restart policy is not a substitute for verifying that the stream actually returns.
Build reliability instead of assuming it
A 24/7 broadcast is an operations problem as well as a hosting choice. YouTube recommends testing, monitoring, and testing encoder failover. Before depending on the stream, run a test long enough to expose recurring interruptions and conduct a failure drill that checks detection, restart behavior, and whether YouTube resumes receiving the feed. For any design, consider proximity and network path to both the source encoder and YouTube ingest, plus monitoring, process restarts, backup encoding, and failover. The appropriate measures depend on whether the host relays, transcodes, or distributes playback.
Common problems and what to check
- Stream will not connect: Check that the selected YouTube server URL and stream key match the intended stream, that the key has not been reset, and that the encoder can reach the destination. Prefer the RTMPS endpoint if supported.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Verify bitrate and format against the matching YouTube recommendation, then test available network capacity. Include 20% headroom over the combined primary and backup bitrates if both are sending. [YouTube network tips]
- The process stops but the VM remains online: Check encoder or relay logs and configure process supervision and restart behavior. Rehearse the recovery path; a running VM does not prove the streaming process is healthy.
- Transfer charges exceed expectations: Recalculate from actual bitrate and runtime, then verify the plan family’s included transfer, region, and current overage treatment. Transfer beyond the monthly price cap may still be billed. [Akamai billing guidance]

- The stream is interrupted by a failure: Determine whether the issue was the source, process, instance, network route, or YouTube ingest. Restore service, check YouTube preview and health, and repeat the failure drill after changing the design.
