LINE is a messaging and communication app for one-to-one and group chats, voice and video calls, stickers, emoji, and themes. Its core purpose is communication, although LINE also offers other services, and the app’s features and layout can vary by country, account, and version.

What is the LINE messaging system?

LINE is a digital communication service built around its Messenger app. LINE’s product page describes free messaging and voice calls, along with text chat, video calls, stickers, emoji, and themes. These tools let people communicate directly or in groups; the service also has features beyond private messaging.

LINE’s description of its service as usable across locations does not mean every feature is available everywhere. Availability and navigation can depend on the user’s region, account, and app version.

What can you do in LINE?

  • Send messages: Exchange text in one-to-one and group chats.
  • Make calls: Use voice and video calling features.
  • Personalize chats: Send stickers and emoji or use themes.

LINE’s Help Center also has support areas for groups, OpenChat, paid items, and other services. Those additions are distinct from the core definition: LINE is a communication app, while the broader service includes more than direct person-to-person messaging.

Does LINE use end-to-end encryption?

LINE calls its end-to-end encryption feature Letter Sealing. LINE’s Help Center says it is on by default and is designed to prevent people who are not members of a chat—including LINE—from seeing the contents of covered messages. It lists text, location information, photos, videos, voice messages, files, and one-to-one voice and video calls among the covered categories. Some media or files may not be encrypted depending on the app version and specifications.

Letter Sealing does not cover every kind of communication or content in LINE. The Help Center says it is not applied to group voice and video calls, meetings, albums, or notes. LINE also says its servers may process information to provide functions such as message ordering, read receipts, sticker purchase checks, and URL previews. For example, URL previews are generated on LINE’s servers; LINE says the preview feature can be turned off in settings. In short, Letter Sealing protects specified content in specified communication types, not all information processed by the service.

How does LINE describe use of chat information?

LINE’s published information-usage FAQ distinguishes chats between users from chats with Official Accounts. For user-to-user chats, the FAQ says format information, stickers, and emoji are used, while chat content such as text, photos, and videos is not used under the terms it describes. For conversations between users and Official Accounts, the FAQ says communication content and format information may be used, with stated exclusions for content from designated sensitive Official Accounts. It discusses call metadata and other feature-usage information separately. These are LINE’s descriptions in its FAQ; consult its current terms for the latest details.

Does LINE look the same in every country?

No. Regional availability and navigation can differ, and changes may roll out gradually. In a Help Center notice updated October 1, 2026, LINE described redesign changes for Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand. The notice says LINE VOOM ended on September 30, 2026, in Japan and Taiwan, and on September 28, 2026, in Thailand. It also describes region-specific tab changes: Japan added a Shopping tab, Taiwan added a Discover tab, and Thailand’s Voom tab was being replaced by OpenChat as the redesign rolled out. The notice says Stories and birthday cards are no longer available in the areas where LINE VOOM ended. These dates and changes apply to the named regions, not necessarily to every LINE user.
