That may make some supported installation paths more convenient, but it does not make every older phone compatible: support and prerequisites depend on the exact model and its device-specific guide.
What LineageOS 24.0 brings
Android Authority reported on October 11, 2026, that LineageOS 24.0 is based on Android 17 and includes new apps and browser-based installation tools. A secondary report also describes the release as Android 17-based. Check the project’s current changelog for authoritative release details; these reports do not establish the complete supported-device list or every release-specific requirement. Android Authority’s report and Jason’s Blog’s report provide the available coverage.

What the browser-based installers change—and what they do not
The reported browser tools cover ADB, Fastboot, Amlogic Burn and Samsung Odin protocols. They offer a browser-based route for supported flashing tasks; they do not remove a device’s bootloader, firmware or other prerequisites, nor do they turn an unsupported model into a supported one. Android Authority says LineageOS’s device-specific installation guides remain the recommended approach.
Start with the guide for the exact device and follow its sequence rather than treating the browser tool as a universal installer. The LineageOS Wiki’s device installation example illustrates a device-specific guide; the Wiki also has a separate installation guide for another device. Use the instructions that match your own model, not either example by default.

How to check whether your phone is supported
- Identify the exact model and codename. A phone’s retail name alone may not distinguish variants. Check the model information on the device and compare it with the official device entry.
- Look for that entry in the LineageOS device list. The Wiki cautions that devices not listed are unsupported. A third-party device browser updated October 12, 2026, showed SHIFTphone 8.1 as an example of a LineageOS 24.0 device, but that dynamic listing is not a complete official support list. Confirm any device on LineageOS’s own page.
- Read the matching installation guide before downloading or flashing. Check its required stock firmware, bootloader state and other prerequisites, then use the procedure specified there.
- Prepare for the guide’s computer connection. Installation instructions may involve connecting the phone to a computer over USB. The connector and cable requirements vary by device; a USB data cable cannot make an unsupported phone compatible.
Why Android 17 does not prove compatibility
Google’s Android 17 Generic System Image (GSI) releases are developer testing and validation images for supported Treble-compliant devices. Their existence does not mean that LineageOS 24 can be installed on every older phone, or that a phone able to use a GSI is supported by LineageOS. Google’s Android 17 GSI release notes describe a June 18, 2026 build with a June 2026 security patch level; that detail applies to Google’s GSI, not to LineageOS 24.
Phone age and Android version are not substitutes for an official device entry. The decisive checks are whether LineageOS lists the exact device and whether you can meet that device’s installation prerequisites.

What is reported about older kernels
Android Authority reported that devices using Linux kernel 4.4 or 4.9 are limited to LineageOS 22.2. The project’s official changelog was not available in the reporting used for this article, so treat that as a reported limitation rather than a confirmed rule for every device or as a complete statement of LineageOS 24 support policy. Check the official changelog and your device’s current page before drawing a conclusion about a specific phone.
Bottom line for an upgrade decision
LineageOS 24.0 is reported as an Android 17-based release, and browser-based tools add support for several flashing protocols. Neither fact guarantees an upgrade path for an older phone. Verify its exact official device listing, prerequisites and installation guide first; if it is not listed, the LineageOS Wiki considers it unsupported.
