LinkedIn’s 2026 “10 companies on the rise in Seattle” list is not a list of ten Seattle-headquartered startups. GeekWire’s fact-check, published October 14, 2026, found that four entries—Anthropic, Auger, Whatnot and Armada—are headquartered outside the Seattle area. That is 40% of the list, calculated from the four companies and ten total entries.
The distinction matters: a company can have a significant Seattle engineering or operating presence without being headquartered in the region. LinkedIn’s ranking rules allow that broader interpretation.

Which companies on the list are actually based in the Seattle area?
GeekWire identifies six entries as Seattle-area companies. Their headquarters span several cities in the region rather than Seattle proper.
| LinkedIn rank | Company | Headquarters or local base | Geographic status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | Truveta | Bellevue | Seattle-area based |
| 5 | Yoodli | Seattle | Seattle-area based |
| 6 | Worldscape | Redmond | Seattle-area based |
| 7 | Overland AI | Seattle | Seattle-area based |
| 8 | Gradial | Seattle | Seattle-area based |
| 10 | Stoke Space | Kent | Seattle-area based |
“Seattle area” therefore includes Bellevue, Redmond and Kent as well as Seattle. Treating the label as Seattle city limits would misdescribe even some of the six companies that are genuinely local to the metropolitan region.

Which four entries are headquartered elsewhere?
| Company | Headquarters identified by GeekWire | Seattle-area connection |
|---|---|---|
| Anthropic | San Francisco | Included because the ranking can capture a substantial Seattle technology presence, rather than because its headquarters are local. |
| Auger | Dallas after an August move | Retains an engineering center in Bellevue. |
| Whatnot | Los Angeles area | Has Seattle-area operations, but its headquarters are not local. |
| Armada | San Francisco, according to its LinkedIn profile | Appears in the Seattle ranking despite its listed headquarters being outside the region. |
The Auger entry illustrates why a headquarters-only reading can also miss local economic activity: the company moved its headquarters to Dallas in August while keeping a Bellevue engineering center. Conversely, calling every ranked company a Seattle startup overstates what the list establishes about corporate location.
Why did LinkedIn put non-local companies on a Seattle list?
LinkedIn’s methodology, as reported by GeekWire, combines four signals measured from July 2025 through June 2026:
Rank #2
- Employment growth
- Engagement with a company’s LinkedIn page
- Interest in the company’s job openings
- The ability to recruit talent from LinkedIn’s list of top companies
For its U.S. rankings, LinkedIn requires a U.S. headquarters. It does not require a Seattle-area headquarters for the Seattle ranking. A company headquartered in another U.S. city can therefore qualify when its hiring, employee growth, page activity or recruiting connections show meaningful activity in the Seattle market.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLinkedIn’s own 2025 Seattle announcement described the feature as an annual, data-based look at ten companies and explicitly noted that some firms headquartered elsewhere were building serious technology teams in Seattle. Under that definition, the list measures momentum connected to the region, not a strict register of locally headquartered startups.
Rank #3
What the ranking does—and does not—tell you
It is useful for finding hiring activity
The four signals make the list relevant to job seekers and recruiters. A company can rank because people are engaging with its page, showing interest in its openings, joining its workforce or moving into it from other highly regarded employers. Those indicators can reveal where hiring demand and candidate attention are gathering, even when a corporate headquarters sits elsewhere.
It is not a headquarters directory
The ranking does not establish that each company is incorporated, managed or headquartered in Seattle. The 2026 data window also means the list is a snapshot: offices, headquarters and hiring footprints can change after June 2026, and Auger’s August move demonstrates how quickly a location can become outdated.
Rank #4
Local presence still has economic significance
A Bellevue engineering center or a substantial Seattle team can bring jobs, technical expertise and investment to the area. The geographic criticism is about labeling and methodology, not a claim that satellite operations have no local importance.
How to use the list if you are researching Seattle startups
- Separate headquarters from operating presence. Check the company’s current LinkedIn page and corporate location information before treating an entry as Seattle-headquartered.
- Confirm the date. The ranking reflects July 2025–June 2026 activity and was fact-checked on October 14, 2026. A later headquarters move or office opening may not appear in the ranking.
- Look at current openings. LinkedIn’s job-interest signal makes open roles a practical way to determine whether a company is actively hiring in Seattle-area locations.
- Use the six local entries as a starting point, not a complete market map. The list contains only ten companies and is designed to identify rising momentum, not every startup headquartered in the region.
The bottom line on LinkedIn’s Seattle startup list
Six of LinkedIn’s ten ranked companies are headquartered in the Seattle area: Truveta, Yoodli, Worldscape, Overland AI, Gradial and Stoke Space. Anthropic, Auger, Whatnot and Armada are headquartered elsewhere, although the ranking can include companies with meaningful Seattle teams or facilities. The list is best read as a measure of companies gaining employment, engagement and recruiting momentum connected to Seattle—not as a precise list of ten Seattle-headquartered startups.
